Here's my personal perspective as an office worker in the construction industry (I'm from Canada)

My viewpoint on knives: It is a tool that I use almost everyday. It is NOT for self defense. Knives are impractical for reactionary defense, since if its close quarters an assailant will be on top of you before you can deploy. Which means if you have your knife ready, you have a weapon deployed with intent to harm, which in my eyes makes you the attacker. Kind of a digression, and may get downvoted, but that's my opinion on that.

What I use my knife for everyday (I carry a paramilitary 2):

  • Opening boxes and envelopes
  • Cutting straps and ropes (usually from large shipped equipment)
  • Removing stray threads from clothing
  • In case of emergencies to cut seatbelts, harnesses for a coworker or person in need of help (i do have a dedicated seatbelt cutter too)
  • Cutting or peeling food for my lunch at work
  • Sharpens my pencil in a pinch when I am in the field
  • Quick prune/trim of some stray branches for my hedges at home
  • Generic cutting needs around the backyard
  • Feathersticking to start a fire in my firepit

I have a few friends that are initially intimidated by the fact that I carry a knife. (in their eyes a weapon) and that's fine, because it is a state of mind. Some I have won over because it came in handy in everyday scenarios, helping a friend move, sharing some food, etc.

It also as a lot to do with what kind of knife you carry. If you carry this around, people are probably going to be very intimidated by it. On the other hand if you're carrying a something like this or this you might get a different reaction.

The intent of my post isn't to persuade you into carrying a knife, but rather to hopefully remove the scary stigma around knives.
