Funnily I've been working towards something similar, at least as far as gaming and Lego goes. I'm assuming I'm about twice your age but whatever.

My room is smaller but if I could fit it in I would've been all over an Ikea Fredde Computer work station which looks perfect for both gaming and Lego. Luckily I managed to squeeze in a display cabinet for my Lego models, the one I went for was an Ikea Stockholm. It's a decent size, certainly wouldn't want it any smaller. It's also a fantastic colour because that yellow is a precise match for Lego yellow.

Speaking of colours, I went all out on the teal (more green than blue), it's my favourite colour and I find it most calming (I have a stressy job). I used Durex Lemon Punch, similar to your walls at the mo, for my window sill, shelves, skirting board etc as it's a great match again for that Lego yellow. I also painted my ceiling 1 coat of a middling blue. This was a bit of a pain in the arse but once you get up there it doesn't take long. This was partly because I wanted a blue roof and as I use a projector instead of a monitor I figured it'd help darken the room.

OKT A5 drawers should make for great Lego sorting but again I didn't have space to dedicate to it and like you opted for those larger plastic drawers.

Aside from the cabinet I'm really hoping I can squeeze in a coffee table with a glass top display to build a Lego city in, something like this.

Anyway, there's something to think about. If you want my critique, get rid of those curtains. They look rubbish and messy. Invest in some blackout blinds, I have some rather spiffy blinds with the world map on. I find curtains can stick out into the room too muchh and blinds are much more sleek and neat. Just make sure you can drill around the wall where the window frame is before investing. Installing them can be fiddly but fairly straightforward, assuming there aren't any pipes, wires or metal structural support within the walls.

If you like the idea of those curtains consider hanging a mandala on your wall or ceiling. Yeah they're a bit hippyish but I love mine.

Do you really throw balls into that ring above your laptop? If you must have it then put it above your bed instead.

Take the pics off your dresser mirror. It's a nice bit of furniture and mirrors really do help brighten a room. Also you could consider painting and varnishing your furniture. I found this more bother than it was worth but if you have a few days to do it and have your stuff boxed up while doing so then you might appreciate it.

All that stuff hanging on your door would be better hung on the wall behind the door. Aaand is that a fridge? Do you really need a fridge in your room? Anyway, if you could rejig your room to fit it by your dresser or somewhere consider leaving as much space as possible in the door entrance, this will add to the general ebb and flow of the room.

Your cable management is terrible and it really adds to the mess in the room. Consider how to hide cables when arranging furniture for maximum presentation. Either tape them behind furniture or hide them with a wall hanging.

Also, if you have room for it in your budget, brand new duvet covers and lampshades will go much further than you might think. That said, I opted to sleep in a hammock hung from the ceiling. I can unclip it when not in use and thus saves space, helps my back pain, insomnia etc etc. Admittedly it's not for everyone.

Anyway, I probably didn't answer your question, whatever it was, but I hope that gives you some ideas. Just be sure to measure your room dimensions and the size of your furniture. Jot it all down on a diagram so then at least you can feel like you now what you're doing.

Good luck.

Oi vey. It's like they're trying to make it soul-crushing.

I think the lighting may be the worst part, but it's so hard to choose. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY LIGHTS IN RANDOM PLACES?

God, this place is upsettingly terrible.

My advice: skip IKEA and other stores, and head straight to auction houses and/or craigslist. I have gotten amazing pieces for SO cheap. Seriously.

My last venture to my local auction house, I got a 50-year-old hand-woven Indian quilted/embroidered tapestry (looks kinda like this, but way better), that's about 10 x 10 feet, weighs 30 pounds, a 12 x 9, handwoven Persian rug from the 50s, and a 200-lb, hand-carved coffee table made from antique Morroccan doors, inlaid with brass details and richly carved.

The grand total for these 3 gems, which I will keep forever, was 600 dollars, including the AH cut. The table alone is worth 3 grand, and that's for a smaller, simpler version of the one I have.

I also picked up a gorgeous armchair in mint condition on Craigslist for 45 dollars, plus 20 for delivery to my 3rd-floor apartment.

You'll have to be patient, and dig around, but it's worth it.

