Kingsglaive movie (To understand what happened in Insomnia just after you left. You will learn what happened very early in the game but it will be without any context how it happened)

Brotherhood anime (To learn the story behind the characters):

I would recommend watching the anime and movie before starting to play because it helps to understand better what happened. But you can also play without watching it.

There are no spoilers in the anime and only minor spoilers in the movie that will come out in the game anyway. If you want to go spoiler free. Very early in the story Ignis will deliver a newspaper with some news, thats the point where you could watch the movie.

Edit: If you want the perfect experience then:

  1. Watch the anime series
  2. Start the game
  3. Ignis delivers some newspapers with some news -> Watch the Kingsglaive movie
  4. Continue game

Definitely worth watching the prequels before playing. You won't be totally lost without them, but you'll appreciate the story more with them.

And yes, that is "prequels" plural. The first is Final Fantasy XV: Brotherhood, which you can watch legally for free on YouTube, Crunchyroll, Vrv, and so on. 5 short anime episodes that introduce you to the main characters and a couple major events that are referenced in the game.

The second is Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, a feature-length CGI film that parallels the game's story and shows events you don't get to witness personally in the game. It isn't free, but I felt I got my money's worth out of it. Fun movie with incredible visuals.

Honestly I think I may have enjoyed these more than the game itself, considering I played the vanilla version on base PS4 before all the updates and additions came out.
