Interesting challenge! Of course, EDC depends on your personal needs and I'm going to assume you're in the US since you're making the challenge in Dollars. Unless informed otherwise I'm going to assume I don't need to buy a watch.

If you want to explore a little bit, I recommend stopping by us in /r/flashlight.

If you don't feel like going down the rabbit hole of spending thousands of dollars on lights and having to go to the rehab because of it, here are a few tips:

1) Fucking Nitecore Tube. The best everyday carry light you can ask for. Probably brighter than your multi-LED light (Always go for single LED, unless you buy a light for like $400).

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/NiteCore-Keychain-Light-Pocket-Flashlight/dp/B00OZJ79R4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735093&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+tube

2) Olight S1/S1R/S mini. These are the smallest flashlights that use a CR123 or RCR123 batteries. Now you are entering the world of big boy lights. The batteries are lithium based, the max output is around 500 lumes, and you can get them in various materials, like titanium, copper or stainless steel.

Video for the S1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KW_76H7NRk

Amazon for the S1: https://www.amazon.com/Olight-Baton-Lumen-Compact-Flashlight/dp/B013JEJBNK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735419&sr=8-3&keywords=olight+s1

PS: The S mini is more powerful and smaller than the S1, but also more expensive. The S1R can be charged by a USB cable.

3) ARMYTEK WIZARD PRO. Many consider this light as one of the best for normal use. It uses 18650 class batteries which are the most popular among quality flashlights (The same as the ecig vaporizers use). A cheaper variant would be Olight H1 nova, a more expensive variant would be a ZebraLight H600F MKII.

4) CHARGER! If you want to use any of these light just for everyday/hiking/emergency use (Not hobby). You will need just one charger. Either a Nitecore F1 if you don't want to charge your standard NiMh batteries. Or Nitecore i2, which charges almost anything, lol.

Nitecore F1: https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Nitecore-Battery-Charger-Compatible/dp/B01FM9UQDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735901&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+F1

Nitecore i2: https://www.amazon.com/NiteCore-i2-V2014-Universal-Intelligent-Batteries-Compatible/dp/B009JMDD9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735922&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+i2

5) Batteries. There are lots of manufacturers, but if you stick to the big ones like panasonic or sanyo, you are OK. Also brands that make lights like Nitecore, Olight, etc. are always a safe bet.

Happy light hunting!

First off, forget the colored light. A 1 lumen white light does just as good of a job. A Nitecore TIP fits that criteria. You can start off in low (1 lumen) by holding down the power switch for 1 second. A 1 lumen mode on a light this floody will be plenty for getting up in the middle of the night, but will be dim enough that your eyes will have to be adjusted to the dark.
If you want to spend even less, the Nitecore TUBE also has a 1 lumen mode.
Lights with integrated charging are always more expensive than lights without, so the $30 limit narrows your options.

I like these rechargeable keychain flashlights. I own a few and they are well made.

That's a fine recommendation. I don't agree - but it's valuable for OP to see different approaches from different redditors.

My whole point is to not spend the extra money on accessories like this.

I'm a big fan of 'buy once, cry once' - but for some people it's valuable to go low budget at first. Especially with accessories like this. As I gained experience - I learned that cheaper/smaller knifes were better for me. So, for example, the 'better' knives I invested in previously now sit in a drawer unused.

Choosing which gear to buy high quality first is complicated. Different ways to approach for sure. I'm recommending to focus on the 'big 4' first, not the accessories.

For example - I carry these as my knife and flashlight often:

handy because it is tiny and bright.. usually clipped inside my radio holder just as a backup.

Kinda late to the party, but I think a lot of people don't really realize how useful a designated flashlight is. I used to be one of those "my smartphone has a flashlight, that's all I need" people. But once I started carrying an actual flashlight I realized how clunky and bad smartphone flashlights are. They take forever to deploy, drain your battery really quickly, get really hot really fast, don't have any throw and I've heard that it's bad for the LED to be on for extended lengths of time.

When the Nitecore Tube exists, it's hard to justify not having one on you, as far as I'm concerned.

u/PacNiKK · 2 pointsr/flashlight

Have a look at the Nitecore TIP and TUBE, I've had both of them and still carry a TIP on my keychain every day.

I was going to recommend something small like the Streamlight Stylus Pro or the Microstream coupled with rechargeable AAA batteries. Or maybe the Terralux or the Thrunite Ti4. You can keep a few spare batteries in your bag, and will be good to go for a long while....but..../u/bob60626 linked to a really good deal on those olight s20r lights...so now I'm going to suggest that. It seems though that they only do Paypal or Check payments though, so that might be a deal breaker.

I'd also suggest something like the Nitecore Tube, which can be recharged via a standard USB micro connection (your current phone charger if you have an android).

I have a Nitecore Tube on my keychain and I love it. It does pretty much anything I need, it's cheap, bright, adjustable and rechargeable. I can't vouch for toughness, but I keep it in the same pocket as my Skeletool CX and it has nary a scratch on it. I would recommend it unless you really need something to vanquish the dark in a 30ft cone.

I see that you're planning to use a USB power pack + the Black Diamond Revolt. I must say that I tried this out and was highly disappointed by the brightness of the headlamp with rechargeable batteries. It was only semi-bright at full charge, and then you can see them dimming down to nothing within just a few hours.

I ultimately opted for a mini usb clip light (these can get up to 45 lumens and is rechargeable!), which was much more reliable than the revolt IMHO. And then I brought this as a backup light, which clips right into your power pack and weighs (I hate this phrase but in this case it's true), next to nothing.

Also I personally feel that with all the options available for lightweight USB based lights, there's no need for the tent with the built-in lights. It would save money and flexibility to get a normal tent and then bring your own little USB strip like this.
