This will not work on 2004 and 2005 Mazda 3s. On the 06+ units, there is a "Media" button which would accept that plug as an AUX, but the older ones have a "Tape/MD" button with no way to access it as an AUX device. That port on the older head units is for an external CD changer. You need a cable that plugs into the same port with a device attached to emulate the external CD changer. This is what I got for my car.
The cable emulates the external CD changer, and the head unit runs in CD mode. Press the CD button twice to access it. And the good news is, it will let you use both the in-dash CD player and the external plug.

I purchased an adapter that plugs into the CD player expansion port on the back of my factory 2004 Miata unit, it worked great for $20. There was some electrical noise but a ground loop noise isolator fixed it. Then I purchased a $20 Bluetooth module that plugged into the aux port and was powered by the USB cable on the adapter. I had crystal clear aptX bluetooth on a stock 2004 miata radio.
I have since upgraded to a touch screen Kenwood unit so the adapter is just sitting in a drawer. If you want it I could ship it to you for free, I'm feeling generous this Christmas :)
