Can't resist adding a few book suggestions - he's a bit young but I think you two would enjoy looking through something like David MacAulay's Way Things Work. A book of science questions and answers might be fun too, like How Come? or National Geographic's Why?; there's an equivalent for younger kids too but sounds like you guys might prefer the big kids version. Mistakes that Worked is another great book.

Hi, We bought this glass waveline tile for our kitchen backsplash. We will have white cabinets. The tile will go up to the top of the cabinets. The home is contemporary. The ceiling is pretty tall, over 10 feet, the hood will be 36 inches.

We are thinking either a hood with curved clear glass like this:
cuved

or a trapezoid hood like this :
trapezoid

Which one do you think would look the best?

u/machinehead933 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

This cooktop is the most powerful one you can get that you can plug into a standard 120v / 15-20A circuit that you'll find in US homes. By all accounts, it would be difficult to brew a full 5G batch with this cooktop, but it would be fine for mashing. You can probably do full 2.5G batches without issue, however.

There are more powerful induction cooktops, but once you get past the 1800W mark you will likely need a 220v circuit. If you have one available to you, there are more powerful induction cooktops that you could probably do full 5G batches with, but they start getting pretty pricey.

What's your budget?

I used to have a glass kettle, but I kept catching my hands on the glass and in the end switched to this kettle. You can choose a temp between 50, 60, 70, 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100 degrees. I've had it for two years and the handle is nice and sturdy. It's definitely the best kettle I've had so far.

u/hotani · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

redid our kitchen with brewing in mind (yay pot filler!). Installed this hood which works pretty well but won't get rid of ALL the steam coming off the boil. I do 30 min boils which helps.

It's just barely high enough that I can transfer a large bag of grains (10G of a small beer, or 5G of a Big Imperial Stout or something). If I could do it over I'd install a few inches higher.

This is the hood on amazon. Looks like it maxes out at 400 CFM or so, but it has 3 settings and I rarely use high. And it is venting outside.

Yup; I'm from the UK and bought one of these for my travel to Australia - I already have European adapters, but this is universal. It will work in the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia etc - It says the US too and I can't see why not, but one reviewer couldn't get it to work in the US - which isn't a problem for you as you live there. It was balanced in the plugs and I have brought it with me from the UK this time to Portugal also.

My 6P charger plugs straight in and charges rapidly, so a converter with your regular charger is all you need.

Finally, a pro-tip about adapters like this - Only buy one and get a compact extension lead for other devices -works out much more useful as you're not tied to various plug points - also this one has type c built in! Mine didn't!

u/baschmidt903 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I have a Z Line 36 inch hood that is reasonable. The highest settings are a little loud but like somebody above said you don't use that setting often. It was easy enough to put up as well.

u/ShinePale · 3 pointsr/Lighting

It looks like this is the light in question. They make a "yellow" light for the same hood, which seems like it would be more to your liking. Check it out. From the picture, it looks like you can just remove the set screws and swap the new lights in with the quick connect cables.

As always, even with low voltage, I recommend turning the power off at the breaker before you touch anything.

What exactly do you want to do with this oven?

A microwave/toaster is good for reheating cooked food.

if you want to bake cookies and cakes and pizzas you would want to get an oven like this

Do you want to do real cooking or just little snacks?

u/Vlad_the_Homeowner · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Sub'd.

I just had a Z-line put in and was considering doing the same thing. But I've got my hands full at the moment so I probably won't get to it for a few weeks at least. Hope you find a good solution.

u/kovanroad · 1 pointr/NYCRenovations

Interesting, I also have a galley kitchen to contend with.

I was also planning to use the Bertazonni 24" PRO244GASX range early on as well, mainly because it's attractive, and one of the handful of 24" ranges available. However, the reviews online were pretty scathing (e.g., http://www.amazon.com/Bertazzoni-Professional-X304GGVXLP-Pro-Style-Range/product-reviews/B001A5B346/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_hist_1?filterByStar=one_star&pageNumber=1 has 40% one-star reviews). Would probably be good if you were about to sell the apartment or something, but for me, I just don't have the time to deal with any warranty crap.

There's also the smeg C24GGXU, possibly better, and very little else in 24". In the end, decided on a separate under-the-counter oven + gas cooktop combo (of which there are lots of 24" options).

It’s got horrible reviews though.

