Save money!

Don't buy a fancy made in the US bike light... there is a cheap chinese light that is crazy bright and works great: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F9UZABA/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My friend and I have a total of three of those and they all work really well, even after winter commuting in the rain and snow and being recharged a lot. They get great battery life and are super bright. You can buy like 4 for the price of one decent American light.

I set the first picture as closely as I could to how my eye sees it – obviously cameras aren't as good with dynamic range. They look close enough to what I saw.

I'd say riding on the road would be rude. If I do, I'll have the light on my head turn way down and the one on my handlebars positioned so as to not blind drivers.

Still, I think 95% of my night riding is going to be on trails, in which case I just want lots of light! Around here, nobody uses trails – especially at night – so there's no worry about blinding people there.

This is my handlebar light

This is my helmet light (as well as the light I'll be carrying around with me everyday. I'm just mounting it with rubber bands)

This is the light I compared to at the end

A very good front light option. Yes it's one of those Chinese Amazon lights but it's very bright and powerful. We use these mountain biking in addition to a headlamp and it provides good visibility. And it's quite affordable. The downside is the quality control isn't as high as a store bought model.
