Some of the less intuitive acccessories I've found helpful:

A decent can opener. Darn thing will last forever, and you will use it thousands of times. Every time it will do its simple job comfortably in your hands.

Good pair of scissors. Keep in your kitchen drawer. I use them for everything. Faster and easier than a knife for some little jobs. Fantastic for opening clamshell packaging.

Multi-bit screwdriver. Also for kitchen drawer. Sometimes you need a screwdriver and it's nice not to have to get out your toolbox for some little chore. You have four sizes in this one little tool.

Plain old 2D Maglite. Also for the kitchen. Great to have nearby when the power fails, or looking under things, taking the trash out at night. All kinds of stuff. A true BIFL item. I bought one in 1998 and it still looks new.

I have a traveling data center "Oh SHIT!" bag.

I have in it:

  • Jewelers screw driver set

  • HP Allen key

  • Philips and Flathead screw driver set

  • Multimeter

  • Ethernet ends, crimping tool

  • Various length patch cables

  • Cisco/Brocade console cables

  • USB to Serial adapter

  • 2x 8GB USB thumb drives

  • 750GB USB External HDD

  • Acronis boot CD

I used to store all of that in my DR data center until I had to fill up the entire rack. Now I keep it all a messenger bag in the trunk of my car. Unfortunately, I have had to use it on a few occasions. I'm glad I'm prepared because finding shit at 3AM for a data center issue and packing it up is super sleepy error prone.

Get a lock for your door!!!! Squeakiness check the bed and do some BDing! In the event of a squeaky bed throw a couple blankets on the floor.
A polite guest should not come knocking in the middle of the night. For added effect hang a “Do not disturb” sign on your door.

No idea about the helmet. As far as tools go

Works great for double checking the utilities are off or isolating a particular circuit if you don't want to leave someone's house entirely without power

For a while I had vice grips instead of these but found with gloves on they were a little too clunky to manipulate. Works great for grabbing and loosening like gas connections to dryers

Works as your battery cutter, prying tool, gas shutoff and a spanner. I cut one of those little locks that secures piv valves and commercial sprinkler systems with this thing before my partner could make it back with bolt cutters so that alone was worth half the price

add-ons are pesky

Thanks for the contest!

The entire project can be done with these tools:

I agree with what was said here, the 6-in-1 gets you most of what you need.

Here are my two reccomends:
Stanley version. I have personally used. bits are quite durable. handle is solid and can take some abuse. Good cheap tool.

The Klein version has a better grip than the stanley or the lennox. Otherwise more or less the same tool.

I like how the interchangeable "blade" on that screwdriver is just the tube part.

I also prefer something like this, because if those extra bits can't be stored inside the screwdriver itself at all times there's a 100% chance that they'll be lost.

This is my favorite screwdriver: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-68-012-All-in-One-Screwdriver/dp/B00009V431/ref=sr_1_11?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1427376111&sr=1-11&keywords=stanley+screwdrivers

Not a bunch of tips to loose. My favorite part is that you also get 2 nut drivers out of it.

If anyone is looking for a quality 6-in-1 screw driver checkout:

I have owned this screwdriver for about 5 years and it has proved it's worth time and time again. The bits all still snap in just as securely as the first day, the tips are still just as hard, it has been dropped hundred of times, it has been run over, it has had another screwdriver jammed in it's hole for more leverage, and it has seen the bad side of a pair of vice grips.

I give this my full endorsement as both a at home DIYer and as a driveway mechanic. I expect it will last longer than the cars it works on.
