I totally missed reading this thread last week! #vacationprobs

  • Jamz of the week is whatever comes on my Band Perry Pandora station. Doing a lot of repetitive stuff this week so I like to jam along in mah head.
  • What have you been dreaming about (sleep-dreaming? daydreaming? future-dreaming?) lately well it was the beach, and it's probably still the beach! And also about our house, I suppose. We had some resort credit so we bought this really pretty vase and I already know exactly where it's going to go in our yet-to-be-built house. That's probably weird, but it makes me feel all happy inside! Oh, and not really daydreaming, but wanting to get these shoes now that they are so far below list price! Beautiferous black and electric blue! http://www.amazon.com/ASICS-Womens-Gel-Kayano-Running-Lavender/dp/B00GU7B4QQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1415197833&sr=1-1
  • What's a bucket list thing of yours - to go back to the UK and see the Highlands! Travelling to various awesome places pretty much takes up my bucket list. New Zealand, Montana/Wyoming/Yellowstoney area/Italy, France......pretty much everywhere!
  • Do you have any party tricks? ummmmm, sometimes my sarcasm makes people laugh? Haha, I'm usually pretty good about remembering facts about people to use to engage them in conversation.
  • Tips on how to stick to goals during the stressful holidays? - oh boy, this one is tough. Continuing to workout if I can is big for two reasons - it works off some of those calories and it reminds me how hard it is to work off those calories so it's fresh in my mind when I want more pie! And just things like others have said - stick to one plate, skip things you don't totally love - I used to find myself taking both sweet and mashed potatoes. I'm like what, I don't like mashed as much as sweet, just take sweet! It's definitely hard though.
  • Favorite holiday? I'm a bit with dino on this - holidays get a bit stressful between all the mandatory gift giving (which I am hoping to reduce this year), some family tension stuff, and being expected to attend 2094 different family gatherings. There are good things too...my favorite holiday.....I still like Christmas and Thanksgiving a lot, but just as I've gotten older, Christmas has become more stress. But I probably still like that stretch from Christmas to NYE the best. Husband and I usually go out for a nice dinner on NYE and I enjoy that a lot.
  • PICTURE OF YOU (or something) here is me standing in front of some future wine this summer. I have one photo after I got done with my Color Run, but it's terrible and no one should see it, haha.

The Smith machine can be good for certain people in certain situations, like if there's a problem with their stabilizing muscles, or for injury recovery. And I get that it's attractive for people worried about lack of spotters, but that's what safety bars or power racks are for.

So yeah, try not to squat in those squishy, cloud-like shoes. Keep thinking of pushing through your heels, but the cue is really to help you maintain your total foot contact - you don't want to overcorrect into being on your heels so hard that you could actually lift your toes. But it's a cue because, like you, many people "want" to push more from their toes, so don't feel alone on that!

For now, just use your metcons, and maybe try some goblet squats in addition to the Smith machine. "Real lifting shoes" are hard-soled with a raised heel. They provide a solid connection to the ground, and the raised heel helps with range-of-motion. I'm a crossfitter, so I use Inov-8 Fastlifts which are lighter and more flexible than true lifting shoes like Nike Romaleos, but many people lift in chucks or vans. Your metcons are a perfectly fine shoe to start in. If you're getting more serious about it in a few months, then spend the money on lifting shoes.

Good luck with the rolling. Hopefully we can help more once you record some sets for us to see!

Hi! So to follow up on my previous message...

Once a new version of a shoe comes out, it is often the case that you can get the previous year's model on sale. A lot of popular marathon training/racing shoes have been around for a number of years and in many cases, the changes made from one year to the next are pretty minor and not necessarily even an improvement for some people.

This brings me to my next point, which is that everyone's feet and running styles are different (and hence why some people will really like a shoe released one year and find the next release of the same model inferior), and as such, while there certainly are some popular models out there, no one shoe suits everyone. The usual recommendation is to go to a running shop, try on loads of shoes and try running in them! All good running shops that I am aware of will let you go for a run either on a treadmill or outside of the shop. If you buy online, a number of shops seem to have pretty generous return policies (e.g. some companies will let you try the shoe out for a month!). One way or another, I strongly recommend you try on a bunch of shoes from different brands.

