What app are you using for pink noise? I've been using SimplyNoise which does pink, white, and brown noise and I like it but sometimes it crashes on my tablet.
And I agree about pink noise + earphones blocking everything. I use these earbuds: http://smile.amazon.com/JVC-HAFR36B-Marshmallow-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B005FDOGK2
The marshmallow tips are nice because they're comfortable and also 'fill' your ears. So they're like a combination of earphones and earplugs. The sound quality isn't that great but if you're just using them for noise, they're okay. They even have a couple cheaper sets on amazon too.
I use these. Use it like the foam ear plugs and it works fine. They don't sound amazing, but for less than $15 I can't complain.
One of these days I'll spring for a pair of these pretties. Should be both noise canceling and noise isolating if the fit is right.
But if anyone wants a great cheap pair of noise isolating headphones, I love the JVC Marshmallow. The foam ear buds fit perfectly for me and do the best job of noise isolation than anything else I've tried.
I always recommend these, I've been using them for years. They're cheap, have great sound, and use some kind of memory foam so they're always comfortable in your ears. I've listened to lots of Floyd on these, and it always sounds great. Just be careful, because they release a new version yearly and according to the reviews for the latest model they've gotten a lot worse (the link is for an older generation model).

These are the best earbuds I've ever used when taking quality and price into consideration. I really encourage you to try them. Worst case, you aren't thrilled with them and you're out 10 bucks.
