I would think you need to have an effect pedal with two input and output paths to be able to pass through it twice, right? For example I have a Berhinger fx600 that features this. You could run the first pass through in/out A and route the effected signal back through in/out B for a second pass, I would imagine.

There are also feedback loopers, but that may be a bit extreme if I understand your intentions correctly.
