Okay...so this is a bit of center, and perhaps not the solution you may be looking for. However what about philips hue bulbs. It's totally overkill, however it gets you around having to run an extra wire. http://www.meethue.com/en-US

You can get this or something similar to control your lights if they are the regular screw in lamp base type.
