Fun, thanks for hosting the scavenger hunt!
Edit: Finished! I love scavenger hunts; it always reminds me what a weirdo I am.
>For X-Men, is the "Astonishing X-Men" a decent starter? Or are there better and shorter X-Men comics out there?
This is certainly a good place to start. The Essential X-Men collections are pretty good and cheap too. They're uncolored, but you get a lot of content for the price.
>As for Batman, I know there are a lot of fantastic stand alone graphic novels vs. full length stories. Would it be better to read the stand alone ones or a series?
Either way. Personally, I'd recommend the long Halloween and dark victory as a starting point.
>I'd also like to read something from the Teen Titans universe, but I have no idea where to start.
I couldn't tell you where to start with teen titans. I know that Young Avengers, the Marvel series running now is really great.
Here are some recommendations I've copy pasted from posts I've made on similar threads. Everything on this list is good.
Before I get to the list, I'll mention that it may not seem like I'm super active, but I was away from the sub for a week or so, but if you look into my posts from before that, you'll see I'm pretty active. :)
1.) Something that is blue. - I mean, it's literally blue.
2.) Something that says summer. - What says summer better than SURFING!?
3.) Something food related that is unusual. - It's a Kit Kat. But it's GREEN TEA flavored!
4.) Something you want to gift to someone else, and tell me why. - I've been trying to get /u/quickwittedslowpoke to buy this manga because it's awesome, but she hasn't yet. I really want her to read it!
5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! - Shameless shilling. My friend wrote this book and I want him to become famous! :D
6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! - I don't really have a great reason for this, it was just on my mind because I had considered getting it as a gag gift for my uncle's birthday since his lucky number is 113 and that Pokemon is #113, but I didn't end up doing it since it wouldn't have arrived by his birthday (which already passed).
7.) Something related to dogs. - I have no idea what GSD is, sorry D:
8.) Something that is not useful, but so awesome you must have it. - It's literally just a statue. It doesn't do anything but look cute. But she's one of my favorite characters :D
9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? - This is one of the best Anime films of all time. Even if you're not into anime, I still highly recommend it. It has won COUNTLESS awards already. It's a pretty big deal in the anime community. It's got a great plot and it's so sad that if you don't cry, you have no soul.
10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. - Zombies can't swim. Foolproof plan. They'll eventually decay in the sun and all die within a few days, and you'll be out on your cool ass boat, safe from the chaos.
11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. - I know it seems a little silly, but I'm trying to learn to cook better, and I just don't really have very good cooking tools...
12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. - Fun fact: I obsessively clean my ears. :I
13.) Something fandom related. - It's three fandoms in one! Super Smash Bros, Nintendo and Final Fantasy! :D
14.) Something ridiculously priced, more than $10,000. They exist, y’all. - Because it's eleven times what you asked :)
15.) Something with sharks or unicorns. - It was actually pretty decent.
16.) Something that smells wonderful. - At least I think it does. Needs lots of sugar though lol
17.) A toy that you wanted or had when you were a child that was the best ever, or (if it’s not on amazon) a toy that you think is pretty cool now - Does this count? I had the original back in the 80s/90s, and this is a new model with packed in games. But yeah, this shit was my childhood!
18.) Something that would be helpful for writers. - I mean, really, what're you gonna do with unsharpened pencils?
19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. - The Precure anime franchise is one of my guilty pleasures, and this character, Cure Peace, is my favorite character in the series! :D
20.) Something that is just so random and weird that it makes you laugh. - Because why the fuck not?
As much as I love Fraction's Hawkeye (which you will be recommended over and over, seriously it's very good), for a more complete understanding of the character I'd actually recommend you go a little further back to start. For a bare-bones beginning, check out:
Of course there is so much more, but for the most concise understanding of Hawkeye's classic beginnings, these are absolutely essential.
For the "how", you could go the physical route and get TPBs from Amazon or bookstores - in which case I recommend:
Avengers: Hawkeye or Earth's Mightiest Marksman - both collect the original Gruenwald solo series, with the former including his origin and some 70s material, and the latter with some late 80s stuff.
Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier - Excellent modern story, if you liked Endgame Hawkeye you'll like this one. The art is a little odd but it grows on you.
Hawkeye and the Thunderbolts - Some definite 90s cheese, but if you're into that it's an excellent ensemble series that Hawkeye really shines in as a leader, since his whole character is basically built on the value of second chances.
