Reddit mentions: The best soda maker parts

I have accidentally made crystal clear ice in one of these and it wasn't boiled and it was from the tap. I have always wondered how that happened.
Again, I have tried boiling the water, but it didn't do what I wanted close enough. I have NOT tried boiling the water in the plastic tray or with plastic wrap on it. I didn't think that plastic wrap was not air permeable.
I will try to use these sphere ice cube trays I have and boil the water in the microwave and cover it in plastic wrap.
I did try to boil water, pour it in these trays, and I used a bar clamp to cinch the mold between two flat glass plates. I tried to make it airtight. Then, I froze that. It got a LITTLE clear, but not enough.
How close could I get with this? My question is...if it was YOU trying to make a solid sphere of ice that is as clear as possible, what would you do? Efficiency and utility aside. I was this purely for aesthetic purposes to impress my friends when we drink.

EDIT: I'm still willing to pay for something like this. A glass tray for ice that will allow me to microwave water and boil it safely, then with smooth edges that I can wrap plastic wrap around or clamp a rubber board on top of for freezing. If there is no top to the ice cube tray, I would imagine that glass wouldn't have an issue anymore and I wouldn't be worried about melting plastic or anything while boiling the water.

Its a little more expensive but you get money back for returning sodastream cylinders and drinkmate, plus free returns. Very simple

I wish Soda Stream them self just sold larger canisters so I don't need to change it out so often. Would be cheaper for them and for me too due to marginal cost scaling.

Good point, it is a McCanns 43 carbonator tank. In fact, it is the one in that ebay listing. I didn't look at the photos closely enough to realize that the fittings were not standard flare fittings.

If you look at this listing on Amazon you can see that the discharge from the pump to the carbonator vessel (through that stainless tubing loop) connects through a flare fitting.

Unfortunately, this ebay one has this socket with a pin hole in it.

I think I'll have to contact McCanns directly and see if they can help me out.

Depends on the brand of carbonated water you prefer and the brand of the machine you use. For the sodastream, this $33 canister is the cheapest refill I could find. It makes up to 60 liters of carbonated water which works out to $0.55 per liter. Looking on Amazon, most carbonated water cost between $0.03 and $0.04 per Fl Oz. 1 liter is a about 34 oz so it costs between about $1.02 per liter for the lower price and you save $0.47 which does make it cheaper but your local prices may be different. This doesn't factor in the startup cost which I can't calculate now but just a rough guess is that you're going to have to drink a couple hundred liters to get to the break even point at which point it's going to get significant enough that you'll have to factor in water usage so the answer is that it eventually will be cheaper but it might take a while. Probably a year or two if you drink a liter a day.

Also, I've found that if you squeeze the bottle until the liquid is almost at the top and then put the cap on tightly it will prolong the carbon dioxide in the bottle.

People are free to buy what they choose but as you asked why so many people have skipped reading the page and only commenting on the price? We realize it's overkill. My bottled drinks always stay carbonated.

After considering the three DIY options, I've decided on the adapter hose and a 10 lb. CO^2 tank. Apparently CO^2 is liquid while resting in the tank, so to refill canisters you have to either use a siphon tube or turn the supply tank upside down.

Pretty sure you're actually making it worse. It's been a while since my chemistry classes but the equilibrium here should be based on pressure rather than concentration.

Because you've removed a fair bit of gas from a bottle that's still the same size, it will take considerably more gas released from the beverage before the pressure equalizes.

That device does the opposite of what you're doing, and increases the pressure in the bottle, meaning less gas will leave the soda.

By the way, you're going to want to run this without regulator. The SodaStream needs full pressure. Their own tank cylinders don't have a regulator either.