Basically anything that is going to stand up to repeated heat cycles like that and not break down quickly is going to be a super expensive space age material or just another glass top that you set on top of your glass top.

u/geerlingguy · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

This is the range hood I bought (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0754N5RR9/), and it says it has a built in grease filter (which is fitted before the fan unit); assuming it works effectively, that risk seems like it would be mitigated.

u/francis2559 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

If you prefer yellow to white, you can try this.

I just searched amazon for the model number. If that clip works you should be good even without solder.

Edit: read the reviews carefully, lots of comments saying it goes too far the other way.

u/wahlb3rg · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I use the Max Burton 6200 induction cooktop for my brews and, in my opinion, it works great for what I need it for. I can get about 4 gallons of wort to a rolling boil in a reasonable time, so that means I can do 5-6 gallon partials when doing extract, and 3 gallon All-Grain batches (my boil off rate is 1/2 gallon per hour). My buddy and I brew every weekend so 3 gallons is more than enough each time.

u/sanka · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

Is your pot magnetic? If so you can use a portable induction cooktop. Bonus, you can use it inside.

u/NowhereAtAll · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I've used this one for 90 bucks for a year and I like it a lot. I ferment in 3 gallon carboys so my batch size is normally 2.75 gallons. I'll boil anywhere from 3.75 to 4.5 gallons on the burner and frequently do full volume BIAB mashes in a 6.5 gallon pot.

I will warn you, it won't hold a good boil on those volumes without a lid, but it will hold a decent boil with it cracked open a few inches. If that bothers you're probably going to need a more powerful unit. After running a bunch of tests and getting feedback from others at home brew club meetings a vented boil doesn't concern me.

It takes about 30 minutes to heat water to strike temp and about 30 more to get it to a boil after the mash at those volumes. I think it could drive a 5+ gallon boil if you're willing to wait. My brew days aren't that rushed so I don't mind.

It's mega-cheap(running a 1800w burner for 2.5 straight hours costs me 60 cents), it's consistent, and it puts off extremely little heat since all the heat is coming from the bottom of the kettle, so brewing indoors when you don't want to be outside is an option. If I was going to upgrade, it would be for a larger induction burner or an e-kettle. I don't think I'd go to propane or gas if I had an electric choice.

u/isabelladangelo · 2 pointsr/unpopularopinion

Here is your stereotypical American Oven/Range combo. We just put in the temp in F and hit bake. You can also set the timer - there isn't anything more to it.

I've used the both setting and it seems to heat up the oven too much - that's when things get burnt on the outside but still liquid in the middle. I normally try to half and half it - the first 30 minutes from the bottom of the oven and then switch it to the top but I need to watch the oven way more carefully than an American oven would require.

u/jwraptor · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

My parents bought something similar for my grandparents, they frequently forget to close the stove. So they use induction stove with auto shutoff (when it reaches a certain temperature).

https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Induction-Electric-Stainless-RHAI-13001/dp/B00GTZMHOW

No wifi, but similar purpose. I'm sure you can find one with wifi and auto shut off.

u/thephenom · 2 pointsr/Cooking

This, the hot pot pot is more or less only used for hot pot purpose. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. If you're going to spend $30+ on a hot pot pot, you might as well get the rosewill combo link Extra induction stove for $20.

Induction Heaters.

Other than that, I would buy grain and hops to make more beer

u/clearwind · 1 pointr/AskReddit

If you can get an induction heater, and a toaster oven you would be able to cook almost anything in your dorm.

Z Line KB-36 Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood, 36-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E4O0R3I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dXoMzbZ6R7N27

This one right: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AEG-Stainless-Steel-Digital-Kettle/dp/B00IM94C2I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465395723&sr=8-1&keywords=Electrolux+kettle ?

It kinda bothers me that it has plastic on it. If I'm spending that much on a kettle I kinda want there to be no plastic touching the water.

u/megagreg · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

> I know nothing of electrical.

Leave them the way they are then.

Electrical stuff isn't overwhelmingly difficult, and with only 12V, you're not likely to hurt yourself, but it's easy to end up with no light at all if you do the wrong thing. Also the light appears to (maybe) be potted in #2, which means that even if you understand the electrical part, there may be other considerations for harsh environments that might not occur to you.

Is there a connector on the wire? Would this yellow light be a suitable replacement? I wouldn't consider unplugging one light and plugging in another "electrical work".