Hawkeye Vs Deadpool - A very fun, light, modern story by the hilarious and inimitable Gerry Duggan, also has Kate Bishop.
Hawkeye and Mockingbird: Ghosts - Also modern but more serious in tone, with a lot of WCA influence. I'm a little biased, but Bobbi and Clint make an excellent team no matter where in the timeline you are.
Secret Avengers - not Hawkeye centric but he is on the team, it's another ensemble book that you may enjoy. Again the art is a bit nontypical, but it's a fun ride.
Or, as you said, pretty much just stroll into a comic book shop and say "Hawkeye please" and see what they point you toward. TBPs are great for new readers because they usually collect 4 or 5 issues of a story at a time, and if you like it you can continue the story in the next volume, or just leave it and hop on to something else.
And don't forget to check out your local library! Many of them have TPBs to borrow, or can get you them from other branches. ♫Having fun isn't hard, when you've got a library card!♫
If you prefer digital, Marvel Unlimited is a good way to catch up on any character's back issues - it's a subscription service ($10/mo or
$60$69/year) that gets you access to basically any Marvel book older than 6 months. Comixology is also a good digital source, if you want to pick and choose particular issues to buy (including more recent ones).Ok, here we go :)
Tiny Titans (DC) - funny and awesome, lots of jokes
All New Batman: Brave and the Bold (DC cartoon tie in) - action and humour
Young Justice (DC cartoon tie in) - more superhero actiony
Young Justice - there's an older series by this name as well with Superboy, Robin, Impulse, Wonder Girl, Arrowette and the Secret that's good too.
Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade - great for his age group and fun
The Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century (DC) - superhero group set in the DC future
Ultimate Spider-man (Marvel) - this is really good and you can either start waaaay back at the beginning or start with the new Miles Morales spidey.
Non-Superhero books that are good options too:
Bone (Scholastic) - fantasy, adventure, humour, a classic that's been completed
Amulet (Scholastic) - fantasy, adventure, still being written (I think)
Tin Tin - a classic and you can get the ones the movie is based on. There will be more movies too, so lots to tie into. Some action, adventure, detective type stories.

There's a really good all-ages Rocket Raccoon series that also features Groot going on right now. The first collection isn't out until February, but maybe put it on your list: http://amzn.com/0785193898
Marvel did a series of fun all-ages graphic novels featuring a team of kid superheroes called Power Pack a few years ago that I would recommend picking up. Anyhow, I mention them because one of the novels was Power Pack and Wolverine. Great for a seven year old.
Another all-ages series I think he'd like is Bone by Jeff Smith. It's a sort of fantasy adventure story, really good stuff. There's nine volumes in all, here's the first one: http://amzn.com/0439706408
Does he like Adventure Time? There's some really good Adventure Time comics out there. Here's the first collection: http://amzn.com/1608862801
Marvel put out some great comics under the "Marvel Adventures" label that are great for younger readers. My favorite is Marvel Adventures: Avengers. Another are the Power Pack books. All are collected in nice digest-sized collections perfect for kids.
From DC, the trade paperbacks of Tiny Titans are worth tracking down, and there's a collection of the terrific Batman: Lil' Gotham coming out soon. My nephew is a huge fan of the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon, so I've been getting him some collections of the related comic series as birthday gifts. I also got him a copy of the DC Super-Pets Encyclopedia, and it was so cool I ordered my own copy.
I love both of these episodes, and I can't pick a favorite.
Jake vs. Me-Mow was awesome because of the perfect tension it created, and Me-Mow is adorable and scary. I have a soft spot for cute characters who might be evil(looking at you, Catbug).
Thank You is just even more adorable. I love when a show is able to pull off an almost silent episode, we need more of that in media. It reminded me of the Owly books, which are nearly wordless comics that I loved as a child. Also, I love that Finn is still wearing the like-like sweater. It's cute, and also shows that he still cares about PB, even if it's not going to work out, they are still friends.
Slightly unrelated note: If we get to season 4 here without any word on Preboot/Reboot, I'm going to be worried.
People tend to look down their noses at comic books, but this is what got my daughter to read.
As a starter, I'd recommend Owly by Andy Runton. The books are absolutely adorable and there are no words, just pictures. Owly goes on adventures with his friends and the books are very dynamic stories for not having text. I love them as an adult too!
