Good idea! Their are lots of comparable office machines to be found locally around the world. These are the most compatible graphics cards for this type of upgrade.

These two cards even fit in low-profile "slim" machines. This expands the range of PCs that you can buy. Be sure the computer you buy has the PCIe 16x slot, as some board makers save a few dollars by not including it on all boards.

You will also want to add a SSD and reinstall the OS, browser, and small programs. The 128 GB size is a bit slower then the 256 GB size, so it is often better to get that size ($55 vs $85).

Hey fellow surplus-PC buyer!

I have two surplus Dell PCs with a similar case size, and I found that they could fit low-profile GTX 1050 Ti cards. I didn't even have to replace the mobo or PSU, because the cards don't require external power.

Even if it turns out that you DO need a new PSU, Mobo and case, the 1050 TI is still a solid card, so you wouldn't be out any money if you try the low-profile card and it doesn't work out.

Be sure you check to make sure it fits in your case wothout hitting the heatsink. I had to modify the first PC I had it in (HP 6300, I think)

Not sure about a comparable AMD GPU. But the 1050 ti was the best GPU I could find at the time that would pull all it's power from the PCIe slot and doesn't require a PSU power plug in.

In my experience, good sff PSUs that work inside pre built Dells are next to none. I think your best option might be to sacrifice the 1060 for a 1050ti low profile like this: Amazon Link That 1050ti lp doesn't require any external connectors and draws all it's power from the lane, so you'll be more than fine on power. Combine this with a good 1600x900 monitor and you'll forseeably get 60fps on most games on medium-ish to high depending on the title.

What games are you looking to play, if I may ask? I can give you some performance figures from my own computer (which is similar) to give you a ballpark estimate.

Only the tower can take regular size video card. In addition to power, it can't be too long to block the USB and SATA ports on the motherboard.

Also check if the monitor is compatible - 1050ti cannot output VGA.

E: Ugh, had to take a phone call, delayed this post, then saw that the other guys found out that even LP GPUs wouldn't work.

Actually pretty doable, people do it pretty frequently - what you need is a low-profile graphics card that only uses PCIe power, as the PSUs that the optiplex comes with don't support external power connections. So, you're probably going to be looking for a 1050Ti (or a 1650, but it's harder to find low-profile versions) specifically a model that doesn't need external power, like this one. Add that in, and you're good to go.

It won't be amazing, but it should suffice for playing most modern titles - if you turn down settings, you should be able to squeeze out 60fps. - this is actually a common build for basic VR setups for people who want to play simple games like Beat Saber as well.


Also, this is all predicated on you having the more common SFF Optiplex, which are the flat and narrow versions - if you have a mini-tower Optiplex, your options open up quite a bit, as you can replace the power supply to accommodate something like an RX570, which is cheaper but much stronger than a 1050Ti.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. A steal in fact.

The limiting factor for dual slot, low profile in these SFF systems is just the availability of PCI-E slots. The newest Optiplex SFF's can't take these because their one PCI-E x16 slot is too close to the power supply. Looking at ThinkCentres right now, I think you'll be fine.

The 1050TI low profile, such as one here, is about the best low profile video card on the market today. Note that I got mine for $150 mid-2017, before the whole bitcoin mining fiasco. I'd recommend waiting for the price to come back down again. $150 is a pretty damn good value for this kind of piece.

Not sure the dimensions of the computer but there are LP 1050ti that could fit.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information but there are plenty of 1050Ti's in stock, they were never part of the mining boom. Did a quick search and for $299.98 shipped you do do exactly what I said.

Using this image as reference, the first two cases will require a half width GPU. Any low profile GPU will work (the best LP GPU is the MSI GTX 1050Ti. As for the last case, you can fit any width GPU.

The issue is the best CPU the Dell Optiplex 390 comes with is an i5-2400 and 4GB of RAM. DDR3 is not really worth sinking money into unless you can get it for free.

I'm watching a youtube video of someone who built a build with this case. He looks to be able to fit a 1050ti in with some modifications to the case and removing some plastic.

Yes, these are great systems to start with, however you are limited to small gpus. A low profile 1050ti would set you back about $150. Meaning your total cost would be around $340. My brother has a pc setup similar to this. You sure this one won't work? This is what I have in my optiplex 790 and it works like a charm. Even if the slot is slightly closer to the PSU I would expect it to be fine as most of the hardware sits above the card, away from the PSU and it's quite flat on the bottom.

It should fit and it's not a bad card for gaming. Any sort of "Low Profile" card will fit.

Question now is will your power supply handle it? Also what kind of processor did it come with? I believe the I5 was standard, but I know that there were other weaker ones and also how much RAM does it have? If you have 8GB of RAM and the i5 you might be good to go. BUy the GPU off of Amazon so you can return if it you can't get it working.

My PC, GPU, and Monitor all add up to about $500, and I just use an old keyboard and mouse I found at a garage sale. That would work, it'd be easier to just return it and buy a low profile version instead.

It would help to know what exactly your current setup is.

Given you don't have an HDMI out currently, I'm assuming you don't have a dGPU at all? actually read your post. What chipset do you have, and what's your [current] budget?

You can, of course, order a USB 3.0 to HDMI solution, but they aren't really reasonably priced if you plan on upgrading other parts in the future anyways.

It may make sense to just outright replace your MoBo with one that has an HDMI out if you don't ever want to have a DGPU - especially if you don't plan on updating chipsets since older chipset MoBos will be hard to find as time goes on.

If you DO plan on getting a dgpu at some point, a low profile 1050Ti may be a good solution without limiting your case options later on. Realistically, though, if this is just for displaying media the 1050ti is likely way more than you need - and you could get a cheaper 1030, I just dont' recommend the 1030 since it's a terrible performance/dollar. At $150 for the 1050ti though, outright replacing the MoBo may be your most reasonable solution.

What is the intended goal of up upgrade? Are you looking for the best gaming performance, or are you just looking for other graphical outputs (that aren't the VGA and 2 DisplayPort connections that are standard) for as cheap as possible?

For gaming, you probably are going to be picking between the low profile GTX 750 Ti models from Gigabyte or MSI or the low profile GTX 1050 Ti from MSI (they also have a GTX 1050, but I'm not sure where it can be bought). There are upcoming GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti models coming from Gigabyte, but I'm not sure when it will be available.

You could go with the GT 1030 if you'd like, the only downside I can really see is that there isn't much in the way of upgrading the CPU so do what feels right.
