🎓 Reddit experts on bully stick dog treats
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where bully stick dog treats are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
(1) we have used all of the above. Standard collar holds tags the best, our training class provided a choke collar and we find it easiest for walks, and when he was still very small (8 weeks came home, so for about our first month or so) had him in the harness before we started training.
(2) we have all 3 - the retractable is new and I haven't used it yet, but we got it for beach trips so he can roam, then we started with a nylon and got a leather one from the class. We now use the leather mostly... just because its nice on the human paws :)
(3) We started with a 36" crate, at basically full grown he's fitting in pretty tightly, but still fits. We also ended up adding an ex-pen. If I was buying the crate now, I'd go up a size or two so he'd have some more space. I also highly recommend the pen if you have room.
(4) We've gone through a lot of beds... he's chewed them to bits... so might as well start off simple and cheap. He put a hole in the nice one we got recently within an hour.
(5) When he first came home, his favorites were the rope toys and unstuffed animals with squeekeres. Don't get things with stuffing!! They will try to eat it, and that makes for a lot of supervision needed. Now that he's a little older, he also loves balls, particularly [with teeth]

& [brain activity] (https://smile.amazon.com/OurPets-Treat-Ball-Interactive-Dispensing/dp/B003ARUKTG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1493386356&sr=8-3&keywords=treat+ball+for+dog)
(6) Foods:
(7) We did a local class. For socializing, we've made sure to introduce him to people from day one - and dogs since he was fully vaxxed unless we know the dog.
(8) Biggest challenge - he has chewed up window sills, door frames, etc when home alone. We originally thought it was OK to leave him in an empty room with just his toys etc bc we had an empty bedroom. He ruined the listed items of the room. Hence, adding the ex-pen. Happiest moments - it's like when people talk about their partners and babies... its the little moments, like when they snuggle up which you don't expect because its rare for the breed, or when they accomplish something - like being house broken, or a command (sit, etc).
(9) we're lucky... he loves both dogs and people. Archer is an attention whore, and the more praise and play the better. This can vary by individual dog, like individual human.
(10) The only thing I wish I could change is how long my commute it, and how late I get in. My husband is able to spend more time with the puppy than me which is just my own jealousy. Also... we use a dog walker 1-2 times a day (we're moving down to 1 now that he holds his bladder/bowels longer). The mid-day visit is SO important, if you can't take lunch at home... you need to have him with someone - a dog walker, a pet daycare. He cannot be alone for that long.
Also... know he's a smart breed. He's not like a lab or a collie who will live to please you. You live to serve him (or her! I have a boy, so I keep using him) which means that you have to learn about his idiosyncracies. Because he is smart, but easily bored... you will need to figure out what kind of attention and stimulation keeps your shibe baby happy. Is it mental stimulation and logic puzzles? They make more than the tops I shared... so start looking. Also, just play hide and seek. Does his hunter instinct kick in? Sometimes, when he's feeling extra frisky instead of feeding him in a bowl, I'll toss his kibble and treats into the toy, or literally around the room so he can "hunt" for dinner. Is he feeling neglected? Bored? he's going to cause trouble...so how can you make sure he knows you love him. Think of him like April Ludgate in Parks & Rec, or a cat. He wants to know he can have your attention when he wants it - but he will not just snuggle because you want to... or pay attention to you if it doesn't meet his interests or needs. You'll fall in love (hopefully) and won't care, but the shiba will rule the fam not vice versa so get ready for it.
Some ideas that have worked well for me/others:
Aging Parents - Kind of expensive (fluctuates a ton) but if you have a parent with a ton of photos who talks about scanning them all in someday, this scanner is fantastic. I have the older version and it's literally so easy to use that even my mom and dad could figure it out when I let them borrow it. Not a great bulk doc scanner but exactly what you need for photos. Pair with a case like this to store the originals in and you've done a great deed.