If she seems interested, you can move on to books that are in her interests- there are kids' comics for Nickelodeon shows, crossovers with stars from Glee, even Doctor Who comics if she likes that show (I know a lot of younger kids are into Doctor Who these days).
Visit your local comic shop and take a look around, you'd be amazed at the selection, variety, and quality of children's comics these days.
Read The Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa. It is a collection of issues 0-12 of the series (issues 285-297 of the comic) The original paperback is $$$ since its out of print, but the hardcover is more affordable if you get it used. Going to a comic shop is the best bet. I expect they will have it on their shelf for cover price. Heck, you can probably buy the original issues for cover price.
In the original Carl Barks stories Scrooge would often make outrageous claims like the fact that he was a cattleman in Australia, a 49er in California or encouraged Teddy Roosevelt to take up politics. When Don Rosa took up the series and it turns out there is no bigger Carl Barks fan than him. He did a series of comics elaborating on all those fun tidbits and put together a quintessential history of Uncle Scrooge that is beyond enjoyable. It's a great read and gives you fabulous insight into McDuck's character.

I agree (Dad of 7 and 3 year old). Stories about kids are great - there's no shortage of chapter/picture books available and it would give your sister and brother-in-law a great way to bond. Personally, I think that'd be the best way to go.
That said, comics are a fun escape and are worthwhile. Stuff like Bone is wonderful but it gets intense and heavy and may not be the right thing just yet. I'd suggest lighter, fun stuff like:
All are charming, entertaining, completely age-appropriate, and good old fashioned escapism.
Absolutely!
I'm a huge Batman fan too, but I know I'd want something with tamer content depending on my kid's age.
Batman Lil' Gotham is a great all-ages Batman book. It's more light hearted but very well done. This book could be read to him at pretty much any age.
http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Lil-Gotham-Vol-1/dp/1401244947/ref=sr_1_1_twi_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1425668923&sr=1-1&keywords=batman+lil+gotham
This Batman Animated Series is great for grade school and up. Stories are along the lines of the show, entertaining but not graphic.
http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Adventures-Vol-Kelley-Puckett/dp/140125229X/ref=sr_1_2_twi_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1425668978&sr=1-2&keywords=batman+animated
Batman/Superman Vol 1 is a great story of Batman and Superman against some of their biggest enemies. A little stronger (Superman gets shot and bleeds) but nothing too crazy.
http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Batman-Vol-Jeph-Loeb/dp/1401248187/ref=sr_1_3_twi_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1425669033&sr=1-3&keywords=batman+superman+vol+1
NHK Easy Web is perfect for starting out. I've always recommended it for learning kana in context, when repetitive writing of them doesn't seem to help memorize them. Plus easy kanji in context, and easy and simple enough sentences. A bit rough going at first, but you do what you can, and you'll likely get the overall sense of the article.
I also like the Japanese Reader Collection and Yotsuba&! are also excellent and easy enough. Just take your time with them, you'll learn a lot. A little light manga never hurts.
I'd love to recommend the Japanese Graded Reader, and do, but they're kind of pricy for what you get. If you have some spare cash, these are worth it.
Physical copies look better imo. The colors are nicer. I you are willing to wait, get the Trade Paperbacks!
Volume 1 (Chrysalis Arc, which is awesome) is out here.
Volume 2 (Nightmare arc, personaly didn't like as much) will be out Sept. 24 here.
There will also be a compilation of the mane 6 micro series in November here.
The Rarity and the Pinkie comic were both top notch, while the others varied from good to mediocre (depending who you ask). But it is a good price for 6 comics!
Issue 9 was great, Volume 3 is looking like it will be awesome (no date yet for that one).
All of the comics are canon, but I think I know what you mean. The first 5 take place directly during the show (4 about the main gang, and 1 about the woodsman's daughter), so they are the most canon I suppose. Those 5 are now in an actual book, which I really recommend, it's very nicely put together. The on-going series (Greg's dreams, Wirt's dreams, the Woodsman's daughter, and occasionally Langtree's school) can be found at about half of most comic book stores, I've been to around 7 or so shops lately, and had luck at 3 of them.
I recently bought the box set of the Manga. I've only read the two Ocarina of Time books, but he isn't a snarky wiseguy in those. Far from it, in fact. There are moments where he has a playful rivalry with Mido, but that is as close as it gets.
