i vote cardboard.

I am pretty tall and found tacking it way up on the wall on a piece of cardboard let me aim it down slightly and get pretty good arm length coverage in the camera's view. Adjustable a few ways that was as well. There are a few post up right now about various ways to hook it to the wall that are somewhat in jest but can give you a few ideas about how to wall fix it.

If i were to do it again I would get the extendable tubes that have a camera mount on them rather than the 2 tripods I got for the vive rig's base stations. The tripods transmit and enhance vibration to the point to where I had to put in shock pads at their bases. I got a pair of the fovitec tripods. Great, but at the height I have them they really pick up floor vibration without the pads. If that's not a potential issue for you, they were nice for the price.

Something like this is what I would do if I did it over:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001BWT2PA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
much smaller footprint this way too!
down towards the middle of the page you can see a couple mount types that would fit it as well

Luck,
nex

Yes, it comes with controllers.

I found some over-ear headphones were uncomfortable because of the headstrap for some people, but the majority of people I've demoed for have had no problems. On-ear headphones may be a better option, and if its just for you the supplied ear buds are actually surprisingly good.

Depending on your room and whether you are happy to screw the lighthouse sensors to the wall you may need some sort of mount.

I was happy to screw the sensor mounts to the wall at home but I picked up

A couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wolfcraft-4042000-80mm-Telescopic-Support/dp/B001BWT2PA/ref=sr_1_2

and a couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MyArmor-Universial-Threaded-Microphone-Motorcycles/dp/B01A6KJDFG/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2

So I could bring the Vive places with me and demo (without having to screw anything to the wall).

Alternatively if you want to attach the sensors to a bookshelf or similar these are great:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phot-R-Studio-Multi-Function-Reflector-Cameras/dp/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_3

I also ended up getting a 3m HMDI extention and a 3m USB extension because my play area is a few meters from my PC and out of the box you only get 1m cables to the breakout box.

Ok, from what I can see in the photos, you've got a space that has very clean geometric lines; without more traditional trim wood and proportions, trad fabrics and furnishings are always going to feel mismatched. The rectangular window won't take a drapery without making everything seem stumpy and disconnected.

Stay with me, I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the space seems to be just the right thing for a sort of 70s supergraphic--if you embrace the weirdness and do some sort of graduated striping along that wall, it could be fantastic. Not right up against the corner, but something that would then overlap onto the window void, continuing up the wall and interacting with that porthole? Then get a custom roller shade on the window that continues the stripe.

Here's links to the general idea, these examples are a bit out there--

There's absolutely zero chance you'll be able to repair that fan blade effectively.

Fortunately, there's also zero chance the fan costs $2500 - I'm assuming that's from a price list published by your landlord, and it probably includes labor plus a punitive markup. At the absolute upper limit, it might be a $350 fan, and it's more likely in the $150-200 ballpark. It looks a bit like a Monte Carlo Discus. If you can find an identical fan, or a super similar one, you might be able to DIY the replacement or hire an electrician for way less than the landlord charges.

But, even that might not be necessary. Fan blades are modular and installed when the fan is unboxed, so they don't have to ship and shelve an enormous box to accommodate them. See if you can find a model number somewhere, and there's a very good chance you can find spare parts from the manufacturer for a couple bucks.

u/Piratesfan02 · 1 pointr/homeowners

Yup. One of these.

Do you have access above the ceiling? You’ll want to get a good ceiling fan support, this one is rated for closed ceiling access.

Make sure your support can support the weight of your fan. It’s not difficult to do. Good luck!

u/eddimondson · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I'm currently looking into a solution for this exact thing. I personally like going the more DIY route so I've bought some Energenie TRVs and a raspberry pi module that allows me to communicate with it using a raspberry pi.

I've not had a chance to tinker with any of it yet, but my plan is to hook it all up with MQTT and build all the automations in nodered and control it in my home assistant.

Regarding the boiler, you can automate that pretty easily with just a couple of simple WiFi relays. I used the sonoff dual R2 with custom firmware. Basically you hook into the wires feeding your existing programmer, one relay to the hot water and the other relay to heating, supply it with live and neutral and then it's done. This page helped me a lot with figuring out how it should work.

That's the (or atleast 1) DIY route, I'm sure there are consumer products out there that do it all out the box, but I couldn't find any at reasonable price and with flexibility to run it locally or with my own firmware.

u/EL_LUKEO · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I've added a new fan/light combo (no fixture there previously) as well as added a new switch to an existing fan/light that ran off of one switch. Both places I used a GE 12724 Smart Dimmer for the lights and a GE 1273 3-Speed Fan Control for the fan. It works great in my opinion, you can manually turn the fan and/or lights on/off or I can use my phone (connected to my Rpi3 DIY hub running homeassistant).