Newlyweds- If they don't have specific interests, a picnic blanket goes over well. I have the one linked and it's nice for the cheap price. Pair with some wine, maybe some other picnic accessories. I'm also giving a minted gift for a custom designed print for wedding photos to my brother/new sister-in-law.
Teens- Move beyond the selfie stick - some phone lenses go a long way, get a self timer for the phone, or a PowerCore. The powercore isn't sexy but super loved by all. I usually hit up BaubleBar or Sephora for deals too.
Handyman- I shoved this cheap light in my husband's stocking last year and he loves it. It's super handy.
Homebody- This is out of stock in the best size right now but it always comes back in. It is the softest blanket ever, doesn't shed, and we bought them for every room of the house.
Dog- What dog doesn't love bully sticks? A good deal, really good quality and my dogs have loved them.
On my wishlist- A milk frother, The Food Lab cookbook, a magnetic pincushion, maybe some Ugg slippers, a bunch of Etsy art and Essie gel couture nail polish. Debating a special purchase for myself with a bonus I received, I'm thinking a camera for a big trip coming up if I can find the right holiday deal.
I love Kong brand. Kong has toys that are really tough to chew through, not to mention the original Kong you can stuff treats into is pretty much indestructible. My puppy had an abscessed tooth and she couldn't chew anything for a few weeks so Kongs saved our sanity, not to mention this licky mat. You can smear peanut butter on it, soft dog food, spray cheese etc. It was a lifesaver. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJWCJST/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j7WWDbZV9ASNZ
We got the Amazon basics crate and it works well. We also got an Amazon basics play pen that has worked wonders https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758CTVVR/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j3WWDbSB2W7AJ
I don't have a brand name, but make sure you get dog beds where the cover zips off for easy cleaning. I did not do that, and it has been interesting trying to potty train with a bed you can't easily clean.
I got a pack of bully sticks on Amazon recently that have been wonderful. Bully sticks are a lifesaver when you just need your pup to sit down and stop bugging you for 15 mins so you can fold a load of laundry. Bully sticks are very expressive so these were a good deal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M93Q3CP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_B-WWDb43SZH8P
I also recommend a martingale collar. My puppy was terrified of going outside when we first got her so she would pull out of her collar and run away. If was stressful. Martingale collars tighten as the dog pulls so they can't pull out of them
I hesitate to recommend a camera, because after the second week of using it, it was really more trouble than it was worth. Yeah, you can check on your puppy while you're at work, but if he's crying or whining you can't do anything about it but feel upset.. If you're interested, we used Wyze cams. You can get them on Amazon, they are super cheap and easy to use. I just recommend using them for the first few weeks only, otherwise your work will suffer like mine did.
Edit: I almost forgot to mention Nature's Miracle, the patron saint of carpet and floors! It eliminates the enzymes in urine so your dog doesn't keep peeing in a particular place in your house because it smells like pee. Buy stock in this company. It is that important.
Good luck!
Just as a note - nylon bones really aren't great for dogs. They are nylon that has been flavored. I'd rather see a dog eat rawhide than ingest literal nylon (but both can cause issues like blockages). This video is a bit silly, but sums up my general sentiment.
Try bully sticks, trachea (you can stuff and freeze them with wet food), Kongs, and gentle training. Keep him on lead when he is out of his crate and take this opportunity to reinforce calmness and relaxed behaviors.
Our vet allowed short, gentle walks, so we would go on short walks around the yard during potty breaks and did a lot of calmness and gentle training.
So my puppy (6 months) developed separation anxiety, mostly because I work from home and was horrible about leaving her alone in the beginning. The earliest our vet would prescribe medicine was 6 months and we needed to work with a trainer before she would prescribe anything. That said, she's been on medicine for a week and is showing huge improvements.
Since your pup is so young, here are a couple things you can try:
Have you tried giving her a stuffed kong/busy toy to occupy her in the crate? I've stuffed them with everything from peanut butter (only use a little bit), to pumpkin and appple sauce. You can also freeze it to make removal harder/take longer
How are you crate training? Start with 5 minutes and move up from there. Use high value treats in there - hot dogs, cheese, lunch meat, etc. We were in a weird spot with our pup, she loved her crate, but hated me leaving. We used high value treats that only came out during crate training to get her to like it.
