In high school I was restoring a '74 Roadrunner. The hood never sat right, and I had used up all the adjustment there was and it still didn't quite sit right. The hood was also missing a latch, but that was no problem - I just installed some hood pins. I liked the way they looked, anyways.
Well the first night I get the engine running I'm super excited! Time to take it for a quick spin. Problem though, it's dark, it has no headlights, and I can't find the cotter pins for the hood. No problem - I slide some nails through the pins and grab my big spotlight and take off! I lived on a long dirt road in the woods that saw basically no traffic at night, so no big deal, right? I'm holding the spotlight out of the drivers window, steering with one hand and trying to see down this pitch black road and the hood flies up. See, nails don't have any sort of locking mechanism to hold them in place, and once the car started bouncing down the road the nails slid right out.
So now I'm doing 55 down a dark dirt road at night, hood blocking my vision, trying to crane my head out the window while aiming a spotlight and steering with 1 hand. I hit the brakes too hard and swerve next to the trees and get a face full of branches. I was able to stop the car, drive it back home, and park it. My parents got home and started asking about my scratched up face so I fessed up and they got a good laugh at my expense.
The icing on the cake though - something about how that hood flung up bent the hinges and finally aligned the hood. I guess it was worth it.

Said this about a month ago, and it's still true. There's a few 'Stanley FatMax Rechargeable Flashlights,' (this is the one I'm referring to) (I've also seen a black-and-white Black&Decker version) so let's make sure we're talking about the same one. The others aren't waterproof, so they're not even worth considering (to me). $35 makes me think you mean the 10W version (the 5W I'm talking about LISTS for $35, but is 'on sale' most of the time for $17.88 both on Amazon and Wal-Mart).

To sum up: which FatMax are you looking at? Do you need it TODAY? Do you need it to work reliably, or is it ok if you get a few uses out of it and it dies?
I don't hate them (I have two... one lives in the car, one with the canoe), but I think the use-cases where they're the best choice are fairly limited.
