A medium-sized compressor could potentially spray a fence using a low-volume, low-pressure gun. But even then, if you don't have ~5cfms coming out of that thing you're going to be stopping to let it recover and putting a lot of miles on your compressor.
I, personally, don't like spraying anything. Way higher learning curve and prep/cleanup time and higher material usage than people expect. Really only worth it in rare scenarios--and I've used both compressed air and airless sprayers.
Fastest moving fence staining I've found are the large brushes specifically built for decks and fences. This lets you move pretty quickly, but it isn't super messy and it's more frugal with material than a sprayer. It's also easier for an amateur to get a nice even coat than with a sprayer.