To get you started, as an example, here are some Saucony Men's Freedom ISO. Depending on the size and colour, they are going for as little $72.34. Search around for them on reddit and elsewhere…
this is a much loved shoe! Here is an even more popular shoe Saucony Men’s Kinvara for as low as $69.92. Depending on which generation (I’m forgetting which though, 8s maybe?), many people consider this too be one of the best marathon shoes out there. One of my personal favorites — HOKA ONE ONE MEN’S Cavu starting at $71.44........These were the first three shoe models I searched for and all 3 of them, depending on size and colour, seem to be obtainable for a significantly reduced price.

My advice would be to search around on reddit and try to get a sense of what are some popular marathon shoes. I find /r/artc especially good for this.

Happy shopping!

I am the most indecisive person when it comes to shoes. I find it a really awkward thing to buy, specially in-store when you have to do that little test walk that makes people always walk funnily rather than normal.

I think its really hard to have a look for someone else so I focused on what I am looking for.

I started with comfort so you have a few different style of Skechers.
1)I dont know your family situation but these strike me as dad sneakers lol
2)These are a little bit more serious. I am from the UK so terminology is somewhat different. Not sure if you would consider them sneakers
3)These are sportier and ideal if you like to run but dont want to spend way too much on running shoes
4)Nike also has these running shoes I have always liked Nike shoes and they have a variety of colours, even if size 15.
5)I think these Adidas look amazing. I love that combination of colours.
6)Last but not least, another pair of Nike ones that I liked

Let me know what you think. I think I found it easier than choosing for myself which is very odd. I guess the hard part for me is making the final decision!

Should I win, I am happy for you to surprise me.

Thank you and have a nice day

Girlsplaywow is a jerk.

Or wait... is she?!

Congrats on your first 10k! I'm doing my first one in two weeks!

I have a few things on my list I really want... These Dr. Sholl's shoes range in price from 45 to 70, but I love love love them.. I've also had these running shoes on my WL for a while. And of course, either of the Urban Decay Naked Palettes would be great!

Also Happy Anniversary!

I normally run in vibram five fingers, but they don't cut it for winter running for me.

Two winters ago was quite dry in Rochester, NY so I bought http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Barefoot-Trail-Adventure-Yellow/dp/B004L8UPZM/ Merrell Trail Gloves. I like the shoes in dry weather, but they are not a good shoe for wet weather or hills. They have uphill traction, but seem like they are designed to lose all traction on downhills.

Last winter I bought Inov-8 Mudclaw 265s http://www.amazon.com/Inov-8-Mudclaw-Trail-Running-Shoe/dp/B008VPX09Y and could not be happier. I ran in snow, ice, and wore them with racing snow shoes and they performed perfectly. Every time I put my foot down it stayed exactly where I placed it, no slip, even on the steepest of trails.

The only downside to the Mudclaws is that the rubber is fairly soft when the weather gets warm. They should be winter only shoes in the city, or you will wear through the tread quickly if you run on pavement/concrete on a warm day (I swear I could feel the shoes wearing away as they stuck to the road on a hot day).

http://kahtoola.com/product/microspikes/ are also great, but probably overkill for city running. They worked great interlocking with the gnarly tread on the Mudclaws for super icy races.

Wool socks are magic and worth the money.

u/Batoriova · 9 pointsr/running

I don't know if this is really an achievement, but I bought real running shoes this week! I have wanted them for a while, but I told myself they would only be a reward after I showed a sufficient commitment to running.

Now, after almost 2 months of running and a 5k race under my belt, I feel like a real runner, and I decided my feet/legs deserved some good shoes. I got the gait analysis and everything, and I'm in love with my new shoes! They were even on sale because they were last year's model of the New Balance 880 in light blue.

u/SarcasticFrenzy · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I actually added gift cards to my wishlist today. My Fiance decided he wanted to get married sooner than January, so I had to get serious about planning out wedding. Anyway, I'm not saving gift cards for any one particular thing, but plan on using any I get for wedding supplies, favors, etc.

