East Coast Mid Atlantic region perspective

The first thing that comes to mind is flip flops. You could probably also find a slide sandal that's quite casual. Gladiators, leatherish, and most statement shoes wouldn't fit in as well where I'm from. It's not my thing, but sockless vans, keds, converse, etc are also fair game. Sanuks, Rainbows, Reefs, etc. have had their peaks and valleys for trendiness, but remain popular across age groups.

IME in a beach town, a lot of the look comes not from buying beach clothes, but from re-purposing clothing for the beach lifestyle. Old sweat pants and jeans become cut-offs. Brothers' outgrown sweatshirts get the necks cut off and a button down with a stain that won't come out is now a cover up. Of course, there are resort and surf brands that also contribute to the dominant fashions where I'm from. And non beach-influenced fashion lines that are popular tend to be more casual or familiar.

Locals wear a lot of tunics and dresses that can be worn at a casual bar/restaurant and the beach alike. But that's really closely tied to my particular beach culture, where you head off on your bike in the morning and you end up going from house to house and you never know if you'll be taking a real shower or where the day will bring you.

Visors are more popular than most would imagine, especially baseball cap styles and straw styles, but not the plastic-y kind. Sun hats borrow a good deal of inspiration from lifeguards, boaters, and fishers, and general beach goers, but I can't remember the last time I've seen an actual large floppy hat. [This] (https://www.amazon.com/Lanzom-Womens-Bowknot-Straw-Foldable/dp/B06XXXQXLN/ref=sr_1_14?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1523827177&sr=1-14&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=floppy+hat) would be a bit much where I'm from.

Swimwear is typically more surf-shop and less pool-side looking. In the 25+ crowd I see more classic one pieces and fewer monokinis. Two pieces tend to range from revealing to more full coverage, but included a lot of surf and floral prints, solid colors, classic patterns (dots and stripes). It's pretty common to have mismatched yet coordinated tops and bottoms. Bottoms are more likely to be solid than tops, since they may have to match both the top of the suit and a rash guard.

A good pair of white jeans or other simple, opaque, white pants screams beachy to me. And fits in with a Miami or New England look depended on how you dress it up or down.

And the most important feature of the beachwear I'm most familiar with is that you keep it for years. Sometimes decades. Not the most fashion forward, but it's also the norm. I think there is something about living in an area where the population and lifestyles fluctuate so much on the off and on seasons that it effects the way you experience seasons and the passing of time. I can't put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with how off-trend we can seem from the outside.

I was a big fan of Hawaiian print short sleeve button downs when I was a kid and they had a resurgence, and there are one or two I still wear, but I think Hawaiian print had more staying power on a bathing suit or dress. The drawback there is that dresses and bathing suits may be more expensive, and if you DO change your mind about them, you may not get as many wears out of them. Hibiscus prints are a little more common and less trendy, perhaps because they actually grow up and down the east coast.

I'm the same height and approximatly same weight, too.

  • What works: ASK 21, DG 1001 front and rear; Twin Astir, SZD 54 Perkoz front; Duo Discus rear; LS 4b
  • What I've flown (but shouldn't have because uncomfortable to the point that it may have impacted my ability to fly properly or illegal [weightwise]): Ka 6, K7,
  • What I couldn't even close the canpy in: ASK 13; Stemme S 10

I'tll be a bit inconvenient, as it takes a bit more than just hopping in to fly comfortably, but it can work. What makes it work for me is:

  • Right parachute, at our club we use both Thinback and Mertens, the Thinback ones fit way better
  • Shoes. Find a pair that actually allow you to use full rudder. With my Size 12 (46) feet that is not a given with just any shoe.
  • Cushions, forget about them. Not havig them is easier on your butt than having them is on your head / neck
  • No stuff in pockets (wallet, keys, etc.), I either leave it on the ground or collect it in a small bag that I can stow somewhere for cross countries (Don't take your car keys, though ;) )
  • Check flight controls before strapping in. You wouldn't want full up elevator to hit a biological stop, but you cannot afford to waste space, either, so find the right seating position
  • Your head will be very close to the canopy, so every hat with any sort of significant brim will not work. I have very light skin and tend to wear a wide brimmed hat on the ground and switch to the bucket hat (starting next season: with added bananas [thanks u/insomniac-55]) for flying

The best way to find out is take some time and experiment with what works for you and the glider you'll be flying.

    Good Luck!

Hats as a concept aren't the issue, I don't think - it's that the available styles are not typically suitable to me.

Some hats have looked decent in the past, but I'm really hoping there's something unique and interesting out there. I found a couple interesting things on Amazon:

Galaxy bucket hat:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LFSEDW2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2XHJ56UY1G3J

Interesting 5-panel hat:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DD21SY4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A6DRW77AL37L4

A hood with a face flap:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A7GNO5A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A6DRW77AL37L4

A baseball cap with an Indiana Jones theme / metal logo:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N2BEKXW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3BCCGAYLWSGBK

These are all just variations on common pre-existing hat varieties, but that's something I'm not opposed to depending on how ridiculous yet awesome something happens to be overall.