Bully sticks. They keep her so busy. Buy ones that are from American cattle and processed in America. We like these.
Make sure the crate is covered and try playing some tv or npr when she is in there. Human voices seem to help our lady, probably because it sounds like us.
*Also, at 10 weeks make sure she's actually mad at being in there and not just asking to go potty. At that age she can probably only really hold it for 2, maybe 3 hours, during the day and probably doesn't want to pee where she sleeps.
Hope this helps! Good luck and stay patient!
I just got both of my cats to stop chewing up the house! I was waking up every day to 3-6 piles of cat barf with plastic/ribbon/unidentifiable object in them, and I got fed up. Their thing was (mostly) plastic, not cords, so I can't guarantee this'll work for you, but it's worth a shot.
I completely switched over to feeding them in one of these kibble balls. They get all their kibble in the ball now; I put in 1/4 cup twice a day (for two cats). I also feed them wet food once a day.
The other thing I did seemed really obvious after I'd thought of it - I bought chew toys. My cats love them. Their favorites are turkey tendon and cod skin, but beef esophagus is also popular. The only tricky part is securing the treats so they can chew on them - I wedge the cod skin in the corner of one of their scratching boxes and staple the beef esophagus to the side. The turkey tendon is light and flexible enough that they can hold it down with one paw while they chew!
I seriously can't believe how much of a difference this made. My house went from a cat puke minefield to a livable space. My stuff isn't getting chewed to pieces any more. My fat cat is actually exercising instead of begging me for food all day! I really hope it works for you too.
>He has gotten the cold shoulder for a week now
One more thing - negative reinforcement doesn't work with cats, and he definitely won't remember bad behavior from a week ago. Side note, this website mentions bitter apple spray, which you may want to try applying to your cords!
I know you're sarcastic, but I think this is the full size bully stick... Great fun giving one of those to a small dog and watching it try to drag and eat a treat 4x its length.
My basenji has shown exactly zero interest in deer antlers, kongs, and nylabones. Per some advice on /r/dogs, I get him Bully Sticks. They don't smell very good, but as long as you pretend to not know what they really are they are a good treat for the dogs. Unlike rawhide they are completely digestible, and since mine isn't a big a chewer I don't have to worry about him eating too many.
Fruit is a good idea if your dog isn't sugar-sensitive. Apple chunks, banana slices (fresh or dehydrated), mandarin orange slices, blueberries, and melons are all good choices.
If you want something store-bought, I've never met a dog that didn't go bonkers for dried fish skins. They're crunchy, low-cal, and you can break them up into whatever size treat you need. I've no idea why they're so pricey on Amazon; I get this exact brand at my local doggy bakery for $8 per container.
There are a LOT of dogs who get blockages, honestly any rawhide she swallows is dangerous. You can get some bully sticks on Amazon that are a good price (they can get expensive, but so will a vet bill for surgery). They take just as long for a dog to chew and will definitely occupy a puppy. My 80lb Golden takes a good 10-15 minutes on this size.

I'm fairly certain I bought my marimo here: https://www.amazon.com/Marimo-Family-Pack-Diameter-Aquatic/dp/B01MXUYEYV/ref=pd_sbs_199_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01MXUYEYV&pd_rd_r=6RE2DEFE5XB5YZPQ8XNY&pd_rd_w=ar2k2&pd_rd_wg=K0p51&psc=1&refRID=6RE2DEFE5XB5YZPQ8XNY
Take a look if you're interested in purchasing some! :)
I have a 2 year old golden. When she's "bored" at home, I give her a bully stick to chew on. They help and keep her entertained for a little while.