Edit: Also, if you like retellings with differences in plot points (mainly, if you can divorce yourself from the original) and you enjoy manga, I would recommend picking them up. I'm not a huge manga person and I'm sure that there are better manga out there, but I enjoyed the ones I have read so far.
An example of needing to divorce yourself: Volvagia is purchased by Link as a child in Hyrule Market, and subsequently set free. Link then has to make the tough choice to kill Volvagia in the fire temple because he has been cursed

Resources:

EDIT: I don't think they are well collected/advertised because they are comics for a previously canceled TV show. The Young Justice Wiki has pages on each volume though and links to DCComics & Amazon. Best resource: http://youngjustice.wikia.com/wiki/Young_Justice_Vol._1
Best hope is either Kindle & comiXology, maybe DC will collect them all before season 3 though.
Is she set on superheroes? Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks is all ages, stars a badass girl as the main character, and is an all-around fun read. You might enjoy reading it too.
Tiny Titans is a safe bet for kids of all genders, featuring superhero action by boys and girls both in what's just a fun comic for kids.
ELIGIBLE AS OF END OF MAY 2018

Manga seems an obvious choice here, something like Yotsuba to could be fun. Others to check out are Kamikaze Girls and Nana
In terms of mythology and folk lore:
Lafcaido Hearn's ghost stories are quite fun.
As is this book on Japanese monsters - The Book of Yokai
Lastly, I am a literature person so I have to recommend at least one piece of literature. Perhaps something like Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen or Soseki's I Am a Cat could be good a young reader and serve as an introduction to Japanese literature. Though admittedly the Soseki may a little much for 12 years old. It is a great book though!
Jaco the Galalctic Patrolman was an 11-chapter manga, written/illustrated by Akira Toriyama, serialized in 2013 in Weekly Shonen Jump both in Japan and America/internationally (in English by Viz). It received a collected release in Japan in 2014, and earlier this year in America from Viz (print/digital).
Shueisha hyped it ahead of time, somewhat spoiling things, as the "shocking revival of Dragon Ball".
Without ACTUALLY spoiling things for you: it's a wonderful comedy series that works beautifully on its own and provides a rather perfect lead-in to Dragon Ball.
Then it got a bonus chapter in its collected release, "Dragon Ball Minus," which may be one of the most derided pieces of Dragon Ball content in decades.
Funny how that works.
You can purchase the print edition from a variety of places (like Amazon), or the digital edition also from a variety of places (like Amazon or directly from Viz themselves).
I only buy omnibuses or deluxe editions (aka oversized collections) from marvel and DC now. Marvel has gotten into the practice of putting four issues into a twenty dollar paperback, which is insanely over-priced.
For example, I recently bought the second volume in the over-sized collections of Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction for $20 on amazon. This volume had the same issues as three paperbacks combined, and the pages have a better quality to them and are larger than the paperbacks. If I had bought the crappy floppy paperbacks, I would have spent about fifteen dollars more. I saved money and got a better edition of the comic.
So good deals still exist, you just have to be patient.

Thanks. I actually love superman out of all super heroes. But I have never read any of those superman comics and I wasn't sure if they would be age appropriate. But reading your comment gives me a good review.
Is it this one ?
I second Bone. Though might be a bit too much for a 6 year old as well. It is a big read. I honestly would recommend something that your niece would enjoy and even your nephew may as well: Tiny Titans. It's just a fun little book that even you might find enjoyable just for the pure silliness.
Welcome to the Treehouse
I got them on Amazon!
It's also Prime eligible if you have it.
Note: In the interest of full disclosure, the amazon link is a referral link. I'd appreciate it if you could help a college student out and use that link to buy it if you end up deciding to purchase it.
Happy Reading :)
DC really kills it with their animation, and you can't really go wrong with most of their animated films. If you like Batman, you'll probably love his animated films. Also, you should check out the DC Showcase shorts. These shorts feature B and C listers in smaller "street level" adventures.
Young Justice also has tie-in comics that are in the continuity of the show. If you're liking the show, you'll probably enjoying reading these alongside it.
These are great! For those that want a physical copy, Amazon has a really cheap official box set of the ones by Akira Himekawa. From what I remember, it is a pretty good translation. :)
http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Box-Set/dp/1421542420/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411666916&sr=8-1&keywords=zelda+comic
Here's what I would suggest you do. Go buy the Ultimate Spider-Man graphic novels. Here's the first one: Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1: Power and Responsibility
That graphic novel is issues #1-7. There's also an 'ultimate collection' that collect 1-13 or the omnibus that collects 1-39. So depending on how much you want to spend you can go any route. Ultimate Spider-Man is a great place to start because it doesn't have a ton of back issues from back in the 60's. All Issues.
