Top Reddit comments about Children's Comics & Graphic Novels:

I second the Marvel Adventures line and Superman Adventures.

I'd also recommend:

  • The Batman Adventures - It ran from 1992-1995 and was the predecessor to the Gotham Adventures series you mentioned, and the companion title to Superman Adventures.
  • Bone - A ridiculously fun to read fantasy/adventure story published from 1991 to 2004. Great art, great humor, and it truly appeals to all ages. The colorized version is published in nine digest-sized volumes that are extremely easy to find and very affordable, especially if you buy them used. The original black-and-white version is also available in one volume, but from what I hear there is a lot of gutter loss due to its size and the pages are easy to tear since they are so thin.
  • Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil - Good little story from the creator of Bone. I'd especially recommend this for kids who like Superman since it features a similar character. From 2007.
  • Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Non-canon story about a young Thor. Not only a great kid's comic but one of the best Thor stories ever written. Beautiful artwork, great romance, fun adventures, and lots of appearances from other Marvel characters including Captain America and Iron Man. It ran from 2010-2011 and was sadly cancelled early. Available on Marvel Unlimited.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man - Not good for smaller children due to lots of dialogue and a moderate amount of violence and sexual content, but excellent for adolescents and teens. I'd recommend it up to issue #128. It's currently being reprinted in this "Ultimate Collection" format which is so far up to volume 6 at issue #71. It ran from 2000-2011 and all of it is available on Marvel Unlimited.

If you're open to older comics (Silver and Bronze Age), then many volumes from the Marvel Epic Collection line are also a good bet, but do a little research since some won't be very kid-friendly. They're fairly affordable reprints of classic stories that aim to reprint the entire history of Marvel's major characters from their inception to usually the mid-nineties (but they're not published in chronological order). They typically retail for around $35 for 400-500 pages of comics.

I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting, but I hope this helps!

Marvel put out some great comics under the "Marvel Adventures" label that are great for younger readers. My favorite is Marvel Adventures: Avengers. Another are the Power Pack books. All are collected in nice digest-sized collections perfect for kids.

From DC, the trade paperbacks of Tiny Titans are worth tracking down, and there's a collection of the terrific Batman: Lil' Gotham coming out soon. My nephew is a huge fan of the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon, so I've been getting him some collections of the related comic series as birthday gifts. I also got him a copy of the DC Super-Pets Encyclopedia, and it was so cool I ordered my own copy.

u/Peralton · 1 pointr/disney

Read The Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa. It is a collection of issues 0-12 of the series (issues 285-297 of the comic) The original paperback is $$$ since its out of print, but the hardcover is more affordable if you get it used. Going to a comic shop is the best bet. I expect they will have it on their shelf for cover price. Heck, you can probably buy the original issues for cover price.

In the original Carl Barks stories Scrooge would often make outrageous claims like the fact that he was a cattleman in Australia, a 49er in California or encouraged Teddy Roosevelt to take up politics. When Don Rosa took up the series and it turns out there is no bigger Carl Barks fan than him. He did a series of comics elaborating on all those fun tidbits and put together a quintessential history of Uncle Scrooge that is beyond enjoyable. It's a great read and gives you fabulous insight into McDuck's character.

I'll be keeping your family in my thoughts! Fingers crossed for you guys! Just Breathe.

My girls have quite a few favorite books. My oldest loves anything by Shel Silverstein and my youngest loves pretty much every book she reads, but I'd say her favorite ever was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They both also love the picture books that go with the Studio Ghibli films! :-)

I've been wanting to read The Secret World of Arietty with them! It looks so adorable.

Thanks for the contest!

u/apocalypsenowandthen · 7 pointsr/comicbookmovies
  • The Dark Knight draws heavily from The Long Halloween and plenty of the Joker's lines are taken straight out of a prose issue collected here. There's also the obvious influence of The Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs. The Killing Joke was also the primary influence on Tim Burton's Batman.

  • Batman Begins draws from a number of stories include Year One, Blind Justice and The Man Who Falls which is collected here.

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier was based on the fairly recent Ed Brubaker run which is phenomenal.

  • The Dark Knight Rises combines elements of Knightfall, No Man's Land and The Dark Knight Returns. The Dark Knight Returns is also a major influence on the upcoming Batman V Superman.

  • The Avengers mainly draws from the original first issue of The Avengers, which is collected here and retold again here in a modern setting, as well as The Ultimates. There are plenty of shots that feel like they were lifted right out of The Ultimates. On a side note, Joss also wrote the introduction to the book years ago and it was through doing this that he figured out exactly why the Avengers work.

