In Austin, the law is that you can't have it in your hand. If someone is using it for GPS, they should have this 5-dollar silicone holder. If you are looking up and down rather than keeping your eyes on the road, you're going to kill a cyclist.

I know some people love solid mounts and all, but I find that the slots that keep it vertical fit very well and keep it snug. Then again not everyone's car has a nice flat area, so it may not be for everyone.
I am also looking for a generic desk dock, and I have been eyeing these cheap ones on ebay:
