Here's the deal, at least how I see it, with these off-brand batteries. Some can be decent, but it's hard to tell the good ones from the bad ones because they all look identical. It's like they all use the same external plastic case, but there's no telling what components they are putting inside that case.

I have the Ryobi ONE+ mower that uses two 4ah batteries at the same time. I had two genuine 4ah batteries that worked fine, but i wanted a second set, and those were expensive two or three years ago when this was happening. So I ended up buying a pair of 4ah batteries from Amazon from a brand called Energup that were on sale for like $40 for the pair or something. They had good reviews and were cheap and so I went for it. That pair of batteries is at least as good as the genuine pair and have worked out great in the high-drain mower. In fact, I still use them. They evidently don't make that exact battery anymore, at least from what I can find, but what I got was the 4ah version of this.

So I have a success story, but on the other hand it isn't hard to find people talking about these types of batteries like they're junk. I think it just comes down to whether you get a good one or a bad one out of this sea of seemingly (but not really) identical generic batteries. Another thing to consider is that the new Lithium+ HP batteries supposedly have circuitry in there to give better performance with the new brushless tools. I don't know if the generic batteries have an equivalent of that or if it works as good (or even if the genuine ones really make a difference compared to a regular Lithium+ battery), but that might be something to consider if you have brushless tools or plan to upgrade anytime soon.
