Where I'm living, I've taken to using my timber bell to avoid startling all the animals including not just farm dogs wandering out of their yards but also horses and their riders, coyotes, and mountain lions, especially at blind corners or where it's low visibility. I agree, as other comments described, the farm dogs are more threatening as they are guarding their territory. They're the ones that have been the most aggressive and chased me the most. The other day, on a pretty steep hill climb, as I got close to the top, a dog was waiting for me, just outside an open gate. It looked a bit spooked. Before I got to it, I dismounted, spoke to it like it was my own pet, "that's a good boy," and it stayed relaxed, didn't even stand up, and I walked past it. Seemed okay so I got back on my bike, rode about 15 feet when I was startled by the sounds of it giving chase. I looked back, told it it was okay, slowed down, and it stopped and turned back. I shook my head in exasperation, wiped the poop out of my chamois, and continued on. The self-defense stuff I carry is for the local humans not the dogs.
Multi-use trails can be a real drag, even without shitty attitudes. Don't let it get you down though.
Anyone that rides multi-use trails, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a Timber Bell. A lot of hikers don't know what the bell is coming from but at least it gets their attention (assuming they aren't wearing headphones). I've had a few people on foot remark about how great the bell is to give warning. The nice thing is that you can disable the bell while you're climbing or on trails that are MTB only.
Maybe mount one of these cans of bear spray to your frame? It comes with the holster. Has good range. No need to fight off a bear with a knife... because... that won't end well.
Also maybe just a continuous bell on your bike? I have this bell with built in silencer and love it. Easy to flick on and off.
