Your better bet would be to go to /r/vacuumcleaners. That being said, their stock recommendation for a good starter vacuum in the $100 range seems to be the Hoover Tempo, currently almost exactly $100 on amazon (though a few days ago it was $84): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009ONZ8G/

If you go to /r/vacuumcleaners, be prepared to tell them if you have carpet, how thick, if you own pets or smoke, the area of your home, and if you prefer cyclone or bag and canister, handheld, or upright.

Your current machine will really struggle on carpet because it doesn't have a brush roll and is something like 2 amps total. If you want to stay cheap I would go with a tempo I also think the carpet pro cpu250 is a solid little machine but is nearly double the price of the Tempo.

I would buy the older version, it’s still available for purchase.

And that vacuum is probably the best within the $100 price range. Amazon reviews are notoriously bad in rating vacuums. Most people aren’t aware what actually makes a good machine.

If your budget goes higher but within $200, then the Hoover Windtunnel (bagged) is your best bet.

When I was shopping for a vacuum 2 years ago, I looked at Consumer Reports. Their highest rating for vacuum quality was the Kirby, the second highest was this $75 (then $59) vacuum. It's still working just fine. If it dies tomorrow and I have to buy 15 in 30 years, I'll have spent far less than $1,600. I don't expect it to die tomorrow.

Oh, and mine is a tenth of the weight (I've had a Kirby in my house, a door-to-door salesman got my roommate to buy one until I convinced him to get his money back).

Whats your opinion on this vaccum?

Hoover Tempo WidePath Bagged Upright Vacuum, U5140900

I am not an expert, but it seems to be the "civilian" version of what you find in every single office and hotel. I've had it for 5 years and it works wonderfully.

Just how much better would a $300 vacuum be? Sure, it may not be all shiny and space-age like the one you posted.. but for $80 I find it an amazing buy.

I have a Hoover Tempo. It's an ugly Mofo, but it's great at handling fur, poop, and hay. It's also survived quite a few stick fragments. I used to have a HEPA-filter bagless vac, but it clogged constantly.

I usually change the bag every 1-2 weeks depending on how bad the bunnies are. The bags for the Hoover are cheap online.

What do you think about an Oreck? I'm hesitating over this one since I've had this one for a while and its hard to push on the carpet.

Is this Hoover Tempo the vacuum you are recommending? Also, I read somewhere that bagged vacuums are better than bagless, is that still true today?

If I only had $100 to buy a brand new vacuum, which should I get? For 75% Carpet and 25% Wood Floor. These are all bagged uprights.

Hoover Windtunnel (UH30310, UH30600, UH30300 - they all seem very similar)

Hoover Tempo used to be $40 but now it looks like its $70 on amazon(http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Widepath-Upright-Vacuum-Bagged/dp/B0009ONZ8G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371826061&sr=8-1&keywords=hoover+tempo)
Is a standard upright bag vacuum. It has worked well for us. We vacuum like twice week due to our dogs and it gets the job done. Has good suction. Only complaint would be the cord is a little short.
