I've had a look at the devastator combo and it definitely looks interesting at that pricepoint. However, I would offer the following:

  1. What do you want from your keyboard? Do you want to improve your typing experience or looking to enhance your gaming? Either way, shelling out more money will get you better ergonomics (reduced strain, increased longevity, etc.) and in most cases a big increase in how long a board can stay with you.
  2. Have you considered mechanical switches? I switched a little while back and now I can't imagine buying rubber dome again. It's not because of elitism, it's simply a better experience for me all round and I now live in the knowledge that the board I have will be with me for some time.

There are some really decent boards at reasonable pricepoints scattered all about. The immediate ones that come to mind are:

  3. Corsair K65
  4. CM Storm Quickfire Rapid
  5. Rosewill RK-6000

Granted, these are above the pricepoint mentioned for the devastator but if you're willing, the ergonomics and quality of these boards should vastly outweigh it.

As mentioned, have a look at /r/mechanicalkeyboards once you have a feel for what you want in a keyboard. If you spend significant amount of time behind a computer in the first place (gaming + work can easily soak up dozens of hours a week) then investing in quality kit seems like a good idea.

If you think the Devastator set looks awesome and fits your needs, by all means go for it. Be sure to post pics and your experience when you get it!

EDIT: For reference, have a quick look at the reviews being posted on Amazon. Though not the most reputable source, they do seem to highlight a number of concerns for this combo with build quality and polish. Most notably the fact that the scroll lock key is used to turn the LEDs on and off on the keyboard but simultaneously also turns that function on. This may be a problem if you use programs that respond to that key being on. In addition, it appears that a) the keys are not particularly well-finished and may have some chips in them and b) when the LEDs are off you can't see the writing on the keys. Not a problem if you're a touch typist but if you tend to look at the board while typing you may have issues.

So to reply to myself and leave breadcrumbs of information for anyone else who might find this thread. I found this.

Which seems perfect, except I don't know what switches it uses. Also, the top is a little large, but that's nitpicking.

I think I saw a rosewill mechanical keyboard on amazon for $50 on sale. Not backlit, but rosewill is a pretty solid brand. I'll edit this post if I can find it

Here it is

There's a Rosewill that's 30$, heard it's alright.

And I found this for 40$, seems not too bad.

u/end1 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

mmh not too bad...not cherry mx but i guess thats up to preference. I also found a roosewill keyboard with ALPS switches for 60$ on amazon...

I have only used Cherry MX and Topre so far so i can't really give an opinion on either one

The Rosewill RK-6000 is the least expensive mechanical keyboard I know and is supposed to be pretty good as well.

Decent Amazon and Newegg reviews as well as being sub $50

This one is on sale http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-RK-6000-Mechanical-Programmable-Anti-Ghosting/dp/B00G505M4S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1418373738&sr=8-2&keywords=mechanical+keyboard. I said in an old post that one advantage is that the blue ones click! Also there is reduced input lag, reduced input force, and they are nicer to use.

CM Storm Devastator combo (membrane) - $30

A solid wireless logitech membrane - $25

Inexpensive offbrand AULA mechanical using Kailh Blues, a chinese knockoff of cherry MX's -$40

A rosewill keyboard with ALPS switches, clicky :3 $50

Nice backlit Perixx board with Cherry MX blues. $80

Much past that and you're getting into name brand mechanicals that are fantastic, but expensive. These are just some decent keyboards for their respective prices.

edit: fixed formatting

I agree that there's no solid middle ground of $30-$60 mechanicals. This Rosewill is a possibility. I think Monoprice's basic Cherry MX keyboard is occasionally discounted to $35ish. The clearance section at your local electronics retailer (we have Fry's and Micro Center here) may have good stock with better prices; my MC had a bunch of Ducky Zeros that were 20% off, new in box. Finally there's the used market here on Reddit or eBay. I'm not so sure about the cheapo Chinese boards that are probably going to start flooding the market.

u/TunapathaN · 1 pointr/keyboards

I see.

Personally I would recommend a mechanical keyboard to anyone who spends a decent amount of time on a computer.

This is one of the cheaper make/models but still has good reviews, also a friend has been using one for years and is quite happy with it.

EDIT: So apparently there is some weird mix up. This is the keyboard i'm familiar with, a bit more expensive but still on the cheaper side compared to other mech keybaords. I thought my original link was to the same keyboard but with blue switches, after looking it up apparently they are not.

I have this one that you can have for $30

Rosewill RK-6000 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Programmable Keys Anti-Ghosting Feature and Laser Printed Keys https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G505M4S/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_NQlmxbMZ824ZR

It's pretty shitty, but that's probably the best you'll get for $30.

u/Acknown3 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

The cheapest you can get is this, but I definitely suggest spending a few more dollars for a better layout. There's a quickfire rapid on eBay for ~$65.

u/WeeHeeHee · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. What kind of price range is normal?