  • The X-Men movies tend to draw more from the 80's, especially Chris Claremont's run. X-Men 2 draws heavily from Gods Loves, Man Kills. X-Men 3 is loosely based off of The Dark Phoenix Saga as well as Joss Whedon's relatively recent Astonishing X-Men. The Wolverine draws from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's [Wolverine mini-series] and Days of Future Past is based on, you guessed it, Day of Future Past. Even though X-Men: First Class takes it's name from the comic of the same name it has more in common with the early Stan Lee stuff. X-Men Origins: Wolverine draws from several comics include Wolverine's Origin mini-series and Weapon X. The first X-Men movie isn't really based off any particular arc although it did heavily influence Ultimate X-Men.

  • The upcoming Daredevil TV series seems to be drawing heavily from Frank Miller's run, particularly his origin story The Man Without Fear. While Miller's main run took place in the late 70's/early 80's The Man Without Fear came out in the 90's.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy takes its line-up from the 2004 series but the plot of the movie is all its own.

  • Avenger: Age of Ultron seems to be an original story that's taking it's cues, at least in part, from Ultron Unlimited which is collected here.

  • Man of Steel was heavily influenced by John Byrne's 80's reboot although its structure is heavily modelled on the 2010 graphic novel Earth One. There are also bits and pieces taken from Birthright, Secret Origin and All-Star Superman.

  • Iron Man 3 certainly takes its cues from Extremis but a lot of it is just pure Shane Black. The first Iron Man isn't based on a particular storyline but Tony's origin stuff in Afghanistan is almost identical to the flashbacks in Extremis that revamp Tony's origin for a modern context. Iron Man 2 borrows a little from Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars but ultimately does its own thing.

  • The writer of the Fantastical Four reboot has mentioned that they've been influenced by Ultimate Fantastic Four.

  • Ant-Man follows an original story but is primarily influenced by the Scott Lang Ant-Man books from the late 70's/early 80's.

  • The Thor movies aren't based on any particular storyline but they are vaguely influenced by Walter Simon's run as well as J. Michael Straczynski's run

  • Green Lantern draws heavily from Geoff John's run, especially his near-perfect origin story Secret Origin

  • AKA Jessica Jones is based on the incredible Alias.

8 Y/O/G I would go with Amulet. It's on book 4 right now and the protagonist is a girl with great magical powers that stem through her amulet. http://www.amazon.com/Stonekeeper-Amulet-Book-1/dp/0439846811/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1323786581&sr=1-1

6 Y/O/B If he's already in love with spider man I would just stick with that. Sider-Man has an all ages title called "Spider-Man Marvel Adventures" it's a few issues in but it probably won't matter to him and it's a monthly title so it'd be easier for you to get him "Hooked" and start expanding. http://marvelkids.marvel.com/

a series they would both like is "Salt Water Taffy" it's silly and fun about two boys on vacation at their cottage and meeting strange people and talking animals. It's fun and kids at my shop really like it.
http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Water-Taffy-Seaside-Adventures/dp/1932664947/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1323786741&sr=1-2

I'd love to have The Adventures of Superhero Girl by Faith Erin Hicks. She's such a fun writer/artist and I love her works. If you haven't read/seen her stuff you should totally check it out! Yay!

u/KeyFrameSamurai · 5 pointsr/Dinosaurs

I don't know if you're looking for graphic novels as well, but Age of Reptiles is amazing. It has no dialogue and the art is gorgeous. There's also Dinosaurs vs Aliens another just really fun book.

Also, looks like I'm going to be looking some of the reccomendations in this thread up myself.

u/Tigertemprr · 0 pointsr/comicbooks

All Ages (age ratings sourced from Comixology)

u/5hadowduck · 3 pointsr/overthegardenwall

I own all of these and really love all of them

soundtrack on vinyl -a beautiful mastering to just sit and chill to

The "For Sara" Cassette Tape -complete with clarinet and Elisha Wood poetry

The Art book -a really cool and in depth look into what went in to making the series

The comic series -been a while since I read through it, but I remember it being pretty good and gives more character to some of the side characters in the show.

There are also plenty of other things out there like keychains, stickers and plushes, but I'm not much into collecting that stuff.

u/bootsorhearts · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

In that case she might be interested in the recent Banana Guard Academy miniseries, featuring a character named Root Beer Guy. As well, though they don't take place in a shared universe, she might really like the Bee and Puppycat videos (though I haven't seen any of the new ones yet), which are created by a person who works on Adventure Time and who created Fiona and Cake - who have their own comics as well now that I think of it. Bee and Puppycat also has a comic :)

u/Kenpobuu · 10 pointsr/youngjustice

Here are Amazon links for the digital editions because the physical copies have been out of print for several years and have gotten really expensive.