You can totally find things that fit your style, as well. If I found things for my very particular, niche tastes, so can you! :)

Also, I highly recommend buying a handful of cheap tapestries on amazon. I used them in my old shitty apartment to really amp it up. They look great, are light, and easy to put up. I put one on all 4 of my walls (4 of the same) to create a "wallpaper), then draped an extra-large one over my ceiling to give it a tent-like feel, throwing in battery-operated yellow string lights for extra oomph. It was SUPER cozy, and cost my like 60 bucks total.

Here's a few examples. These ones are a bit bohemian, which isn't for everyone, but you can find all kinds of styles. They look better irl than in the pictures, most of the time. All of them are under 20 bucks. These will give your room depth, character, and hominess, and have the added bonus of covering those hideous studs.

Also, get rugs. And cheap artwork. And curtains. ASAP.

All can be found cheaply on Craigslist/Auctions/thrift stores even.

Hope this helps!

Yay house!! We're still renting, but we just moved into a mobile home from living in a tiny little townhouse in March. The space increase is like... whoa. It's a whole different world not sharing walls with anyone, so congratulations! Yaaaay assets!

So, I'm actually going to list a few a lot, because I love decorating and it gives me an excuse to play house AND randomly browse Amazon! I played a lot of Sims just for the decorating part as a kid.

Also I get to play around with that Amazon Scout style explorer thing now, yippie! These are not all things that I want or have, obviously, I'm just killing time on Amazon.

Wall hangings and artwork:

First of all, I'd do a little rearranging and put the couch opposite the fireplace, and the two chairs along the wall where the couch is now. Then put the tall lamp in the corner, and perhaps a tall plant if you can get one. That would make the couch the main focal point of the room when you walk in the door. Right now it's obtrusive because it's kind of right in the circulation.

Could you paint the coffee & side tables? One or two quarts of chalk paint or milk paint (you don't have to sand) will work wonders. I'd paint them either white, light gray, or even navy. That would really modernize those pieces.

With some accessories I think you could achieve a cool bohemian look. Switch out the lamp shades for both the lamps (if you can, it's hard to tell what the larger lamp is in the photo). Something like this or this. Take the current throw off the grey lounge chair, pick up a couple of colorful throws. Here's a good example of one but you can look at TJ Maxx, World Market, Pier 1 Imports, or antique/consignment shops in your area for something similar. Get at least 4 more throw pillows, also in different colors. Navy, orange, red, emerald, gold.. You want to mix and match colors, textures, and patterns to make it look curated but effortless. The above stores are great sources for those as well.

Put up some wall art, a macrame wall hanging with some color like this one would be perfect to tie everything together. Then some framed botanical prints as well. If you're on a super budget you can even print them at your local print shop. Audubon's Birds of America are un-copyrighted and you can download full resolution images for free. Then just pick a size to print them as, such as 11x17 or 18x24 that you can easily buy frames for. There are many other un-copyrighted botanicals/animal studies up for grabs. For the coffee table I'd get some cute coasters like these marble ones, and maybe a terrarium with some succulents or air plants.

I hear you on winter arriving, it was 31 degrees when I woke up this morning.

Windows- use window film. It's incredibly effective. Get insulated/thermal curtains, they're incredibly effective as well.

Get inspired by tapestries. They're a pretty, inexpensive way to add a little extra insulation to exterior walls. If you have any pretty quilts you can use those. If you don't then get something like this or one of those mandala design cotton sheet things, then hang a cheap/thick blanket next to the wall for insulation (fleece works well) and put the pretty thing on top so it looks nice.

Whenever possible, heat yourself and not the air around you- it will save you a ton of money. Set the heat at 60-62 so the pipes won't freeze, put on a sweater and fuzzy socks, wear a hat. Get an electric blanket for your bed and an electric throw for using on the couch, they're cheap to use and will keep you incredibly toasty. Electric throws are so so nice on a cold winter's evening!

Hey thanks for the reply! I appreciate it.

I was thinking of getting some black light posters (I may not, those may be too "hippie"ish for what I'm going for, I don't want my suitemates thinking I'm a stoner or anything) and maybe a black light.