Have you also tried to teach them to play with each other? I know it sounds obvious, but sometimes dogs that grow up with each other kind of stop playing with each other because they're no longer "new". Get long rope toys and create a game between all three of you until they learn to really start engaging each other themselves.
We also play the "treat" game where we hide small training treats around the house while they're in another room. It forces them to use their nose and they enjoy it so much when they find the treats.
Hey there,
From the picture you featured I would say that that looks like normal wear and tear for a nylabone. I gave my dog a bone like that when he was a puppy and haven't had any problems. If you're mainly concerned though about the disclaimers on the nylabone packaging that says it shouldn't be eaten, you could try bully sticks like these ones on Amazon. They're 100% digestible. If you're worried about them being too hard for your puppy there are some teething sticks specifically made for puppies like these ones on Amazon that are also completely digestible. Similar to the nylabone, you just have to watch your puppy and make sure they aren't swallowing big pieces to avoid a potential intestinal blockage
Thick washed cotton rope, the thiccer the better.
Bully sticks or antler are the best thing to chew. Rawhide isn't digestible, but both the bully sticks and antler are. They prevent nasty, paint peeling rawhide farts too.
Some butcher shops also offer smoked femoral heads that have meat, marrow and cartilage on them that make really good treats. The bone is heavy enough that can't chip it and the rest is digestible.

if you're an anti Amazon person, pardon the links, but they give you an idea what to look for. I use Smile because they donate money to the charter school my kids attend.
Just make sure that anything you're buying comes from a nation that enforces food standards for dog toys and chewies. U.S., EU, Brazil, and India are the big ones that pop up in my mind. Avoid anything Chinese like the plague. Stuff is frequently toxic or carrying pathogens.
Like others have said, they're real hands-y and will need toys they can manipulate. They're one of the only dogs I know who will go inside blanket forts you build for them. They're real sensitive to your emotional state so try not to lose your cool with them, and try not to let them walk all over you.
I had one with a flat snoot like the one in the pic and he was real quick to overheat and I had to carry him on the second half of some walks, and he snored loud AF, but otherwise I didn't have to take any extra care of his eyes. I did get to stick my nose in his nose nook when snuggling, but otherwise, his head held his eyes just fine and he was really expressive. Them bosty boys got wide noggins.
My girlfriend says you're gonna need bully sticks of the odor-free variety because they're aggressive chewers. Real artists. I've watched my girl meticulously gnaw the ears off of stuffed animals (straight cuts at the base of the ear) and then chew small incisions into the main body so they could extract the squeaker. Bully sticks will keep them busy and you can watch them hold it in their paws and nom it like a Popsicle.
i only buy 12" sticks so they last longer. these are the best quality i've found so far.
Hm, looks like I was confused and it's just antler with rope (another example here)
BUT you can buy one of those circular bully sticks and tie another rope toy to it, maybe? Let him get started with it first perhaps if he is feeling really anxious.
Good luck!
Currently I've got the top customer review for the 2lb bag of Best Bully Stick "Bully Stick Bites". My first and last experience with them is that the sticks are a rip off. Most of my pieces were hollow, so they hardly last like you'd expect them to. I provided plenty of pictures. Other people have noted the same thing from Best Bully Stick. Not sure if they are lacking quality control or are influencing reviews. They have, in the past, allowed free samples for "honest reviews".
No prob! Here's a 25 pack of dehydrated bull penis.
Have at it, champ!
We order these ones in bulk https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KEWU6M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Still lasts a decent time and $1.4 a stick instead of 9.
Also found these ones, which takes the 9 inch braided to $5 a piece

BTW bully sticks can be frozen which helps a ton on the smell and keeps them fresh
Hmm maybe I'll have to give Digesteeze a try. We're always looking for new things to let her chew on!
Also, we have been using these bully sticks that I found on Amazon. They're a little pricey, but they last a while (depending on how often you give them to your pup).
I really like these. They don't last super long, but a bag generally lasts a month between the two dogs that I give them to. ~1 per day.
Indeed. But they're high in protein!