Young Justice Vol. 1

Young Justice Vol. 2: Training Day

Young Justice Vol. 3: Creature Features

Young Justice Vol. 4: Invasion

Those are (unfortunately) all of the comics that actually tie-in with the show. There is a Young Justice comic series that ran in he late 90s that is also good, but has nothing to do with the show. If you're itching for more comics in this same vein though, I'd check out that 90s Young Justice comic I mentioned and Geoff Johns's Teen Titans run from the early 2000s as they're both phenomenal.

u/Tepig314 · 4 pointsr/overthegardenwall

Well the most obvious recommendation would be the plethora of OTGW stuff that's been released since.

If you haven't checked it out yet the original short is available online, right here on youtube.

The first comic collection has stories from in between episodes, and I believe is cannon.

Since then, there has been an ongoing comic series. These contain stories from after the show, the longest thread being Greg and Wirt's adventures in their dreams. However there are also stories about Anna (the Woodsman's daughter), Mrs. Langtree, and others. The first few collections are available on amazon.

Lastly, a concept art book is about to be released, if you are interested in that sort of stuff.

Hope some of this helped!

u/fallenpenguin · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

Well, not all at once, but there are paperbacks collecting the individual comics:

Happy birthday? Are you doing anything funnn!?

D

Birthday Bot!

happy happy birthday to youuuuuu!

I think I'm interesting because I am a BEASTLY yard sale queen!
u/party_squad · 1 pointr/comicbooks

I didn't connect with the IDW but it is very well liked.

Here's my thought from a more old school perspective. If you have a little patience, you might wait for the TMNT Colour Classics upcoming trade paperback.

It collects the first ever TMNT books and should be a very good looking remaster of the collection.

If you're looking for more something more cartoony, go for TMNT Adventures.

u/dorrekskrull · 1 pointr/batman

Here are a few suggestions:
Batman
Batman and Green Lantern
Batman and the Flash
Tiny Titans

There are also Batman: The Brave and the Bold books written for children

Good luck OP!

u/centipededamascus · 4 pointsr/comicbooks

I think all of these would be great, and don't have any content that would be particularly objectionable to a nun:

u/StegosaurusArtCritic · 6 pointsr/Dinosaurs

Dinotopia is 100% mandatory. The pulpy kids' paperback novels were also great, when I was a kid.

THIS MOFO : gorgeous art, very immersive, I got it when I was in kindergarten so it left an impression.

For older kids (violence warning) there's always Age of Reptiles

u/ProjectDestati · 5 pointsr/KingdomHearts

When's her birthday? It'd be fun to send you an album of Kingdom Hearts music as a gift for her.

Alternatively, the 358/2 Days manga is a must-read for fans of the series. There are 5 volumes, about $10 each

u/Pope-Urban-III · 2 pointsr/Catholicism

If you liked the Divine Comedy, you'll like Mickey goes to Hell.

u/aderack · 2 pointsr/stevenuniverse

Can confirm the comics are a good choice. The "Warp Tour" compilation of the first few Ongoing comics and the recent "Fusion Frenzy" special are superb.

There are also the games, for various platforms; Save the Light is very well-designed, and has the involvement of the production team.

u/Tonitonigo · 2 pointsr/manga

You could, but it will probably be cheaper for you on Amazon.com. Here's volume 1 of One Piece to get you started: https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Vol-1-Japanese/dp/4088725093/

I've bought manga in Japanese from Amazon.com myself and have had zero issues. You won't find everything here, but you should be able to get pretty much all of One Piece in Japanese this way, and for a relatively good price.

u/butttwater · 1 pointr/shittyfoodporn

It's a character from Moomin! My favorite children's series. That "pad" is a book collection of stories, that we used to use as a laptop support to keep my bf's balls from cooking, and now that the laptop died and we have a desktop, we realized it's the perfect texture for a mouse pad. Love it :) though the one I'm using for my mouse is book 2

u/TheKiltedStranger · 1 pointr/comicbooks

Holy crap, I just looked at the price and you aren't kidding.

The one I linked is the 1st edition, you don't want that one (well, you do, but JEEZ), which I had, but had to sell a couple years ago. Then they reprinted it at Volume 1 and Volume 2, which are still expensive, but not multiple hundreds of dollars. If you want a little extra, like the gravy in between the stewy bits, you might also want the Companion, which is really cool.

EDIT Just looked again, and you can get a new 1st edition for about half of what you can get Volumes 1 & 2. Honestly, I'd just see if your library has it before you drop a c-note.

u/Qu33n0f1c3 · 3 pointsr/stevenuniverse

If you go to Walmart, they might still have some of the McFarlane building sets in the clearance section.

Hot topic should have some socks or little blind bag figures. They also have a lot of shirts in girls sizes.

You can also check eBay and Amazon to see if the old pops are reasonably priced.

There's also some 12 inch plushes for 30 bucks on Amazon of the diamonds, Lars, lion, etc.