Here's what you'll have to do, it's a little bit of work but if you're handy it's not a very difficult job. If you have access to the fixture from the attic this will be 100% easier.

Assuming that there is a single 14/2 Romex wire from your current switch to the light you'll either have to:

  • pull another 14/2 Romex wire from the switch receptacle to the light fixture

  • replace the current wiring with a single 14/3 Romex wire

  • replace the current ceiling enclosure with an old-work fan-rated box assuming the box isn't ceiling fan-rated

  • assuming that the switch is in a single-gang enclosure replace the switch enclosure an old-work 2-gang enclosure

  • wire the fan and switches with the new 14/3 Romex or the dual 14/2 Romex wiring

Well in that case if you're going to buy tripods anyway, maybe just start with those and see how well they work for you?

I have these poles:

https://www.amazon.de/Wolfcraft-4042000-Deckenstütze-max-belastbar/dp/B001BWT2PA

And these to attach the lighthouses to the poles:

https://www.amazon.de/Kamera-Halterung-Motorrad-Fahrrad-Fotogewinde-Schnellspanner/dp/B00E5M39AW

Tbh. I think they work perfectly fine for me, but I am sure you will be able to find something better. I just bought those because they were cheap and could be delivered quickly and they didn't have horrible reviews ;)

u/amusedparrot · 2 pointsr/homeassistant

I have energenie TRVs, they are battery powered I have seen some custom solutions that use wired power; normally this takes the form of an underfloor heating actuator replacing the top of a normal manual TRV. You would have to ensure you find an actuator with the right diameter to screw onto the valve and the right depth of piston stroke to ensure that it can impact the valve correctly.

The energenie TRVs also only replace the manual top of the TRV valve so if your radiators do not have TRVs or the valves are stuck then on top of the cost of the "smart TRVs" you would need the actual working TRV valves too.

To control the TRVs I use gpbenton's code on a raspberry pi zero with the energenie two way pi mote to communicate with the TRVs via RF. This means that is just a case of sending messages via MQTT which is picked up by the pi and communicated to the valves to turn off / on a radiator and the other data (valve state, temperature etc) gets reported back by MQTT too.

I have found it pretty reliable, sometimes there is a missed message and one thing of note is that the valves only accept messages during their reporting window, so you have to wait for a valve to send a message to be able to update it.

Keep the ceiling fans. Just replace them with nicer, less dated ones. Could not live without good air circulation. We put these in our house:

u/lWerdnal · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I used the supports and clamps . Look to be a bit cheaper than the ones above and they work perfectly. Great as a portable option too.

> What have you found to be the best way to mount your sesors.

The Vive comes with wall mounts for the lighthouses - you can just screw them to the walls.

However, as I mentioned in my other post in this thread, I have to move my kit between a couple of rooms, so I opted for 2 of these along with 2 of these. The poles are quick to release and re-position, and take up minimal floor space. So far I'm happy with the choice, even if it does make the room look ever so slightly like a building site!

u/Siltuz · 3 pointsr/Vive

I have had success previously using the below, over a year with no issues. I did however add velcro to the top as they did not work so well with sloped ceilings before, but they worked perfectly with flat ceilings.

On phone so apologies for horrible formatting of the links. I bought this stand
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001BWT2PA/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Along with this bracket
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01A6KJDFG/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's not completely ideal as I'm effectively using the stands upside-down as the extension bit is to thin for the bracket to fit around. The brackets themselves are also a little flimsy but seem to hold fine. Means you can get the recommended setup angle and have them completely up in the corner of rooms maximising your vertical height and minimising chance of occlusion.
For me it works well as I didn't want to drill holes in the walls and I wanted a quick method of moving it around for demoing to people.

u/andythetwig · 0 pointsr/Vive

I bought two of these because they are a bit more solid than the ones I saw at B&Q. The problem isn't that they will fall down because of the weight, but tiny vibrations which are exaggerated when the lighthouses are mounted on brackets.

I also bought these brackets, but they are a bit fiddly and there are simpler ones - there are some designed for mounting gopros onto bikes that look pretty good.

Good solution for mounting the lighthouse? by madcolster

I found these two things on the Amazons just now. I think they will solve my problem of mounting them in a rather small room. I didn't want to use tripods as they wouldn't fit conveniently anywhere. Have any of you used this as a solution and, more importantly, does it work?