Or... You can check out marvels monthly subscription service. It has a monthly fee and you can digitally read all the comics they have available, which is a lot and they are always adding more.
Finally no one should EVER put you down for your ignorance to comics since there are not enough people who are into comics. Anyone who is new to comics and feigns any interest should be treated with absolute respect and have all questions answered no matter how silly they may seem. I love it when people as questions!
I love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I've got a small collection of the minifigures and brushable ponies, as well as some great Funko figures. I've recently gotten into comic books a little bit, but have yet to pick up the My Little Pony comics, so I'd love to have this, or really anything from my My Little Pony wishlist.
Thanks for the contest :)
> Picture books and chapter books appreciated! :)
Does that include graphic novels? Finding comic books for kids that feel like 'standard' fantasy (swords & sorcery/high fantasy) has been surprisingly challenging. Oddly enough, the only one that I've found that really fits is the comic book version of A Link to the Past: https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Link-Past/dp/1421575418/
For non-standard fantasy that still uses many standard fantasy tropes, I really like Adventure Time: https://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801/
And of course further off the path there's also Bone, Usagi Jimbo, and Amulet.
I don't think there's any solo stuff so far (although I'd love to see her get a series of her own sometime, even a mini would be neat).
Really Rescue's "origin story," all that comes after and the sacrifices she's asked to make to help Tony are a fantastic read.
And if you pick up the collections, either the omnibuses or the trades, they have inserts in them that explain things you might have missed out on if you weren't following Secret Invasion, Siege, etc.
Invincible Iron Man:
The Five Nightmares (#1-7)
World's Most Wanted (#8-19)
Stark: Disassembled (#20-24)
Stark Resilient (#25-33)
Easiest and cheapest way by far to get all 33 issues is the omnibus collections:
Omnibus 1
Omnibus 2
Edit: ColdFury96 pointed out below Rescue has gotten a one-shot comic. I haven't read it yet so I can't recommend it myself, but it's by Kelly Sue DeConnick so I'm sure it's good.
Well, not all at once, but there are paperbacks collecting the individual comics:
For the sake of completeness, there's also an omnibus, which also collects the main series, but is the equivalent of 3(?) of the regular paperbacks I mentioned above.
Finally, if you don't want/need physical books, they're also available on the Comixology app, I believe.
I hope that helps!
"Most manga is of a sexual nature" is an enormous overreach. It might be disproportionately represented by English-language internet anime fanboys, but that doesn't reflect the state of manga in Japan. Manga is read widely in Japan, including young children. Some of the manga I've been reading lately include Chi's Sweet Home, a comedy manga about a kitten and her family; Yotsuba&!, a completely wholesome manga about a kindergartener; and a lot of manga based on Pokemon, which are as family-friendly as the Pokemon cartoon that's aired for children for decades.
I'm not defending the sexually exploitative nature of the many manga that are, but saying all manga is sexualized is as absurd as saying most video games are hyper-violent murder-sprees. M rated games exist, but most people play Mario, Pokemon, sports games, etc. Hypersexualized manga exist, but most Japanese people read non-sexual manga like Doraemon and Astro Boy.
Take a look at the historically highest-selling manga in Japan; most of the biggest contain little to no sexual content: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_manga
There are three MLP comic series, and there are indeed trade paperbacks, though obviously not all the issues of ongoing series have been collected yet. It's a good idea to read the main series in order, but doesn't really matter for the others.
The main series, simply titled "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" has story arcs of either 2 or 4 issues. With a few exceptions, they are mostly very high quality (Katie Cook and Andy Price are very good at their jobs).
The "micro series" (collected under the title "Pony Tales") featured one-shot issues focusing on individual characters. Quality-wise, they tended to be a bit hit-or-miss. It is now completed.
After the micro series finished, a new side series called "Friends Forever" started, focusing on the relationship between a pair of characters. The first issue wasn't great, but I've liked all the others so far.
Here are a few suggestions:
Batman
Batman and Green Lantern
Batman and the Flash
Tiny Titans
There are also Batman: The Brave and the Bold books written for children
Good luck OP!
They're quite entertaining, a very underrated corner of the franchise.