I think hot topic still has their giant pumpkin plush.

The graphic novels are pretty good. The comic volumes are released and available on Amazon, and so are the graphic novels. I wouldn't recommend the shorter ones, like the answer, but the Art Book might be a nice option.

Steven Universe: Warp Tour (Vol. 1) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1684150337/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9ax3CbEACSRWZ this is the first volume of the ongoing comic

u/FabulousSecretP0wers · 41 pointsr/adventuretime

The Adventure Time comics by KaBOOM Studios. They're written by the same guy that does Dinosaur Comics. This is the first volume, which has the first story arch in it which I believe is the first four issues You can buy the individual ones too of course. There are 31 issues thus far.

I've said in this sub before that they're amazing many times, but I won't stop heh.

For the Fiona and Cake fans, of which there certainly are many, there's a spinoff written by Natasha Allegri

There's also a spinoff with Marceline, her band and Princess Bubblegum.

u/mediumdeviation · 3 pointsr/mylittlepony

Grab the upcoming omnibus
edition
collecting 12 issues for a very low price (assuming your friend's
birthday is after the publication date of November 4, that is).
Otherwise you have to get the comics volume by volume, which is rather
more expensive (these trade paperbacks are more expensive than average,
but they do use slightly better paper, and there's glitter on the
cover).

> for someone who doesn't watch the
show

Might have a problem there, because the comics do assume
knowledge of the show. Volume 1 is the return of Queen Chrysalis, and
Volume 2 is about Nightmarity. You might want to get Pony Tales vol. 1
and 2 instead, which are collection of one-shots that require less
background knowledge. I personally recommend volume
2
-
the four issue (CMC, Celestia, Spike and Luna) it collects are better
than the Mane 6 ones in volume 1 (Fluttershy and Twlight's issue were
bad)

u/Crash_Recovery · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

I'd ask what other media your kids are into. That can be a big factor in what comics you'd be into.

The Comic Book Code is effectively dead these days. Though some companies have their own systems, they're fairly loose, so don't take them to literally.

You might try some of the "Ultimate" Marvel books, like Ultimate Spider-Man in particular. This book is really clean and no graphic violence.

Bone is a good all ages pick, and I truly mean all ages. Though the art style is reminiscent of Charles Shultz "Peanuts", the plot is more in common with Lord of the Rings. For $30 you get 1300 pages.

There's a nice book (single trade paperback) called "I Kill Giants" that you may want to give a read before you recommend (as it includes maybe one instance of strong language. It's about a girl who has imaginary battles with giants which represent a larger problem in her life she's unwilling to confront.

Some of the New 52 is age appropriate and some is not. I'd steer clear of Batman, which seems like an obvious pick. Though it's a fantastic read, it's too violent for you to take to school.

Here are some other good picks which aren't racy and don't have any violence above "saturday morning cartoon" level.

Don't be shy about ordering used copies off of Amazon.com or gohastings.com either.

SQUIRREL GIRL!

I mean, for the love of Pete, look at her list of victories!

And speaking of rather unknown superheroes...

u/ProdigySim · 2 pointsr/japanese

Practically every manga I've seen has furigana on it. Anything intended for teens and below will have them for sure.

You can buy them online fairly cheap now as well, though shipping will probably take a while. e.g. https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Vol-1-Japanese/dp/4088725093

Edit: one other note, I've found that most shounen manga (one piece, shingeki no kyojin, etc) will contain a lot of world-specific language or dialects. If you really want something more focused on real world language usage, you might try to find a story more based in modern-day society rather than a fantasy world.

They're also doing them in regular-comic-size trades. This is volume 1, with most of the stories scripted by Scott McCloud. Also great stuff: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1401258670/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1458261982&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=suoerman+adventures

Salt Water Taffy is a great all-ages book.

Mickey's Inferno is real easy to read and surprisingly accurate.

Yup. That's the first one. They're all called "Adventure Time Vol. [Whatever Number]".

Here's the second one: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608863239/

And the third one: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608863174/

I'm fairly certain that IDW has recollected all of the issues. Here is Vol 1

This is what you seek: Age of Reptiles Omnibus, Vol. 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1595826831/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_UatMBb2NT092D

Made my imagination go wild as a kid. A little gruesome though. Might wanna give it a one over before letting the kid read it.

Amazon has it. I've also seen it in some book stores.

Is the paperback the comic? I'm not sure if it has the artwork, or if it is just a regular book. This is the one I'm talking about. http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Fionna-Natasha-Allegri/dp/1608863387/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452240120&sr=8-1&keywords=fionna+and+cake

It's just Steven Universe (2017-). Look for the one written by Melanie Gilman, not Jeremy Sorese.

It's a bit dumb because they have like 3 separate comics series with nearly or completely identical names.
