I would recommend getting a bat box. Good for you, good for the bats! This guy makes custom ones for the wood in your area and is even available over the phone for help.
Thanks for your response and help! (and sorry for my delayed response!)
It appears my failure is that I mounted it on a tree. I have it facing direct sunlight but I guess it's still too shady? I live in Florida and while it can get chilly in
the winterJanuary, it's rarely that cold. Your links have definitely helped and I'm going to look into getting a wooden post or maybe I'll try to find a spot on the house if I can. There's this one wooden post sticking out from our fence (its connected to the fence) that I thought about but then I thought they might not like it because of other predators scurrying along the fence?I actually got the house here off of Amazon.

These are excellent!
Do you feel the 'scent' is necessary, or do they find the space without help?
You can buy bat houses that mount on the side of your house, under the gable. You could theoretically put that up right near the current opening, and hope they go in there. Assuming there are not too many ...
Here's an example.

Sure. They got it from Amazon and we ended up staining it as a mocha/espresso color so it would absorb more heat throughout the day. Now we’ve been letting it sit for about a month so the noxious stain fumes can dissipate. The company is called Audubon.

Huh, interesting. This thing? https://www.amazon.de/dp/B004YJTDWE/ref=asc_df_B004YJTDWE50785087/

This is probably the cheapest one you'll find. It's lacking a bit in clarity and build quality, but beyond this you're spending $150-200
Put a bat box on your property. Or in the preserve behind your house but, shh, don’t tell anybody.

You can find cheaper ones or just build your own.

I have an outdoor hot tub and I use an electric one. I leave it plugged in all season and have few problems. Alternatively and more interestingly you could try adding bat housing.

No I have no financial connection. You could always build one too.
