I have a set of these and I had to get help from an electrician to figure out my situation. The main thing to understand is that these switches do not function like a traditional 3-way switch at all. From the manual:

"The auxiliary
switch does not actually control the power; instead, it sends
a momentary voltage signal through the traveler wire to the
primary switch which in turn, controls the power to the load."

So you definitely need to understand how the wires are connected between the boxes. My aux switch box didn't have a neutral so one had to be pulled from the lights.

Have you tried swapping the switch locations? Also, I thought I could get away with using LED bulbs but it didn't work until I installed incandescents. Finally, the Amazon reviews of these switches on were very helpful to me as people describe how they were able to get them to work.

Do you have a dimmer instead of a switch? The difference is important.

I use this for my florescent lights. It clicks when you turn on or off the light. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035YUOWC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use this for other dimmable lights. The light (and assume the power to the bulb) ramps up to full power.

Have you tried replacing the bulb? Is your garage cold? Cold effects these bulbs pretty drastically. When it's cold (<30°) mine only operate at about half the brightness for a few minutes.

I'd be hesitant to use that aeon microswitch on a 3way circuit. If the other switch is off then you wouldn't be able to control the microswitch since it'd have no power. You'd be better off getting actual z-wave 3 way switches IMO.

"companion" It is not HA slang. It has to do with the remote switch configurations. Sometimes they are referred to as traveler switches.

Essentially anytime you have more than one switch controlling a device the wiring is different than if there is just one switch. The remote or traveler is a parallel circuit to the main switch.

Below is a link to a baisc 3-way Z-Wave switch. The remote switches are not the same as the switch that directly controls the load.

> I will get the switches wired correctly and only install one z wave switch. As everyone has pointed out 2 would be overkill.

You need two switches still. Just one of them needs to be an add-on switcht. Or buy it as a kit.

It's probably cheaper to just buy them individually though:

No. That is just my personal usage.

There are other options. Probably a good choice GE Switches.
If you don't want added automation, I believe the GE Remote should be able to join and group the switches and then work as remote.

+1 for GE's z-wave switches if you have or are getting a z-wave compatible hub to run them. You need one "control" switch for each light circuit and one or more add-on switches for the other spots that control the same light. Here's a dimmer set and an on/off only set, which both contain one control switch and one add-on switch. These individual switches can also each be found separately online to purchase individually for your circuit that needs 3 switches, and sometimes they're cheaper individually but should work the same.
