He if he likes history, culture and math...maybe get him into Chinese Chess/gambling games for the novelty to invoke his curiosity?

Chinese Chess: An Introduction to China's Ancient Game of Strategy https://www.amazon.com/dp/080483508X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_E4Y-BbXYZNW9Z

Yellow Mountain Imports Chinese Chess Xiangqi Magnetic Travel Set, 9.5 Inches in Length https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002S8UQNI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_h7Y-BbS5T6TBD

Optimal Strategy for Pai Gow Poker https://www.amazon.com/dp/0935926178/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_m6Y-BbPA9GS40

He might not ever play but it might pique his intellectual curiosity. It would be a nice novice exploratory game together during the holidays. I’m sure he would be fond of the cultural newness of the game and might garner new game strategy insights.

Thanks! I have this one. Just got it, but the magnets feel strong and it folds down to a reasonable size. This will be the first trip with it. There is a smaller/lighter version from the same company, but this one makes it nice and easy to see piece placement.

u/tercerero · 8 pointsr/Parenting

My kid is only 4, so right now I'm just starting out by having maps up as wall art.

In the hallway, we have a city map where I've circled all her favorite places - school, parks, our house, Daddy's house, friends' houses, etc - then we also have a state map and circled off places we've been. In her room, she has a big world map that is laminated so we can draw on it.

Out and about I always stop at map posts in parks, and have her figure out where we are and where we want to go.

She really has no concept of perspective and thinks going across town is further than going across the globe :) I figure it's simply a good start to begin thinking about the bigger world.

When we drive around town I give her those car bingo games where you're on the lookout for certain things like fences, flagpoles, schools, etc. It makes her pay attention, and she's starting to notice where we are, where we've been, and that there's different ways to get places. I'm proud of her observational skills right now and she's also picking up on street signs and rules of driving.

Great! You're getting some good books. I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Do you have a setup for following along with chess books? Do you use a board, a travel set, your computer, a tablet, &c.? Following along with a game book is important to snap those patterns into your brain.

u/sleigh_of_hand · 1 pointr/boardgames

Another take, $400 on the nose via Amazon, although you'd probably get cheaper via Cardhaus or MiniatureMarket:

u/Brodogmillionaire1 · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Ok Play is a travel game that plays like freeform connect four and can play 2 to 4. It might be neat to make your own tiles and paint/embroider/decorate them however you like. Lots of artistic possibilities with such a blank slate.

u/ladyaccountant · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

"Old Posh Gentleman" - Travel chess board. Munchkin and I would whip that out with pinkies up (Under 15 wishlist)

"Phallic" - Nail polish bottles look like peens with bulbous heads... (nail polish wishlist)

"Geeky" - Harley Quinn comic book...I LOVE HERRRR (Book movie mp3 wishlist)

"Deserted island" - A good book is alwayd necessary...especially one about zombie love (book movie mp3 wishlist)

Thanks for the contest you crazy kids!!!

u/Azerohiro · 1 pointr/MrRobot

I live in a very small town lmao, I've only ever seen the cheapo flat cardboard chess sets that come in boxes or decorative chess sets that are borderline tacky. Took a little searching but I'm pretty sure I found the same exact set here on Amazon.

u/Reditor_in_Chief · 1 pointr/chess

I use this board with these pieces for table play and home practice, and I use this board for out-and-about games.

As for what I'd most like to own, I think I'd ultimately wish to have a large lifesize board in my yard someday, but they're a pretty penny.

u/Benjigga · 37 pointsr/AskReddit

Amazon has a ton of awesome stuff for kids for pretty cheap. Anybody who only has ~$5-$10 to give should take a look at this list and organize helping someone in need from this thread. All of these are eligible for Prime. I'm willing to help out with two gifts of anyone's choice. Shoot me a PM. (Yes, I stole these ideas directly from SD. I've taken out the affiliate links.)

u/HDRgument · 6 pointsr/chess

Back in the olden days we used to use something very much like this.

