I've been looking into building my first fixed gear and a friend of mine gave me an old Univega frame he wasn't using. My question is if anyone has any experience with this conversion kit.

I don't have any old parts laying around and I figured this would be an easy way to get everything all at once.
The best deal is to get this conversion kit with a new crank, bottom bracket and wheelset. You can buy all the parts seperately (wheels, tubes, tires, crank, bottom bracket) but all together this is a good deal The wheelset as part of this kit is going to be larger than the 26" wheels currently on your bike.

Once the wheels are on the bike you are going to need to get calipers and measure the "reach" (distance between the hole for mounting brakes and your rims) and order appropriate brakes for your bike. These usually run about $50 and up.
If you get drop bars which on the cheap end are $15 to $20 you are gong to need to get new brake levers and shifters another $40 if you go cheap. Throw in new cabling and housing probably another $10.
Thus far we have a grand total for parts around $300. This assumes you are going to do all of the labor yourself instead of pay a shop $60 an hour to do the work for you.
Even with all of these upgrades the bike will never be as good as spending $300 on a bike with better geometry.
