I used these mitts myself: https://www.amazon.com/ScootR-Logic-SLHM-1-Hand-Mitts/dp/B0022ZJJSK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474574725&sr=8-1&keywords=scooter+mitts

And as long as you're wearing even basic leather gloves under them, they'll change your life. I tried super heavy snowmobile gloves before and they'd eventually succumb to the constant cold wind, but with another layer like this I was able to ditch those completely.

I also echo the Balaclava sentiment for neck and lower face protection.

I totally agree. The fender clearance was really tight on the frame, so the shop that helped me had to keep clearances tight over the tire. It was also spaced for a 28c tire and these are 30c w/ studs.

The fender supports are cut now... so I may just leave it this winter. Chicago has well plowed arteries... mostly so I am dealing with salty slush (and ice) more than snowpack.

The poagies are these. They cover the handlebars, block the wind, and provide additional insulation. The same idea as Barmitts but much cheaper.

You probably can ride for 8-9 months out of the year. 2nd half of Dec through 1st half of March will be pushing it. That said, its probably not the main roads you'll have to worry about. I-93, I-95 and Rt.3 are all cleared off quickly and thoroughly in my experience. Your local town roads may be much worse however.

A few things will be necessary once temps drop below freezing:

  • Heated gear. A FirstGear heat-troller, glove and jacket liner will set you back more around $300. Add heated pants and socks for another couple hundred.
  • A warm jacket and over pants. I wear a Alpinestars Messenger jacket and its pretty warm.
  • Balaclava for under your helmet
  • Pinlock or other anti-fog insert for your helmet.

Without the heated gear, I've ridden through most of Nov but it got cold. This year I'm going to give these a try as its my hands that are the biggest problem. Also I've seen scooters in downtown Boston year round and they unlikely to be using heated gear.
