I would suggest a spray paint designed for use on fabric and vinyl, a few companies make them, Rust-Oleum| offers a silver.
I have used it to turn white boots red, and I didn't have any flakes or chips from everyday wear (I don't have any photos or I would share). So I suggest a spray over any paint. If you have have a question in the future about any surfaces you have to paint, first check and see if there is a specific paint that suits your application.
