Are they gnats or fruit flies? The vinegar think worked well for me with fruit flies. When you say "jar with a lid" what do you mean exactly?
What we used was basically a cruet (like this one, but not this one: http://www.amazon.com/Glass-Vinegar-Dispenser-Cruet-bottles/dp/B002PXB4SC/ref=sr_1_6?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1372700111&sr=1-6) without the stopper on. The flies would crawl down the tube, and get trapped.
Also, relatedly, if you have a red wine vinegar cruet, and don't have a stopper on it, check for flies before you use it!