Appreciate any help here.

(FYI, I did pre-order a Rift, but I gave up after the immensely disasterous release....)

Not games but, I bought some contractor poles to mount the lighthouses. I make better use of my available space due to better and more reliable coverage than just putting the lighthouses on shelves and stuff. I didn't have to drill holes or damage anything to put them up. My setup is portable if I want to move it elsewhere.

I picked these, but there's lots of other options such as tripods, etc.

Well, I'm sure there are more factors at play, but here is an example of a similar setup that offers 4,450-CFM airflow and here is an example of a regular ceiling fan with similar length with an airflow of 4,890 cfm.

So I was wrong, but it is pretty close.

u/AviateX14 · 3 pointsr/Vive

I'd suggest getting some ceiling supports instead and a camera clamp, they take up far less space. I got two of these supports and two of these mounts. They take up about as much floor space as your phone would, and they're very very stable. Plus they only take a minute to set up.

u/MrMallow · 1 pointr/mildlyinteresting

I mean, for a quality fan that is that complicated and intricate (that I would want to last) that is a totally reasonable price to pay.

EDIT:amazon listing for anyone interested. CTRL + F where to buy

u/DemmyDemon · 5 pointsr/Vive

Here is what I use:
I have two telescopic supports braced between floor and ceiling.
On those, I have one pipe clamp on each.

Works absolutely perfectly, and takes up a whole lot less floor space than a tripod would.

u/babyelephants2 · 11 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Upgrading older light fixtures/fans. It doesn't take much time to switch a chandelier out and a newer one can really change the setting. May not be a cheap upgrade though. Also - we updated our older mismatched ceiling fans with nice clean white ones and now they nicely blend in with the ceiling instead of sticking out in an ugly way: https://www.amazon.com/Minka-Aire-F518L-WH-Concept-Ceiling-Control/dp/B06ZXYW2YN/ref=pd_sim_60_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06ZXYW2YN&pd_rd_r=f0c6b35d-f271-11e8-b007-a7b99bbf58ac&pd_rd_w=SSrQd&pd_rd_wg=pqhRs&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=DPZ25G4XXWHSKBTM53E5&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=DPZ25G4XXWHSKBTM53E5

You would need a smart ceiling fan that is always powered. Here's one, but I don't know anything about it. Hunter Indoor Wifi Ceiling Fan with LED Light and remote control - Romulus 54 inch, Nobel Bronze, 59479 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SK4F6GB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MaHTDb4HKA47S

If you wanted it to run off of a wall switch, you'd have to control it through automation, not direct wiring. It might be cheaper to run another wire or two.

u/distantreplay · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

There are "saddle" support boxes and "side saddle" support boxes intended for your application. Here is an example:

Here, this is a Ceiling fan from Amazon, your shlong might have a harder time getting stuck on this one, it's reviews are very positive. Should your penis still run into aforementioned problems you may want to contact Brazzers for a possible job opportunity!

u/1deadeye1 · 13 pointsr/gifs

Hey, that's a Gyro fan. For those posting saying you want one, you probably don't because they are like $700. They're also mostly for show and don't move nearly as much air as most regular ceilings fans do.

u/eras · 1 pointr/Games

These are the shit, use much less space than tripods: https://www.amazon.com/Wolfcraft-4042000-Ceiling-Maximum-Capacity/dp/B001BWT2PA - at least if you don't have the ceiling very high. Also, mount them upside down and you need some adapter for mounting the actual lighthouses.

u/pookage · 1 pointr/Vive

Don't worry - you really may be overthinking it; at home I have both lighthouses on opposite sides of the same wall because I don't have any space on the opposing side - it works fine for anything other than when my body is blocking both sensors from the controllers.

When I'm doing a seated game I just rotate one to point at me and it works grand.

Just imagine them like eyes - as long as at least one can see what you're trying to track at any given moment in time; it'll work. The advice is to put them high so that they're less likely to have their line-of-sight blocked by something.

TL;DR - your setup will work fine.

---------------------

P.S - I use these floor-to ceiling poles with these clamps to mount the lighthouses onto

The walls are made of drywall, so not as strong as a shower. I wonder if a shorter version of this type of pole would work horizontally. This one has a minimum of over a metre in length, while the gap is only 87cm

u/daveyouremywifenow · 2 pointsr/Vive

Careful with lighting stands, the lighthouses have motors in them which can cause a wobble on lighting stands even more than on tripods. It's very slight, but very annoying when you notice it.

Tension rods, like this(with these), are sturdier and have a much smaller footprint too, so you can have a bigger playspace.
