It's a wireless doorbell. The base unit would be plugged into an outlet somewhere. Not really a "smart" doorbell. They probably took the rest of the doorbell with them not thinking about it or it got thrown away.

You could probably look into something like this.

Would be way easier than DIY something. But definetly pick up some esp8266/esp32 and have a lot fun with them anyways. :D