BUT after the wedding is said and done, I'll be saving gift cards for a pair of these [shoes] (http://www.amazon.com/ASICS-Womens-Gel-Noosa-Running-Turquoise/dp/B00D86KZ4Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1395606757&sr=8-3&keywords=Noosa) because I know they're super comfortable and would be good for work, but I'm too cheap to drop a chunk of change like that on shoes.

  • Greed: My weightlifting shoes. Somehow they make me feel so competent, like I'm in the right place and clearly I know what I'm doing because I've got the foot-wear. [Disclaimer: I do not know what I'm doing]
  • Wrath: Single leg Romanian deadlifts, no matter how much or how little weight. I can't keep steady, no matter what I do. Considering that I can handle serious single leg yoga poses, head-stands, etc. without batting an eye, my inability to do SLRD's causes me endless frustration.
  • Gluttony: Hiking. I love hiking, but by its very nature it takes hours and hours. No ragrets.
  • Sloth: Foam rolling. I know, blasphemy. Instead I just push through the DOMS pain and pretend everything feels okay and that it isn't a trial to lower myself onto the toilet after leg day. [Disclaimer #2: Every day is leg day]
  • Pride: My thighs. Despite my strength training being fairly on-again-off-again, from the moment I decided to put effort into learning to lift weights my thighs have gained a gorgeous teardrop-shaped muscle that only fades slightly during my off-weeks/months. They make me feel like I could crush men's skulls like sparrow-eggs.
  • Lust: Flawless squat form and the kind of ass that mesmerizes. A sub-31 minute 5K (current time is 31:56, but I've only ever run 5K like 3 times and up until around February of this year I thought I was medically incapable of running, so I'm still pretty proud of that time).
  • Envy: Squatting heavy. Bench pressing more than half your body weight. A beautiful and effortless Vinyasa flow. PULL UPS.

Oh, wow, haha, I own both of those pairs of New Balances! I bought mine on Amazon, but it looks like they're out of maroon in those exact styles.

I did dig up some similar ones, though:

One

Two - Leather!

Three

A couple tips, too---I would personally recommend a shape closer to the 420s over the flatter 402s, because the elevated heel gives them much better support overall. I also found those particular 402s to run INSANELY small. I'm normally an 11 in women's shoes, and ended up with those in a men's 10.5! I'm not sure if this is a foot shape issue, but for some reason, men's NBs run insanely small for me and women's NBs run true to size. It's very strange.

Hiitave shoes on Amazon. They're inexpensive Chinese things that look like Fivefingers without the fingers, but they're great. Super wide toe box. I love them.

u/Spongi · 4 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

These look kind of, weird/different but holy moley are they comfortable.

I borrowed a pair from a friend to try them out. Extremely comfortable to walk, jog, run or hike in. I like to mess around out in the woods a lot, and climbing up the steeper hills/slopes is so much easier with these. Barefoot I end up getting little pokey things in my feet (briars, thorns, sharp rocks, etc.) but these are sturdy enough to keep those out, but flexible enough that you can bend your toes for extra traction/control.

I'm going to splurge for a nice pair of these as soon as I can afford it.

I really like these: NIKE Men's Flex 2016 RN Running Shoe Black/Dark Grey/Ghost Green/White Size 15 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004BUNLKG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Sel1AbWXYNPQ9

And surprise me!

I hope you have a great Monday and a great week. Any special plans this week?

u/katyg · 2 pointsr/C25K

These are mine and I love them.

While this may be a good time to get some new kicks, it's also a good time to have your gait re-evaluated at a running specialty store so you can be sure you are selecting the right kind of new shoes for what you need. Good luck!

u/super_cheeky · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I personally really love these New Balances and have had my eye on them for a while but haven't bit yet. I need new gym shoes but I can also see myself wearing them casually. They are kind of statement-y though, especially in the red, which is what I want. I also own Air Force ones and another pair of high top Adidas sneakers and like those too. I'm generally an Adidas gal and the Stan Smiths are excellent, as well as the Sambas.

