Hey guys, new to the subreddit. I've seen a few other similar posts on here from other people. Most of them are pretty outdated, so I thought I'd put up a post for myself personally.

I've been thinking for awhile about getting into longboarding, so I'm completely new to this and have very little knowledge in it. I do know that finding the right type and make of a board depends on the rider's physical build.

I'm an average height female and weigh around 270-280 lbs. My shoe size is 6.5 in men's. I'm really only gonna be using the board to cruise and maybe learn some tricks on flat ground.

I'd like a board that can support my weight but is also aesthetically pleasing. Don't wanna pay for a board that I'm not crazy about appearance-wise as well, right? A symmetrical board is all I'm really looking for other than the weight support factor.

I would like to not spend too, too much on my first board. A complete board would be ideal as well. Preferably below $100. I was looking at some Ten Toes longboards (https://www.amazon.com/Ten-Toes-Board-Emporium-Skateboard/dp/B01L6V7J1E), since I really like their shape and design but wanted to get a second opinion but I jumped the gun.

Thanks!

Hey everyone

I'm new to longboarding (couple of weeks) and I bought my first board off amazon (yeah I know they suck but I didn't have a lot of money to spend and just wanted to try it out so don't judge me please).

So I got this board for like $70 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MU91KTA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501970316&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=volador%2Blongboard&dpPl=1&dpID=51YRN0trH%2BL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

Turns out I really like riding and wanted to invest some more as I progress. My question is, is it worth to upgrade the trucks/wheels on this board or not and just get another board from the brands at sidebar wiki beginner guide? Or if you have any tips in general regarding getting a board for noob

Thanks in advance! Have a great day

I can't see the website you linked right now because I'm at work and we don't have filters. I'm not familiar with the Currency rate, but if i recall correctly it's almost double the USD right? So 100 pounds sounds like a 200$ american board. You probably don't need to spend that much. But I don't know the currency rate.

I don't know if you guys can order from Zumiez http://www.zumiez.com/build-your-own-skateboard/ You must have something similar in Europe if not. But check out that link and build one of the $99.99. You really should go for the $119.99 But I know how appealing saving money is to you. And a representative did tell me that some of their $39.99 boards are actually pretty comparable to the 49.99 ones.

Most skaters will say not to buy from a Corporation like Zumiez and say to support your local shop, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Seriously, they best advice someone gave you was to just go to your local shop, tell the guy you want a decent quality board but are looking for savings. They'll show you what you can get for the prices your looking for. But most likely that means spending AT LEAST $100 USD, and probably more. Also, if your looking for savings you should stop looking online where you're going to have to pay shipping. Just go check out your local shop.

Anybody have input on these complete setups for him? I know their good board companies... But for so cheap there must be some catch... Is it the Trucks/wheels/ETC?

Alright, thank you for the help, I really appreciate it!

Would I be better off getting a complete kit off of Amazon, or building it as a custom? And with the specifications I provided, would this be a good option to consider or would I get better bang for buck from Muirskate? :

If not that, then how about this?

Thanks so much, you guys are seriously helping me not throw all my money away on generics

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get my first board. I'm 20yo and 145-ish lbs--size 10 to 10½ shoes. From what I've seen, I need something from 7.5 to 7.625.

I really don't want to drop too much into it because I have a bad track record of spending way too much on hobbies I decide to not pursue. I've been doing my research, and know what to look for (quality-wise). I'm looking to spend $50 or so for a complete. Nothing fancy. A high quality blank would be fine. Are they any Black Friday deals I should look out for? Here's what I'm looking at so far:

POSITIV Team Complete Skateboard ($59.46): The reviews look really good for the price. It looks durable and high quality. Not sure of the brand, though.

Krown Rookie Skateboard Complete 7.5 ($31.00): I love this damn board. I know it is a lot cheaper, and you get what you pay for, but I like the graphic far more than anything in my price range (I know, I know, don't buy a board for its graphic). That being said, the build quality seems pretty damn good and the brand looks reliable(?). The only problem I found was the bearings were garbage. It's so cheap, though, I'd still have it in my budget to get some.

ENJOI Skateboards WHITEY PANDA Complete SKATEBOARD ($69.99): This looks like the safest option--but also the most expensive. Everywhere I looked said the brand is good quality. Again, though, I really don't want to spend this much.

