I agree, and I recommend patching tires to all my friends. It's super easy and works real well, even to reseal tubeless.
For particularly large cuts, I'll sometimes stitch the sidewall with thread (or in this case, dental floss), and use a radial car tire patch, which is stronger than a traditional Rema patch. Otherwise, just clean the inside, sand down the spot a bit, and stick a patch on there. I use a big plastic clamp from Harbor Freight to hold the patch tight for 12 hours, while the glue cures. Using one of these tricks, I have never damaged a tire beyond repair.