I'm thinking about getting this tapestry and I'd also like this one, but I don't have too much money. So I have to pick my psychedelic things on a budget.

I'm not very good at art, but I would like to do some like abstract paints with a bunch of melting and mixing colors, I think that'd be neat.

This is a really cool blacklight poster, and it may be worth picking up a blacklight lightbulb.

Your minerals idea is really good, I hadn't thought about that. I was thinking of picking up some sand and like a cool jar and maybe make an inorganic terrarium, since pretty much every plant I had last year died, besides my cactus.

For the look your going for, alot of that is layering. Brightly colors scarves draped on the vanity. A group of three or five colored glass lanterns can hang from the ceiling at various lengths. There's alot of white tones, change that up where you can. Find a jewel tone you like, blue or green will work best I think. Toss some black and greys in the mix. Paint that vanity. That cozy feeling usually comes from STUFF. Fill up the wall space with small prints of the full moon, cat silhouettes, or flowers. Installs shelves, put a candle holder on one or old books or large crystals.

Here's a few more ideas:

  • A bed canopy?
  • fairy lights!
  • beaded curtain in front of closet
  • plants
  • glass containers
  • tiny hooks around your vanity to hang your necklaces or if you don't have jewelry like that, maybe hang your crystals
  • antique birdcage. Big one on a stand will make a great lamp or candle holder or crystal display or even scarf holder! Small one will look great on a shelf.

or you could honestly mount the tv higher on the wall, and that would make that entire table available. you could keep your xbox/ps and maybe some cool speakers on it like this

Yay! (:

And this is really cute, I like it a lot! Really good job! Maybe this tapestry would be a nice, cheap alternative that could tie it all together.

What kind of materials are your dressers made of? If wood, you can strip the paint/stain, sand and restain them to your liking!

u/NeedyBirdCreations · 1 pointr/houseplants

Although I'm sure the quality is better at society 6 they're too expensive imo... If you want more cost effective options there's some good ones on amazon. This tapestry and pillow look great together and I love this one monstera

Keep in mind that on the Canadian web site.. so prices on the US site will be lower even.

Just search leaf tapestry on any web site that sells stuff for homes... even wish has stuff :D

I've downloaded Electric Sheep which is a pretty damn good visualizer, and I've got this sweet ass tapestry with this sweet ass light, and when you put the light on the auto cycle through all the colors, it plays with the colors on the tapestry and it fucking morphs and it's ridiculous. then as for tunes I'll throw on some Boards of Canada, Starfucker, Grateful Dead or lately if I'm really trying to get weird I'll throw on some Gnod or Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel or some really old Floyd.

I'll also watch one of a few movies, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and for some odd reason, my friends and I have had a trip tradition of watching ninja assassin because it's visually nuts and there's not too much to keep up with story wise. I also watched some it's always sunny, which was pretty much the funniest thing that has ever happened to me at the time. I only got through one episode (Chardee MacDennis: The Game of Games) before I really felt the need to go for a walk.

I can't game very well, I tried playing halo 2 and all I did was walk around the first level and not shoot anyone. Geometry wars was pretty cool though.

But to be honest don't work on staying focused on anything, I just let the weird take me where it takes me

u/matches05 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

For your daughter 100% the tapestry. You know how cool her room would look? She'll love it and would be able to show it off :)

For yourself definitely this swimsuit cover dress. Summer is finally here and it's incredibly cute! I actually may add it to my own list :)

Amitabha Buddha tapestry....a bit pricy for me

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001QRTLOC/ref=pd_aw_sbs_3?pi=SL500_SY115&simLd=1

This is the one I have its cheap like 13$ and beautiful

(you can hang the tapestries up on your shrine)

Always check the SIZE of it to make sure its big.

Look up other Buddhist tapestries elsewhere....tapestries are usually over the top beautiful, even the cheap ones are eye poppingly amazing.

Would also recommend a fog machine, lava lamps, backlit/neon artwork. Oh and I did notice even with the laser and led strip on there wasn’t a whole lot of light on the tapestries so I’d say just for a bit more ambient lighting a Phillips hue would be a good investment. I’ve still got some stuff to do to tie it all together but it’s a good start lol
