Here are some disconnected wireless headphones that already exist for you then.

Syllable Noise-Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds

Samsung Gear IconX

Bragi Truly Wireless Earbuds

This is just a single ear bluetooth headset, but it costs $16.99, that's almost 1 tenth of the price of the EarPods, and still has a much better design (imo) than the EarPods.

Firegram Mini Wireless Earbuds

Edit: Man, this is easy!

Here's a budget pair that probably lacks in many ways (battery life and no storage container) but are 30 dollars. You could buy 5 of these and still would have spent less than an EarPod.

Here is another one for $60 that looks very good as well.

I'm done, but you can look at the similar items on amazon for a bunch more truly wireless headphones that are still good and don't look like shit sticking out of your ear.

EDIT AGAIN: Shoutout to /u/VekinKG for this handy guide.

I hold my phone using a spyder grip, it's a diffrent approach and a more form fitting feel when running : https://www.spydergrip.com/

I use truly wireless blue tooth headphones : https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Cordfree-Fitness-Activity-Warranty/dp/B01F8FWSGA . they have other ones from different brands i like the way its truly wireless. i can focus more on running than feeling the earbuds

They come with different earbud sizes and the quality is great. Some versions have 4g drive so you dont need your phone with you. I've never had issues with them losing connectivity and they even have a heart rate monitor in them. Their case acts as a charger and they live for a few days. I'm pretty sure theyre compatible with Iphones.

I agree that assisting in pushing the tech along is better than just forcing the demand and waiting for the marked to step up and meet that demand.

I'm actually excited about the AirPods. $159 seems expensive, but the market for truly wireless headphones is pretty small right now and bigger name brands are $250-$300. the cheapest truly wireless set i found on amazon was $69 i think, and they looked awful and were presumably worse quality than the AirPods will be. I would argue that the AirPods are an innovative bluetooth headset at a competitive price. you can get a high quality wired bluetooth headset for much less, and that will probably be what most people do. but i think the AirPods were the real innovation (or at least push forward) this year. obviously we'll have to wait for them to be released, but $159 is pretty good for truly wireless and doesnt feel like a price gouge to me.

Are you going to be upgrading to the 7/7+ or is the 3.5 jack a deal breaker for you?

This is actually a good rate for 100% wireless headphones that last as long as they do. Samsungs are $200 and only last 1 hour.

If you get wireless headphones that have a connection between the two ear pieces obviously you'll save some money.