Any opinions on each of these brands? I don't really care about having a walmart board as long as the build quality is there.

u/DetectiveJohnKimbel · 1 pointr/longboarding

Hey I am 6'4" and I have huge shoes about size 14, I want a board like this or this . I like the first one more and want to know what different types of boards are used for (ie: cruising, shredding, fast, minimal effort needed). Personally I will go cruising around a lot so a minimal effort board that takes a few pushes to get going fast and for a long time without having to push again, and I want a board easy to balance on while going down medium/small hills with it. I will definitely be hitting some moderate hills though so I'm guessing most of you would recommend upgrading to a more expensive board by then but for now I am not very serious about gearing up. Also what is the difference between a pre built board and one you have to get parts for and assemble? Thank you to anybody who can help me out!

u/gitterwibbit · 2 pointsr/longboarding

Thanks for your input, but I'm really not looking to learn all of this stuff. I really just want to get a decent board online or somethin', fully setup, and be done. Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I just wanna get somethin' good and be done.

I'm thinking of picking up one out of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008EZNY4W/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NR4MCUW/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B008EZNYOW/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

Which would ya say is the best in terms of durability, stability, and handling. I'm really looking for something that can make swift turns, pick up speed, and be stable.

Sorry that I'm incredibly uninformed on how all this works. But I really just wanna pick up a solid, decent board that can do those things.

Also, my neighborhood has some rocky, bad roads, sometimes. Sometimes its solid, sometimes its jagged. Which one of those boards above can keep up with it while still being stable?

If those can't do the job, could you link something that could thats >100$?

u/anewsubject · 4 pointsr/longboarding

Gonna be honest with you, those boards are trash. The trucks on the first two look made of plastic and I didn't even waste my time look at the third one. Longboarding is a hobby where you get what you pay for, if you pay next to nothing it probably is trash.

However, occasionally you'll get lucky with good sales. Rayne currently has a complete Demonseed with Rayne Wheels and Atlas trucks for $127 which is the best entry price for a longboard besides maybe a mini like a Landyachtz Dinghy

Hello,

My 8 year old is quite good with roller skates, but wanted to start longboarding. I was just about to place an order on amazon... but before doing that a quick google search (pointed to reddit) revealed that I should stay away from that store.

Is there a beginners longboard that you would recommend under $100?...

Are these considered garbage for amateurs?

u/TheIceRange · 2 pointsr/longboarding

Alright friends,
I bought a 8bit board off of amazon before I understood longboards better. I'm looking at getting a new longboard with my graduation money and wanted to know your opinion on what I should get. I want to get into sliding this summer because I have a sweet hill to practice on.

Should I just upgrade the parts on my old board (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011LOZ81Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XVfwxbG8WTJ9W) or should I get a new setup completely?

My budget probably would be 150-250. (Not sure yet because I haven't got my graduation money yet.)

u/losersalwayswin · 2 pointsr/NewSkaters

amazon does have good stuff, but you gotta know what you're looking for to be able to filter all the BS. Like It's way would be to much trouble to explain why you shouldn't by this board to someone online. (long story short, it's counterfeit)

It's just simpler to go to a skate shop or at least an online skate shop. If you do decide to go with Amazon for any reason, the best I can recommend is atleast get a board from an actual skate brand. The majority of stuff on there is garbage (or for kids and parents who don't know better/don't care)

u/regionalmanagement · 2 pointsr/longboarding

Ive had this board for about 15 months. For most of it i didnt use it because I live in Florida with no hills or many good places to do tricks but I picked it back up again and Im 10 times better now. I can do slides and Im starting to master other tricks. So Should I upgrade to a better board, or just get better trucks/wheels or should I keep the same board for longer?

Money isnt an issue per say but I don't long board that often so Id like to keep it under 210$

u/jjcuber · 1 pointr/longboarding

Thinking about picking up freestyle/dance longboarding as a hobbie but money is tight since I'm a teenager with no job yet. But I was wondering if there was a decent board in like the $70 range that I could try out and see if I like it and then I'd buy a quality board. What I found so far was this playshion board for $60 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07443VW75/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V78XCb4K80XFW) if I could get thoughts on this board or recommendations that would be nice thanks.

u/GGarcia411 · 2 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

TeamGee looks like your best option from amazon. Link Besides TeamGee and Boosted, all the other boards are basically Chinese rebrands that probably aren’t worth buying.

