I had a very similar problem like this about 5 years ago. It happened after I got a couple more STBs for my brother and sister.

The problem was because we had a more than a few devices we had to use a few splitters. IIRC you lose about 25dB with every splitter and that degrades the signal.

I ended up getting a powered bi-directional amplifier for my house. If you use too many splitters before the modem your internet will suck. If you use too many after your cable boxes suck. This is the best solution for me because it's supplied it's own power and amplifies the STBs and bypasses the modem signal. Basically, you hook up a power coax, the input coax, a regular splitter connection goes to the modem and the other one goes to the amp which amplifies 8 ports for your STB. Even though I have a splitter before even coming into my house, this works perfectly. I had comcast guy come check my signals because my internet was acting funny. It ended up being the modem, which I since replaced with my own modem and router, but he was impressed that I had that amp. All of the signals in every room was perfect.

If you live in a house, follow your main line and see how many splitters there are connected in your circuit. If you have more than a few then get that amp, it's worth it.

would this work for that distributed amplifier? i have one of these already.... and I assume the modem slot is for the office line.

A few hints for amplifiers, since they can be confusing for non-technical people:

  • Some amplifiers have an input and an output, with a certain amount of gain (often 15db), and you provide your own splitter. These are great for custom situations, where you really need to adjust for specific problems or just know what you're doing and can match things properly.

  • If that's not for you, look for an amplifier that has multiple outputs (usually 4 or 8) and 0db output gain, like this one. What this means is that it's matched perfectly, so the signal coming in from the antenna is the same strength as each output -- effectively zero loss due to splitting the signal.

Also, regardless of which amplifier/splitter you use, you should terminate any unused output jacks with an F Terminator. Be sure you get actual 75 ohm terminators and not just a dust cap. It might seem unnecessary, but you want to get the best signal you can here, right?