The best way to buy them is to look for the trade paperback volumes, here's a link to the first one on Amazon. Those collect a story arc at a time and are easier to manage for buying and handling than single issues.
Or if you want digital copies, which are cheaper, look to Comixology. Reading comics is pretty painful on a phone screen though if that's going to be your method.
There’s an Omnibus that has issues 20-33.
There’s only left though, best of luck.
Invincible Iron Man Omnibus, Vol. 2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/0785145532/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aoQ5CbSXFNY4K
I also believe there was a Metal Gear Solid series
Well you can check out some of these trade paper back editions.
First things to be available is volume one and volume two.
But if your also interested the Micro-series is going to be released in November.
Remember though there really is no value in the trade back if you are planning to re-sell. Good for the read, still though I find them good to get signed.
For the comics, a good place to start is with this book, which contains both the special and the 4 part series. These particular comics are most connected to the show, because the first four take place between certain episodes. The fifth and final comic in this book sheds some light on the Woodsman and his daughter. These were all written by Pat.
There is also the current on-going series, which takes place after the show and follows a whole new story. The next issue comes out on Wednesday. If you want to catch up, your best bet is probably going to be with digital copies. For future physical copies, you can find them at a local comic book store.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa
This is just the first chapter, you can find the whole book in the Amazon link below.
It tells the story of Scrooge from his early life leading up to his older days which he is more known by.
This is easily my favourite story by Don Rosa. And it's a whole book! I always read it when I'm home on holidays.
EDIT:
As /u/ITHICmeaningstone pointed out; Supporting Don Rosa might be better then getting free copies online. So here it is on Amazon.
Paperback version cheaper alternative then the hard cover.
SECOND EDIT:
I retract my previous statement as it appears you can almost only buy it used from Amazon. Thus I sadly believe they are out of production. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong. There are some PDF's floating around the Internet though.
All you people excited for the game:
Scrooge McDuck and the Duck stories in general are wildly, incredibly, money-bin crushingly popular overseas and in Europe. Americans just don't have the same love for Carl Barks and Don Rosa's stories as the rest of the world. If you can, go out and find yourself/torrent/whatever a copy of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and you'll understand what I mean.
Is Lil Gotham collected?
That's pretty cool and he'd probably like that.
Edit: yep http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Lil-Gotham-Vol-1/dp/1401244947/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416937360&sr=8-2&keywords=lil+gotham
He is the main character of Akira Toriyama's recent short comedy manga: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman." It's a funny story that takes place in the DB universe.
The manga he starts in takes place before Dragonball begins. And it appears that he returns to earth to star in this movie.
I recently just bought it off amazon. It's a fun read.
My cousins love the Tiny Titans comic book series, and while I've never read them they are listed as preschool level. There do seem to be a fair amount of female superheroes present though I don't know that it's exclusively focused on them. There is a Marvel equivalent (Mini Marvels), but I'm also not sure how girl-focused those are. Still, good beginning comics for young kids.
I'm about to find this out. My little guy is 3 and I just bought both volumes of Lil' Gotham to try him out on. I also picked up the first book of Dragons:Riders of Berk based on the how to train your dragon movies for him. I'll let you know how he ends up liking them.
To this point though I'm collecting the series I've enjoyed the most and on a few getting floppies and on a few others getting tpb's. I'm always on the lookout for things that are age appropriate for him and are rooted in the main two superhero worlds since he already says Batman is his favorite.
Holy crap, I just looked at the price and you aren't kidding.
The one I linked is the 1st edition, you don't want that one (well, you do, but JEEZ), which I had, but had to sell a couple years ago. Then they reprinted it at Volume 1 and Volume 2, which are still expensive, but not multiple hundreds of dollars. If you want a little extra, like the gravy in between the stewy bits, you might also want the Companion, which is really cool.
EDIT Just looked again, and you can get a new 1st edition for about half of what you can get Volumes 1 & 2. Honestly, I'd just see if your library has it before you drop a c-note.
Here is a full list http://steven-universe.wikia.com/wiki/Steven_Universe_(comic_series)
You can find the trades for cheaper than a comic shop by going to amazon
Here for volume 1
Here for volume 2
Here is the Steven Universe & The Crystal Gems trade
Here is graphic novel 1
Here is graphic novel 2
There are also a bunch of scattered issues that will probably be collected into a trade eventually. 2 are 1-shots from the original series. And there is currently a new series that has 6 issues.
