You can still tape the knob/shaft of the blade, but the heat may get the tape to gum up and ruin your gloves (sorry, I'm just assuming Houston gets super toasty in the summer).

Balls are good for practice, but it won't translate directly to puck feel. If it's within your budget, grab a few green biscuits; these emulate puck feel the best off the ice.

IMO, pads are essential but I'm probably biased as someone who plays goalie most of the time. My friends and I have tried playing without one (we just played posts) and it just wasn't the same. If you or your friend want to play goalie on ice, just be aware that the mechanics are really different since you can't slide on asphalt. And of course, check if you have a beginner's league or a learn to play league at your rink.

I don't think you'll be doing yourself much good. It may help minimally, but the dynamics of shooting a tennis ball and hockey puck are different, especially if you're a beginner (which I don't know).

For example, elevating a tennis ball in a wrist shot would probably involve opening the face of your blade as you release. If you got into the habit of doing this in your wrist shot, it could negatively affect your form with a real puck.

There are soft rubber pucks available that may be a better option if you can't shoot a green biscuit/roller puck/hockey puck without causing damage. For your form alone, I think these would be better. Here is an example.

yes they have non game used pucks i bought one one when I went for preseason, forgot how much it cost but it was for sure less than 25 dollars.

they have them on Amazon for 14.00 I'm sure you could find them elsewhere for cheaper as well.

I've been using some pretty cheap franklin street hockey pucks, picked one up at a 5 dollars-or-less store, for 2.99, and its lighter than an actual puck and about the weight of a ball. It just doesn't glide nearly as well as anything, and honestly when it comes to street hockey I'd rather just use a ball.

But you didn't seem too concerned about the actual puck, as much as someone getting hurt. And for 3 dollars I think you can accept at least trying it out. It's 6.99 here but I'm definitely sure you can find it somewhere else.

I've seen a few people with the glow in the dark paint, but it seems to wear off fairly quick, especially with the friction from the tape on the end of the sticks and stuff, that's also something to keep in mind.

However; it seems they sell these as well (Found on ELT4nubs' link) Glow In The Dark Pucks for only like $7

They aren't "game used" pucks. Just "official pucks". They sell them at the fan shops in the arena. Like This.

We get the "official" ones for consistency vs pucks that look like This
