So I had a similar issue on the power side. I had a project with a DC barrel plug and was supplying 5v from a wall adapter. I found out the barrel jack was causing it to drop 2/10ths of a volt causing the rainbow. What I ended up doing was putting a 5v regulator on the inside and supplying 12vdc on the outside.
