While I would agree that this would ideally be taken care of by management, I can also see that this might be hard for managers to enforce without wasting time watching people like a hawk. Rather than curtailing this behavior, users might just respond by getting sneakier, and that's still not great for security.

Honestly, with Win10, there is a decent technical solution for this that would make people less likely to try this kind of security nightmare of a workaround. You can control Windows Hello settings via GPO, and you could allow and set up fingerprint-based logins for specific users or computers in a specific security group. This would have to be configured individually on their local machines that they regularly use, but if it's a limited enough group, that's not a huge task.

You can buy Windows Hello compatible fingerprint readers, and, while not quite as secure, in theory, as password plus biometrics, biometrics alone are certainly better than having passwords basically written down next to the workstations, as they are now, /u/CaptJoeKPR.

I've actually purchased this and use it on my home computer: https://www.amazon.com/Kensington-VeriMark-Fingerprint-Black-K67977WW/dp/B01NAVWPOJ

-------------------------------

In addition, if the computers are joined to an Azure AD domain, rather than a local domain, there's now also the possibility of doing passwordless login using a security key, if you're OK with using the public preview of that feature.^[1]^[2]^[3]

Cheap USB fingerprint reader, ~$12. Has worked fine for me for the last year or so. I use it mainly to login to LastPass and Windows. Honestly my PC is pretty secure (apart from flat-out theft); I just feel awesome when I swipe my finger instead of typing in a password.

Or get the Perixx DX-2000 XXL mousepad. Big enough for your keyboard and mouse side by side

Thanks for the info! I’ll grab a pad (already got a stack of cards from ATF).

Do you think it’s worthwhile using a card holder like this if you are doing yourself? Identicator Fingerprint Cardholder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050AM5US/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WsiODbEPFW020

Would you suggest having someone assist rolling the prints? I’ve heard before that it comes out better if you are not pressing your own fingers on the card, but i assume with a few rest runs it’s easy enough solo?

>For a main computer we have an Apple MAC that we use for registering people into the gymnastics program. (Running whatever mac calls their 10.9.3 system.)

So I assume this is a newer Mac that runs OS X Mavericks?

  • The ideal option would be to use BootCamp and install Windows. However, that method would only allow you to use either Windows or OS X at one time (cannot run both at the same time).

  • Another option is to use a virtual machine program, one such is called Oracle VirtualBox (free). This would allow you to run Windows inside OS X, thus allowing you to run them both at the same time. However, you might run into compatibility/driver issues trying to connect your scanner into the virtual machine.

  • Now that I searched, it looks like there are biometric scanners that work with Macs.

    Here and here.

It sounds like your management isn't very smart. Trying to switch from ancient Windows 98 computers to new Macs...

Interesting idea, good luck with that

I have a fingerprint scanner on my laptop, and comparing it to a keycap, it's a bit wider, so you might have to cut away some of the surrounding material. Also, judging from the amazon results, most external fingerprint readers are wider than that because of the casing. Now obviously you'll remove the casing, but they're probably only that wide because the chips they house are that big, so keep that in mind

I did, however, come across this, which might be of interest to you in terms of size

u/FedsAgainstGunS · 1 pointr/sysadmin

WHY WOULD YOU GIVE ANYONE on the internet THIS IDEA

Best solution is to require more than 48 characters(or 2001, depending on how good your scanners are) or require unsupported symbols like the trademark or registered symbols, send a company wide email, explaining why the policy is in effect, or maybe have those users that have access to barcodes in a special OU, maybe switch everything out to code 39 linear, so that barcodes are longer and the scanner will have more errors, and can fit less data too(requring a shorter password than code 128). Worst case scenario is to expire their passwords every 5 minutes and making them call IT to reset it with a another temporary password.

On a more serious note have you looked into putting them in an OU that requires 2FA? It'll require setting up windows hello for bisiness, a pin, and a pre-synced bluetooth phone at each workstation(one phone for all workstations), alternatively, a fingerprint+PIN, i have a small USB stick with fingerprint reader just make sure it has windows Hello support(most of them as far as i can tell)

How can one do biometric verification by just having smartphone and a playsore app? Does it use fingerprint reader on the phone? (I dont think so).
If the plan is to use fingerprint scanners like [this](http://www.amazon.in/Morpho-MSO-1300-fingerprint-scanner/dp/B01M0O2RUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492144748&sr=8-1 tkeywords=usb+fingerprint+scanner) , it is definitely not becoming a hit as they cost anywhere between 2,5k upto 6k

I do bi-weekly payroll. I started with a table in excel with employee names and 14 days to enter the hours into.

If you want to get super fancy without it being super expensive get yourself one of these.
It's bare basic but works just fine for me.

This finger print reader works great and is inexpensive. Works with Windows Hello. I use it at work dozens of times per day.

You.

Buy an 'inkless pad' and (optional) card holder on Amazon, get free cards directly from the ATF, and do your own cards quickly and cheaply.

Getting those along with a Keypad/Fingerprint Doorknob on your closet will beat the price of a safe that size! That same brand makes deadbolts too that pair with that doorknob.

Please be so kind as to edit your Amazon URL to remove the referral links.

I'm not familiar with that brand, but you may want to search for fingerprint scanners that have Authentec or UPEK chips.

On my desktop PC, I have an APC USB fingerprint scanner that works well ( APC BIOPOD Biometric Password Manager (USB) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001V2N62/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_XVsDzbFE87HW3 ) but it's not compact like the one you linked. I believe the ones from Microsoft and Digital Persona are also Authentec based.

This one has been awesome for us. They have a deadbolt and non deadbolt option. But that fucker has been rock solid. You can use the key pad code, the app or the finger print reader on the side.

No, the fingerprint is stored on the computer, not the reader itself. If you're interested, this is the one I bought.

Maybe that's why the whole thing is MASSIVE.

In addition to being huge, I find it hideous...and the name is just stupid.

And it looks like it also already a thing.

I suspect a Odroid xu4 is in my future, but Pi 3s are on hand.

Any thoughts on these for regular Pi 3 opencv work? My goal is quadcopter navigation and avoidance.

This is what I found on Amazon.de

This one looks very similar to the one you linked.

I have bought scanners sold by these 2 companies

https://www.bioenabletech.com/

http://www.crossmatch.com/

I have seen JIO vendors use this one of these 2

www.amazon.in/Morpho-MSO-1300-E2-Activation/dp/B01MU29E8H/

www.amazon.in/Morpho-MSO-1300-fingerprint-scanner/dp/B01M0O2RUW

All these devices cost 3000-5000 Rs. They are for authentication - not for enrollment.

There’s this thing

fingerprint door handle

u/Doc308 · 1 pointr/Firearms

Here, let me google that for you... (haha sorry, not trying to be snarky, just couldn't resist) I came up with this and this

u/Ixliam · 3 pointsr/NFA

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HA4PJ4 is what I used. Add on for $6.98.
I did use the fingerprint card holder here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050AM5US which made a world of difference to keep it still and isolate each group.

> paying more for hardware that's from previous generation is frustrating

But less frustrating meaning reliability since its older tech and probably more mature.

> Although a Xeon sticker on a laptop is badass :D

And having a Quadro makes it 2X badd ass. With a 4K screen, one laptop to rule them all... :P

Seriously though, I would be leaning towards the 5520 if gaming isn't important. You could reduce the price difference with a 960 evo.

> fingerprint sensor

How important is it? Wonder if it could be added to the 5520 either externally through a usb device like this or 9560 parts...

Invest in one of these guys, make a 25 letter password, then just login with this thing

Supports Windows Hello. No way his parents can get in to fuck it up.