  1. This or This

  2. I am on a weight loss journey - I was going to the gym faithfully - everyday, 6 times a week, before a very heartbreaking personal tragedy struck. This was last year, I lost almost 60 lbs at that point. I didnt have the coping mechanisms to not just shut down completely. And thats exactly what I did. I didnt destroy my weight loss completely, ,but because all I would do was stay in bed and cry/sleep, i gained 34 lbs back. For the past two weeks, I have been dead set on getting back on track. I started going to the gym again, one problem. My tennis shoes are a wreck..ive had them for over 6 years. I am a mother to a 5 year old little boy who I need to be alive for, I need to be a mother to him. I want to have the energy to run around the park chasing him, teaching him how to hit a baseball, ride a bike, ALL THAT. I feel tremendous guilt because I cant do that. Not to mention I am a single mom, so there is no "dad" that can do these things for him while I am on the road to getting healthy. I also am trying to save up for a little bit of home equipment (cheap barbells and resistance bands) for home, on the days I have prior obligations with my little one. Im beyond dedicated, and cant wait to see what an amazingly healthy and productive year 2016 will be for me! Its time for me to be the mother my son deserves and ill be damned if anything gets in my way. You would be helping me achieve a lifelong goal. No matter how small, it makes a difference. Thank you! Happy New Year! - Any of the weight loss stuff on my wishlist would be appreciated if by some chance im chosen and you'd rather pick something else. This is so important to me, and I cannot thank you for this oppritunity enough. Just the chance - is appreciated.
u/littlest_ginger · 3 pointsr/Ultralight

Interesting! I guess I'm still trying to figure out all the different kinds of shoes. Hiking boots vs shoes vs trail shoes vs trail running shoes etc. I think I'm starting to understand, though.

All I know about my feet is that I was born with a crazy bunion on my right foot, so it looks like my (long, creepy-looking) toes are all canted hard to the right. My left foot is normal, but my mutant right foot will tear right through the inside toe box if I wear them long enough.

The running shoes I've loved for the last year are Adidas Women's Cloudfoam QT Racer with a Powerstep full-length insole. Thank you!

u/bennypandemonium · 3 pointsr/powerlifting

If you're looking for lifters, I LOVE my Innov-8 fast lifts. The heels are solid. A great deal on Amazon.

I recently got a pair of the Innov-8 fast lite for general work. Love them too!

u/nikils · 2 pointsr/nursing

I'm a little late to this thread, but I consider myself something of a shoe expect after trying many, many different kinds for my old, broken-down feet.

First, waterproof. None of those mesh styles that "breathe". I will never forget walking into a dialysis patient's room at night and suddenly splashing into a puddle. You do NOT want something that would soak that or other fluids up.

Washable. I don't like to think about the germs I pick up while walking around in patient room. I come in from work, the shoes go into a basket by the door, and the scrubs go into a laundry basket. (I know one hard-core germiphobe that has slippers in the car and a plastic bag for the shoes.)

After suffering for many years, and trying all kinds of shoes, I transitioned over to a barefoot type of shoe. The theory is that the more cushioned the shoe, the weaker your foot becomes since it is unable to flex and more as nature intended. This type actually strengthens your foot over time. It literally changed my feet for the better, but there is a significant adjustment period.

Last, but most important for school, keep in mind that some nursing programs get picky about colors and styles for their clinical "uniform". I was only supposed to wear all white shoes, with no other colors or any writing or logo visible. (Stupid) Might want to wait until you know what they allow.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

WHY ARE YOU YELLING DIRECTIONS AT US!

Diablo on my Champagne Tastes List: because this game makes me ridiculously happy and ADDING things to this game is so exciting for my little nerd self.

Army Wives on my DVD list is one of my highest: because that show rocks my boring little world.

Shoes on my Expensive Needs list: because I need to lose weight and I need shoes to do it in since I have a new exercise bike and my best friend and I learned walking around the track at night is actually freaking fun!

Monopoly on my PS3 list: because it's Monopoly o.o

A Gummy Bear Light: on my default Spluring List because it's neat, and pink, and a light, and I just think it's neat honestly.

Ps: I thought your linked item was a roll of paper towels until I read your description >.>

u/Joonami · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

Unless I'm deadlifting, I wear my Nike Metcons lifting. I would eventually like to buy a pair of romaleos for squats but they're like $200 and that's a hard pill to swallow for me 😂

I don't run but I do my cardio on the elliptical and I got some Altra trail running shoes (good for hiking as well). I really like them and they come in some cute colors!
