I love these. A friend at work gave me a sleeve two seasons back and I'm still playing them. They're a great ball for a great price -- http://www.amazon.com/Wilson-Staff-Golf-Balls-White/dp/B006M46TDU.

Amazon has a deal on Srixon Q-star Tours. A dozen for $19.99 plus 50% off if you subscribe and save. They feel like premium golf balls yet have low compression for slower swing speeds. Definitely one of my favorite golf balls for the price.

I just started playing the Callaway Hexbites after looking at a bunch of alternatives Amazon link

Right now I loose around a sleeve a round and couldn't justify paying for the TP5 and ProV1's I had been playing. Still wanted to get a 3 piece urethane with at least at L-M rating, if not a L-H (First letter is spin off the tee, second is spin around the green USGA ratings) I've been liking them.

From lessons I've got the most important thing is to play one ball and get more consistent. I'm a 19 handicap and just go out with my buddies and have really been liking the Callaway can't really beat it at 35 bucks for 2 dozen. Once my handicap drops below 14 (if it ever does) then I'll look to upgrade my ball again.

>but the obsession cracks me up

I think it's partly just because people realize they're up against the grey market resellers who may quite literally have nothing better to do than wait outside a store for an hour for some golf balls. If these things were regularly in stock it'd be the same as other balls - just pick up a box when you need it. But given the scarcity, out comes the 'obsession'.

There's also the issue of not wanting to buy more expensive yet "worse" balls. Let's just use these as an example. Why bother stocking up on a "worse", more expensive ball when there's potential to be able to buy a "better" ball for cheaper. At that point it's not even so much of a "I MUST HAVE KIRKLANDS" as it is a "I feel a little ripped off playing these Noodles." That's kind of a strong feeling for me, at least, given I bought 2doz Wilson Duo's quite literally the day before the most recent Kirkland online restocking happened.

I played my first round with them just recently and while I'm positive there's some placebo effect going on, they are definitely great balls, and I won't think twice about buying them again.

Something like this:

The possibilities are endless when you loosen restrictions on equipment.

As for rules, most apply to technology but things like stroke and distance on Out of Bounds. Mulligans. I'm not saying I have the answer but creative thinking can be used.

I typically buy used AAA balls like callaway or nike which are like $20 for 50 balls and in my experience they have been good enough quality for me. I've been golfing infrequently for several years (I suck) but even though they're used they've been good enough for me

Definitely the Titlist NXT line. It's buttery off of the irons, spins off the wedges, and feels soft off of the putter. It doesn't curve in the air as much as a normal Tour Ball would either, only on command. You can get them for pretty cheap on Amazon. Another good ball is the Bridgstone e6, they feel soft on the irons too. and a cheap back-up ball that iv'e tried is, surprisingly enough, the Wilson Duo, which felt best off of the driver for me, and the feel off of my irons wasn't bad either but i didn't like it for short game that much.

Ass Reaper hot sauce always makes me giggle. I am not sure how good it is (medium is too hot for me), but it is silly looking.

My wife got me a snazzy Swiss army one for Christmas. It has a few blades on it an a detachable ball marker. It's pretty sweet.

You can find The 2015 model of TM Tour Preferred balls and The 2014 model of Bridgestone B330 S balls on Amazon for a very reasonable price. I have just been getting to the point where a good ball is worth it to me and have been buying these. It has made a world of difference around the greens from the ~$15-$18 balls I was buying.

u/BernieRussell · 1 pointr/golf

These balls are the best and so cheap. Very soft. Wilson Zip

u/crashXCI · 2 pointsr/golf

If you're in the US, you can get the Tour Preferred (1 generation older than the TP5) on Amazon for about $28. Other good choices would be Srixon Q Star Tour and the Taylormade Project a. There's also a new Project (a) that launched 1-2 weeks ago.

All of the above have urethane covers, which will generally generate more spin on your irons and wedges.

They actually do work pretty well. They're banned from use in USGA sanctioned tournament play. But I'm guessing you're not playing in too many tournaments as a beginner.

u/thelastcookie · 1 pointr/golf

Ahh, I almost ordered them... but at the last minute I switched to these. I'm still way too new at this to pay so much for balls I will lose. Gotta ease into that I think, lol.

u/xlax1105 · 3 pointsr/golf

First time every in the 70's. I've been a mid 80s to low 90's golfer for awhile and i'm finally finding my stroke. I haven't hit 120 balls a day, but i'm doing what i can. As for my net, that hasn't lasted, but i've changed my setup and now hit these callaway foam balls amazon into open space. You can see ball flight and get a better feel for your shot.

u/parteetime · 5 pointsr/golf

I would consider Wilson Staff Fifty Elite Golf Balls, Dozen Slide Pack

Or Wilson Duo golf balls used from Craigslist/eBay.

They're both within that budget but I would much prefer the used Duos over 50. 50 feels a little harder to me than the duo which probably plays similarly to the mojos.

u/jjunior1212 · 3 pointsr/golf

Check out the Wilson 50. About $13 a dozen and not hard as a rock. I use it as my winter ball.