u/itsmesp24 · 2 pointsr/longboarding

Im a newbie and to be honest Im not interested in sliding or any tricks yet, I just want to ride fast and cruise around. Do you guys have any wheels to recommend? I was thinking Orangatang Inheats or 4Prez. I just want to accelerate fast with smooth comfortable ride. Here is my board if that helps guys - https://www.amazon.com/Volador-Freeride-Longboard-Through-Petunia/dp/B01MU91KTA/ref=lp_4985188011_1_2?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1500150973&sr=1-2&th=1

u/kingarthersixties · 1 pointr/skateboarding

Is this a good skateboard for a beginner that's never stood on a board before? It says it's good for beginners but wanted more opinions just to make sure. Thanks

u/DuctTape534 · 3 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

Specs:

  • 2x 6374 180kv motors

  • MBS all-terrain wheels

  • 2x pulley kit (36:13)

  • 2x motor mounts

  • Caliber II Trucks (I have wider Torqueboard 218 trucks coming so I can mount both motors inside)

  • Antispark switch

  • FSESC 200A

  • 2x 6s 6000mAh Lipos

  • Deck from a longboard I bought like 4 years ago

  • Both enclosures were 3d printed with ProtoPasta carbon fiber and TPU washers that vary in thickness to compensate for the contours of the board (my own design).

  • bearings

  • Dual charger

  • other various screws, nuts, wires, connectors, solder, etc

    Total Cost: Approx. $1200

    Additional notes:

  • This was my first time using this brand of carbon fiber filament and I have to say its insanely strong, knocking on the back of the case, which is only 5mm thick, feels like knocking on a brick wall, its nothing like any filament i've ever used before and prints surprisingly well but will destroy brass nozzles (which cost pennies anyways).

  • I've gotten it up to 26mph so far, with plenty of throttle left to go (I'd honestly say I didn't hit over 50% throttle). It's been about 2 years since I've rode my longboard, and I've only tried a friends boosted board once about a year ago, so I still need to build up to going fast. A more experienced rider got it up to 29mph and said he still had throttle to spare. So so far no one has been willing to top it off, I'll report back once I get some numbers. I will say that it accelerates faster than most if not all brand name boards.

  • Yes I am aware that I fucked up my rear motor, I have since fixed the issue... Whoops.
u/theYellowTangerine · -1 pointsr/longboarding

Right now Amazon has a lightning deal for a Rimable longboard.

The deck is basically the exact kind of deck that I'm looking for. I'm totally new to longboarding aside from trying out a friend's so this seems like a perfect starter board.

Is there something glaring that I'm missing, or is this actually a good deal for me? I understand I'll probably have to replace the parts over time, but since I'll just be using it for some casual commuting it seems good.

Thoughts? Anything I should keep in mind before buying the board?

How is this board for a beginner? I'm basically just looking for a board to cruise around with friends in a flat area. 5'9" 135 pounds. I welcome any other recommendations around that price range as well.

u/realadult · 0 pointsr/longboarding

Is this a good first board?

I've been doing a little bit of research so far and came across this longboard which seems promising and aesthetically pleasing. http://www.amazon.com/White-Warrior-Bamboo-Longboard-Skateboard/dp/B0141NGZ64?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A2NUV9C3MO3CNC
I am a beginner and am mainly just looking for something to get across campus easily, I'm not really looking to do tricks or go really fast. For more information I'm a 5'4" female about 110 lbs, do you think I would be able to maneuver this alright?

u/Wilktacular · 2 pointsr/longboarding

u/Neil_Smokethegrass_T · 2 pointsr/NewSkaters

I bought this board on amazon and it's been great for me. My one issue is that the wheels are suited more for park than for street.

But I get the appeal of building a board, I wish I would have done that.

Anyone own a Ten toes board? The black pipeline is selling at 31$, anyone know how these are? Reviews say the wheels arent great

Not sure if this is a mistake on amazons part but im pretty sure these were around 80 when i was looking a few months ago (31 now).

Looking for my first electric skateboard/longboard. Currently have a conventional longboard. Will mostly be riding on flat, but occasional hills will be encountered (nothing crazy). Looking for anyone who has experience with these two. Price points seem to be fair for what they are. I'm 140 lbs, most riding will be on sidewalk and street. Thoughts on these two? Thanks.
