I have that mouse, or at least something simmilar. Actually not that bad.
I don't think your budget is that unreasonable, but there are always additional costs that people forget to tell you about. Your son has a laptop, so presumably he doesn't have a keyboard, mouse, and spare screen. If you bought a new computer, even a pre-built one, it's likely that you'd still have to buy all of those separately.
So:
Amazon and newegg are great sources for all three of these. I'm prepared to make recommendations if you want, but that's what you should think "budget" wise, give or take.
So you still have plenty of money for a great computer - now putting together a new computer can be fun, but sometimes that's just overwhelming and it's not for everyone.
This one has a large hard drive for storage and smaller Solid State Drive for programs. Since Hard Drives tend to be the biggest slow down in any computer, getting a Solid State is mandatory in my opinion.
This is another one, also with a gtx 970. It costs more, but the CPU is also much faster. There's no Solid State Drive, which means that's something you ought to buy and install.
That's a SSD to get you started on a search. Samsung is expensive, don't buy a Lacie.
That's a fun and fancy looking gaming mouse for less than $25. It's incredibly customizable within the computer. I've bought tons of gaming mice in my day, and in the end it turned out that this cheap little mouse turned out to be the most fun.
Nope, Ive been looking at the Rat 7 myself. I have also been looking at this one, but its cheap so Im not sure how good it could be. https://www.amazon.com/YCCTEAM-Professional-Mechanical-Programming-Upgraded/dp/B00SB5NLZW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1480774213&sr=8-11&keywords=gaming+mouse
Try to get a with dpi settings. I have one that can change it with a button in the middle. Sad part is they are mostly have "gamer" lights. I tend to switch the dpi to what game I'm playing, and even with what character in Overwatch I get stuck with. The [one I have] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SB5NLZW/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498260618&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mechanical+mouse&dpPl=1&dpID=51vc3q4CE8L&ref=plSrch) is relatively cheap compared to the Logitech ones most people love.
I just got THIS one and I am loving it!

YCCTeam. It looks more like a mousetrap than an actual mouse itself.
I've had this Logitech G9x since 2010 and it's starting to show it's age. Recently rebent the springs under the left and right clicks to get rid of the double tapping, but now the back and forward buttons are starting to go and the wheel is less than accurate. Dealing with parts that small was a frustrating experience, but it's still serviceable so I'd like to put this mouse in storage "just in case". Or try to tune it up, then store it anyway. Regardless:
I'm not brand loyal, but I was very unimpressed by Logitech and Corsair's headsets. From what I've seen from searching around, the Logitech G502 looks really good, and /r/pcmasterrace, at least a year ago, seemed impressed by it. I almost impulse bought the Corsair M65 but I really don't like that big red button where I'd rest my thumb.
Anyway I'm rambling, I'm going to continue my search tomorrow but maybe you guys can give me somewhere to start. Hopefully this is enough info, thanks!
How about this one https://www.amazon.com/YCCTEAM-Buttons-Professional-Ergonomic-Aluminium-Pc/dp/B00SB5NLZW/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1469069590&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=yccteam highly praised and being sold by well known Amazon yccteam seller
This "advanced mouse" is literally just this mousel right down to the braided cable, except with a different shell.
Edit: What's with the downvotes? I own the mouse, all the buttons are in the same spot, and all the leds are in the same location.
