Chest strap heart rate monitors are highly accurate. Wrist monitors aren't as accurate and can be pretty hit or miss. The Wahoo TICKR and Polar H7 are both accurate and relatively affordable at $50. Don't know of any good devices that are cheaper than that.

Garmin has a piece of software called BaseCamp that you can use to analyze/graph the data collected by the 800.

A much cheaper option is to buy a bluetooth heart rate monitor like this one and pair it with your iPhone, then use an app like Strava to record your ride data and heart rate. I highly recommend checking out Strava even if you don't go for the heart rate monitor - its a great free app that will give you most of the data you're looking for.

I use HRV myself, mostly as a sanity check to make sure I'm not overtraining and to track how workouts affect my smpathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system. I've heard good things about BioForce, but I it's pretty damn pricey and I already had a HR monitor. There are a handful of free apps that will do basically the same thing as BioForce without the added price, but may not be as in depth with the details of what is tracked. Check out Elite HRV, probably my favorite of the apps that I've tried. It's totally free, all you need for these apps is a bluetooth heart rate strap (can pick up a Polar one on Amazon for $50 - http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Sensor-BLE-BLK-M-XXL/dp/B007S088F4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459272728&sr=8-1&keywords=bluetooth+heart+rate+strap)

I use the Polar Bluetooth Smart Heart Sensor, which connects to my iPhone w/ an app instead of the traditional HRM that is used with a watch. I only do indoor gym classes so it works perfectly for me. I didn't like having to wear a watch (used to have one too and it was mostly unused).

I have this bluetooth one from Polar. I found it useful because I'm trying to stay at maintenance calories and sometimes that's hard if I don't have a good gauge of how hard my workout is. This helps me remember that an hour long bench press workout seems to burn about 1/4 the calories of an hour squat workout, whereas tracking both in an app like My Fitness Pal might give them the same calorie burn for being one hour of weight training. Keep in mind that the calorie burns on these aren't necessarily perfectly accurate. This goes back to the frequent discussion about finding your TDEE through trial and error. For myself, I find that I stay at current weight using 50% of the calories the heart rate monitor reports. Meaning if it says I burned 700 calories in a workout, I'll only eat back 350 to maintain.

I use the polar h7. Its bluetooth, and had a phone app, so i leave my phone in front of me (below the tv) and then can see my heart rate easily in real time.

I think the unfortunate reality is that the act of lifting heavy things requires a large increase in blood pressure (which is why lifting weights can lead to stroke / heart attack by dislodging pre-existing blood clots). It seems like your heart defects prevent your heart from creating and supporting that increase in blood pressure which leads to you feeling faint as blood is deprived from brain.

To maintain awareness of your heart rate during exercise, I think you should look into getting a heart rate monitor:

  • In watch form

  • Or one that you can wear around your chest

    Do some more research to find the best monitor for you depending on cost, comfort, accuracy, and durability.

    Regarding weight lifting:

  • Large compound exercises (e.g. squat, deadlift) put a much greater strain on your heart and vascular system by requiring entire muscle groups to work instead of isolated muscles.

  • Consider a program that focuses on muscle isolation - smaller movements with free weights or machines that target specific muscles. Its not ideal, but it will reduce the load on your heart and blood pressure demands. I would speak to your doctor and a physical therapist about this.

    Regarding cardio-vascular training:

  • As long as you train with that heart monitor and keep your heart rate under that 150 bpm ceiling, you should be able to perform almost any form of cardio exercise you wish.

  • Endurance athletes often train by heart rate intensity alone and often in the heart rate zone that you're forced to stay in.

  • Be VERY careful about interval training. Learn to train by heart rate rather than intensity/speed/distance. That Heart Rate Monitor will be your best friend.

  • Finally, START SLOW AND EASY. This advice is given to anyone starting endurance cardio - your body needs time to adapt to long periods of activity, always err on the side of caution.

I'd suggest finding out what kind of monitor is compatible with and go with that.

I got this one.
It's very no-frills. I don't always use the watch/display part, but I just wear the chest band and then look at the readout on the treadmill at the gym.

If I was going to buy one now that I have a smartphone that would work with it, I'd get this one that's just the chest band.

I got a Gshock with as atomic time setting and solar, so it was like $87 with tax. HRM is $50. Arm straps you'll have to search based on your phone, but they're not much.

i've been wanting to try one out, too, and the Polar H7 comes up as a sort of new thing-- in that it is bluetooth and talks to an app on your phone (iphone and maybe android too? not sure). So you don't have to have a watch, which is a pro and a con. I always jog with my phone nearby, and when I lift weights it might be off to the side but it would still be receiving data I can look at when I'm done.

I think anyways! If anyone has experience with the Polar H7 speak up! I'm looking for a simple HRM though, not a full foot-pod-watch-strap thing that i know some crazy serious runners and things use.

Polar chest strap tracks pretty well. I have this one and I was happy with it. It connects through bluetooth to your phone/iPod so you don't have to wear any type of watch.

I switched to the Fit bit because it tracks all day and I like the interface much better. But if you're strictly looking to track HR during workouts and not track movement/food during the day, I say go with a chest strap.

Yes. 1200 is the bare minimum anyone should eat. Yup! You buy it and When you unpack it all you have to do is moisten the plastic bit of the strap and put it on. It's that simple.

Of course you have to pair the strap to your phone, and once you do that your workout apps will read it. I use Endomondo, but I believe most mainstream apps will import the heart rate data in real time, so you don't have to download an extra app or anything

I had the same issue - I kickbox and felt like my Apple Watch couldn’t keep track of my heart rate. I’ve been very happy with my Polar chest strap and feel like it’s more or less accurate.

Not the exact model but something similar.

When i'm at the gym i use the built in heart monitors on the cardio machines. No matter what I use to measure my heart rate it seems to fluctuate between 175-180 so i don't think faulty measuring equipment is at fault.

Before we go about missing the point (and edit our comments), here and here. I recommend the first one since it has more versatility for apps and gives you the option for ANT+ if you ever need it. ANT+ is nice to have additionally just because some things require it and buying a second HRM just because you didn't buy one that was bluetooth and ANT+ to begin with is frustrating.

Any model without a chest strap isn't going to be very accurate. The Polar Bluetooth seems to fit what I need it to be and its fairly cheap and has great reviews. Hope any of this helped!

I use polar beat app with my H7 HR monitor. The mileage is not 100% accurate, but it keeps track of time, distance, avg HR, max HR, calories burned, has challenges, etc. not a social platform though.
