Barring some of the more mainstream first-person shooters, it seems like you two might want to dip your toes into other genres.

For example, you might try Age of Empires III. Not the new, online piece-of-shit, but the more recent title from the actual series. It has a lot of thematic flavor, is easy to pick up and learn (even for a relative RTS noob) and has a lot of strategic depth. I convinced my not-an-RTS-gamer wife to try it and it's become one of her favorite games--for a long while, I kept catching her playing it solo all the time!

Sins of a Solar Empire also provides another solid and fun co-op (or versus) experience, this time with a sci-fi bent and a slightly longer deeper curve. It's pacing is different than many other RTS games, however, and alternates from a contemplative strategic feel into dramatic and exciting skirmishes and full on battles. It's a lot of fun, and like AOE3, provides tons of replay. Rebellion is also this games upcoming expansion, so there's a future to it if you like the original.

It's a shame that she won't try NWN2, as that can be a ton of fun played co-op and tips you into the RPG genre a bit, too. Have you suggested any of the older D&D titles that are popular such the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series of games? You can get the entire Infinity Engine line of games for a mere $20--but you may want to hold off, as Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are getting a modern, HD face-lift.

Dead Island is another choice that is RPG-ish, as it appears she isn't tizzy about face-eating zombies. It features drop-in, drop-out as well, if that makes any difference. Since the game has fallen out of favor, the price has also dropped to around $20.

Finally, I might suggest Titan Quest. There's a lot of good things to say about this game and its expansion, even beyond how much fun, how good looking, how addicting and how its co-op is fantastic. Themed with ancient Greek, Egyptian and Asian mythology in what amounts to a notable campaign, it follows the game play of the grand-daddy of its style of game: Diablo 1 and 2. Best of all, you can get the gold version (core + expansion) on Amazon for less than $7.

I believe you mistook the price of Dead Island. The price says $26.77 and you save $13.22. http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Island-Pc/dp/B004PAGJMO/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1324855464&sr=1-4 Correct me if I am wrong because I would love to have Dead Island for $13! Edit: I am looking at the PC game download.