In short: No, shut up, I'll find a damn hat and I'll burn all of yours while you revel in the glory of whatever headpiece I have chosen, you dissenting defeatist scum.

u/Jadis4742 · 1 pointr/fringefashion

Oh lord, did your simple request send me down a crazy rabbit hole! So, needless to say, 'high tech' cyberpunk stuff does not include a lot of hats. Hoods, yes, hoods everywhere for the love of god. Helmets, yes. Masks, yes. Veils, occasionally. But not so much hats.

Now, for 'low life' cyberpunk, hats are easy. Beanies of any variety and military caps, occasional baseball caps (mainly for men) and wide, floppy hats (mainly for women). But not so much the 'high tech' side of things.

BUT there's a loophole! Since so much of the 'high tech' cyberpunk draws from film noir, I think you could get away with incorporating a cloche-like shape into your wardrobe. i really like the shape of this one here, but any cloche-like shape without flower accents that sits close to the head without a wide brim should work. I found this and this on Amazon.

EDIT: ooh, if you could find a sleek white cloche that would look fantastic.

I wouldn't say essentials as a whole but essentials to ME:

wag bandana

poop bags

wet wipes

kleenex

hand sanitizer

latex free gloves

basic first aid kit

water bottle with bowl attachment

treats of two types

head lamp for night/early morning walks walks

sunblock

second unlocked old phone to put my sim card into in case I break my usual phone

big ass wide brim hat: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXX7TLM/?coliid=I1LTF0OX1W9BTK&colid=24NFR5IYO6UFN&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I carry it all in one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HMLBNKJ/?coliid=I11LCZCWOK16AF&colid=24NFR5IYO6UFN&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I considered it a full time second job so I put maybe more effort into it than some people might want to, but I like to be very prepared in general and it's saved my ass countless times. I also carry a full change of clothes, including shoes, in my moped.

Found it. It looks like it’s gone down in price, too, since I got it. I think it was around $20? Anyway, it’s a good hat. Just make sure you iron or steam it when you get it cause it comes folded into quarters and the creases were pretty gnarly on mine for a bit.

u/seanomenon · 2 pointsr/onebag

I like bucket hats. They are a little less intense, and slightly more fashionable, than the fishing hat you link to. (In fact a lot of guys wear them all summer in my city.) They roll up to fit in a pocket and provide good sun protection.

u/nursesareawesome1 · 3 pointsr/AsianBeauty

The one I have is this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01C5GMLZI/ref=mp_s_a_1_11/140-4177056-9932304?ie=UTF8&qid=1505062612&sr=1-11&refinements=p_4%3ASIGGI&pi=SL140_CR0,0,140,180_QL70
In navy, it's really cute, the brim is kinda stiff and not really crushable but foldable and packable haha

u/jayliebs · 1 pointr/nerdfighters

Great Find! I also saw this one in the "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed" section: http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Ribbon-Accent-Cloche-Bucket/dp/B00845CC7W/ref=pd_sim_sbs_a_3

u/insomniac-55 · 3 pointsr/Gliding

For the canopy used in modern DG gliders, they claim that "The canopies do not totally screen out UV, but do absorb about 95% of it".

As for bucket hats, yeah they are dorky looking, but they are the best thing for the purpose. If you feel too weird wearing a plain old bucket hat, why not get a novelty hat? At least then it looks like you're self-aware of how goofy they look.

u/SirBentocus · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I've been thinking about getting a bucket hat. I like it, but I might have to worry about rocking it with confidence. Here are a couple links of ones that I've looked at: 1 2 3

u/groovyfinch · 4 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

The really big floppy ones always drape annoyingly in my face. This year I think I'm going to look for more of a mushroom shape (edit: or this). (Second edit: those are both small hats. I eventually had to get one from Target to fit my large American head.)

u/ediblesprysky · 2 pointsr/AsianBeauty

I haven't personally tried this, but based on one of the other recs in this thread, I found this ponytail-friendly hat that still has neck protection and about as much scalp protection as that hair opening could allow!

u/eperdu · 3 pointsr/AsianBeauty

Thus is what I’m eyeballing. I’d remove those ribbon things. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C5GMLZI/

u/vtjohnhurt · 1 pointr/flying

I wear one of these https://smile.amazon.com/Hat-Depot-Unisex-Cotton-Packable/dp/B014V0DUME/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=bucket+hat&qid=1571877909&sr=8-2 and on hot days, I dampen it with a little water (not sopping wet). If I'm wearing a headset, I turn up both sides.

u/YellowOrange · 7 pointsr/flying

There is a reason glider pilots are also members of the silly hat club. You've got that Halo headset so you too can pull off the bucket.

u/out_fit_in · 2 pointsr/streetwear

Can do.
