I have the G1WH. It's not fancy, but it records 1080p video on a loop to a MicroSD and it's only $50. I suggest the rear view mirror stem mount, the suction cup mount that comes with it is slightly shitty.

I have the G1WH, a rearview mount, and a 15 ft type A to mini-B USB cable. I mounted the camera on the rearview mount and ran the USB cable under the headliner and routed it towards the passenger side, down the A pillar behind the plastic cover, behind the kick panel, under the glove box between it and the plastic cover, behind the center console and tucked the cable between the center console and carpet until it got to the arm rest, where I snaked it into the storage compartment and plugged it in to an Anker dual port charger.

Yes I do! It's a G1W.

It's mounted in front of the rear view mirror, with the USB cable run down the A-pillar and hard-wired into the dash. I actually glued the mount to the rear view mirror, but you can also buy a special mount.

I really like it. Only $60 and it's Go-Pro quality footage with great nighttime performance. Only cons are no GPS and the "G-sensor" is too sensitive and clogs up the memory card with random clips. So it has to be turned off.

EDIT: Here's some raw footage I happened to have on my hard drive.

This is the one I have. The C means capacitor instead of battery since it gets too hot in Atlanta to have a device with a battery sitting on your dash all day and the B means the lens is black so it's less conspicuous.

I got This SD card. The camera supports up to 32gb. Don't buy SanDisk with this camera, they don't play well.

And I got this attachment which is way better than the suction cup option.

Lastly, make sure if you buy this camera it records in .mov files. There some cheap knock offs that record in .avi that aren't 1080p.

Hope this helps.

I bought one a couple months ago and I love it. I've actually recorded one accident at an intersection already (luckily not my own) and was able to offer the footage to those involved and the police if they needed it. After doing some research I heard a lot of good things about the G1W. There are knockoffs, but the one I got from "Black Box" on amazon appears to be legit. I got the "stealth" one as well for less glare from it. Here's the links to everything you need it you want to pick up a good one for a good price:

If you've got prime (which you should because it's fuckin awesome. Seriously get it or find a friend with it and get on theirs) then this whole setup almost exactly a hundred bucks and you're all set to go.

PS, great car, how long have you had her? Sorry to see the damage.

In my experience, the so-called night vision feature on all dash cams is questionable. I will say, whatever the headlights light up, you see very clearly. I can still read plate numbers at night of the car infront of me on the video. I can see street signs too. It isn't true IR night vision so don't expect that. But it is better quality that I expected or would expect even from a more expensive camera.

The only problem I have had with mine is after two years, the suction cut mount broke. So I ordered this for $8 and now it is attached to my rear view mirror and I never have to worry about it again. I would suggest getting it when you order the camera just so you don't have to worry about it.

Spy Tec G1WH. Capable of wide angle, and 1080p/30fps recording. The way it works is that it records in 5 minute blocks - once it runs out of room in the memory card, it overwrites the oldest block. The caveat is that it doesn't play well with Class 10 micro sd cards, so I use a 32GB Class 6. I believe I have an 8-10 hour window of current 1080p footage, which should be more than sufficient.

I also purchased a dashcam hard-wire kit, in conjunction with an add-a-fuse kit. It might sound daunting to a layman, but it was actually incredibly simple to wire up. With it, the dashcam turns on when I turn the car on (I wired it in to the car stereo), and turns off when I turn the car off. This was necessary for me because one alternative, using a power adapter plugged into the cigarette lighter, wouldn't work due to my cigarette lighter always being powered, even when the truck is turned off. Also, my install is clean as hell - the only things visible are the cam itself, and about four inches of power wire running up to the headliner.

Here are the specific items I purchased, on Amazon:

Dashcam, $53 Prime

Hardwire kit, $15 shipped

Add-A-Fuse, $11 Prime

Rearview mirror mount, $9 Prime

Class 6 32GB MicroSDHC + adapter if you don't already have one, $16 Prime

Running total for everything above, to your door, about $105. Install takes about ten-fifteen minutes by yourself. You can probably get a local shop to do it if you prefer, for a cost. Hell, I'd even lend a hand if you wanted, so long as you promise you aren't a total fucking weirdo.

Edit to answer your second question: Yeah, I like it. For $100, it's probably the best quality you'll find. With it installed, I often forget it's even there; it's tucked away behind my mirror. The peace of mind that it adds, should I ever need it myself, is great. Also, catching stuff like what's in the video is a huge bonus!

I'm not a fan of the suction cups. I had issues as well but ended up getting a mount similar to that hangs off the rear view mirror:

I don't know. There was a really popular post on reddit a few months back where they recommended the G1W, which ended up being what I got as well. While the unit itself is great so far, the suction cup (of all things) broke the very first day I got it, rendering it unuseable until I could get an adapter to hook it onto my rear view mirror. I got it all right now and it does take good video so there is that. I had one dash cam before this one which absolutely sucked and burned out after a few weeks of staying in my car in the HI sunlight. This one hasn't crapped out on me yet.

and the adapter:

I use this one You might need to sand a little off of the connector piece to make it fit. It is really solid and increases the "stealthiness".