Most people just use smartphones nowadays, though. Not having to carry anything extra, and having a GM-level helper, is very nice.

u/GRIFTY_P · 5 pointsr/chess

btw you should totally grab one of these https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Checkbook-Magnetic-Travel-Set/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=sr_1_28?keywords=travel+chess+board+pocket&qid=1569519347&s=gateway&sr=8-28

or these https://www.amazon.com/WE-Games-Magnetic-Pocket-Travel/dp/B07KV8H7FS/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=travel+chess+board+pocket&qid=1569519395&s=gateway&sr=8-6

for just over ten bucks, this has been a super worthy investment for me. it lets you read those crazy complicated lines really simply just by following along real quick. also you can read and follow along in public without looking like a crazy person, it's much more subtle then a full size board. also, i mean, it fits easily in the front pouch of your backpack or your back pocket

u/YSO-shyguy · 3 pointsr/backpacking

I've got this and like it. Super light weight, very flat / easy to pack, and the magnets keep the pieces in place while being jostled around in a pocket or pack so you don't have to finish a game all at once. To boot, it's not expensive.

http://www.amazon.com/Checkbook-Magnetic-Travel-Chess-Set/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376325037&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=magnetic+check+book+chess+et

u/FUZxxl · 2 pointsr/shogi

This one perhaps?

Personally, I bought one of the Nintendo Shogi boards. They are pretty nice at a reasonable price.

u/dexygen · 1 pointr/chess

I heartily recommend this biggish one, the magnets are strong enough that the pieces stay in place when you hold the board upside down

u/bradleyb623 · 1 pointr/boardgames

[Road Trip Bingo!](http://www.Green.com/ Auto Backseat Bingo Pack of 4 Bingo Cards Great For Family Vactions Car Rides and Road Trips https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B004GVVYTA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ErroDbFX34JV6)

u/CupBeEmpty · 117 pointsr/AskAnAmerican

Yup. We’d road trip up to Canada every summer. There are a little set of roadside attractions we’d stop by pretty frequently.

We drove from Denver to Seattle one year and stopped at Yellowstone and the Tetons on the way.

We had lots of little road trips down to the Smokey Mountains.

We had a lot of little car games we played from eye spy to roadside bingo. These were enjoyed by the siblings. My mom would read to us a lot as well.

As an adult I have driven the Maine or Providence to Indianapolis route a ton of times for Christmas or Thanksgiving. We went from Providence to NYC many times and Providence to DC area a bunch. For most of those there are little places we like to stop but it is mostly just driving to get there.

u/draig · 23 pointsr/unitedkingdom

I highly suggest you invest in the British Counties edition of Mapominos. I never realised how ignorant of most counties I was until this fantastic game. It might seem incredibly sad, but it's a really fun way to learn counties and countries...Mapominos...

...

G-guys?

u/formed_of · 22 pointsr/AskReddit

I had a similar thing trying to take a pass the bomb game through security. They did not believe that a plastic cartoon bomb was not a threat and so confiscated it, despite me being able to show them that it was a plastic shell full of cards...

The year after my younger brother tried to bring scissors onto the plane. We now don't carry hand luggage so we can't make these mistakes.

Image of the game: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gibsons-Travel-Pass-the-Bomb/dp/B000FCM2F4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1341704293&sr=8-4

u/la_watson · 1 pointr/boardgames

Great List, we'll have to check some of them out.

Our absolute favorite <$20 travel games have been for a while:

  1. Star Realms
  2. Kamisado Pocket (amazon.com lists it as more expensive, but it's <$20 almost everywhere else)
  3. Hive Pocket
u/paulblarr · 1 pointr/AskReddit

If you speak french, Les Loups-Garous is a really nice game for large groups.

u/Carrollz · 1 pointr/boardgames

actually I think it's more like this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TTS9A8

u/Archae0pteryx · 2 pointsr/chess

You could try something like this: US Chess Checkbook Magnetic Travel Chess Set - by US Chess Federation https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OvAxybFRV17JW

u/lordthadeus · 1 pointr/chess

It seems like a magnetic travel set would be much cheaper and perform the same function of keeping the pawns and pieces in place:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019FATKG/ref=wms_ohs_product

u/purejosh · 1 pointr/chess

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G0S39K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6ruVBb7YBCKN8

If you're ever making a random amazon order here's the set on there. I think it's more expensive, but it does have the amazon convenience factor.

u/hoodieguy18 · 1 pointr/chess

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXGPNML/

This was my first board, I upgraded to a nicer wood one when I got more serious. Don't sweat it too much, 30$ is a decent price.

u/pimaniac · 1 pointr/boardgames

That is a neat board! On the low end, there's this.

u/dleskov · 2 pointsr/boardgames

It is available right in the publisher's Amazon store:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UXVA7OU?m=A3FLX8MAIVFP25

or even cheaper from Miniature Market (see my other comment in this thread).

u/ElectricalForm · 1 pointr/chess
u/Freddy_Bimmel · 1 pointr/chess

I have a really nice marble set that my wife bought me as a present, but the one that I use the most (and that travels well) is this one that's under $10. Fairly small and nothing fancy, but I like it.

Magnetic travel chess

Not the exact one but close enough