Also if you don't mind digital copies of the first two volumes you can get them here for even cheaper
Batman: Lil' Gotham http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1401244947/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1416633678&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
Also, silver age stuff would work. I just read an issue where the narrative read something like, "And where does every hero go when they have a puzzle to solve? To the public library!"
The Adventure Time comics by KaBOOM Studios. They're written by the same guy that does Dinosaur Comics. This is the first volume, which has the first story arch in it which I believe is the first four issues You can buy the individual ones too of course. There are 31 issues thus far.
I've said in this sub before that they're amazing many times, but I won't stop heh.
For the Fiona and Cake fans, of which there certainly are many, there's a spinoff written by Natasha Allegri
There's also a spinoff with Marceline, her band and Princess Bubblegum.
It was a bit under $50 with tax and free shipping from Amazon. Here are the titles:
The Answer
Guide to the Crystal Gems
Too Cool for School
Steven Universe Vol. 1
Steven Universe Vol. 2
To rank the quality of each series from lowest to greatest would go as follows.
Showcase Presents: Batman - super cheap paper, printed only in black and white.
Batman Chronicles - much better quality paper, printed in color, a lot less pages than Showcase presents
Batman Archives - Most expensive, high quality glossy paper, printed in color, more pages than Batman Chronicles but less than Showcase Presents.
If you are about high quality than get the archives. If you just want to read it in color then go with Chronicles. If you just want to read the story and the quality doesn't matter then get Showcase presents (I got showcase Presents for Green arrow vol 1 for $5 at my local shop and I didn't regret it)
If it's the manga you're looking for,
http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Box-Set/dp/1421542420/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320023635&sr=8-1
If it's the original Legend of Zelda comic you're looking for (based on the first two games), they've been out of print since 1993. (I'm guessing this may be the one you're looking for based on the number of volumes that were released). eBay and similar sites would be the best way of collecting them.
Yup! There are two different series, and I believe you can buy them both as ebooks:
A limited run written by Pat McHale, which fills in the gaps in the canon series with new stories. Issue #1 is an adventure taking place directly before Tales of the Dark Lantern is set. Issue #2 is set right before Mad Love, and is a comprehensive look at Fred's backstory and his relationship with the Highwayman, as told by Fred to Beatrice/Wirt/Greg. Issue #3 is another adventure in which we see a bit more of Beatrice's perspective and guilty conscience. Issue #4 is Anna's backstory.
The second series is ongoing (you can buy a subscription as well as the previous issues on Comixology). Half the adventures take place post-canon as Greg (and later Wirt) wind up in the Unknown when they're asleep. The other half of the adventures are Anna's life at home on her own, meeting the ghost of her mother among other things.
There are also a few issues in there so far illustrated by George Mager, which are tales of Langtree's classroom written picture-book-style.
I would start with the first four issues:
http://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-Volume/dp/1613776055/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1411529406&sr=8-3&keywords=MLP+vol.+1
The story is probably one of the best MLP stories I've ever read, show and comic combined.
The first four are by the team Andy Price and Katie Cook. Any MLP comic worked on by them I would recommend picking up.
> I hope you know legend of zelda....
Of course. :P
Ah I see. Well I think that could be a fun comic to draw. You should read the Zelda manga comics for visual reference. For the story, I think you could make your comic unique from a lot of the other stuff out there by really focusing on making one of the characters compelling. I love Zelda, but I feel the characters are really flat in terms of development.
If you want the very first introductions of the characters, DC puts out Showcase volumes, which contain a ton of issues from the very early adventures. They are black and white and on newsprint, but it's a good way to read old comics. If you want to take the next step and pay a little extra, you can get the DC Archive Editions.
Batman
Justice League
Aquaman
Especially the collection of Don Rosa's the life and times of scrooge mcduck and if you like it you can always check out the companion collection
Both very good and both suitable (and enjoyable) for all ages.
You know that Jaco first appeared in his own Jaco the Galactic Patrolman manga before he showed up in Resurrection F and Super, right? I strongly suggest reading it sometime. You can get the entire one-volume story for well under $10 on Amazon.
You can either watch them on YouTune, download them, or you can buy them if you wish to support the creators.
There are official comics, yeah. There's an ongoing series featuring story arcs that are about 4 issues in length (currently on the second arc, issue 8 is due out soon) and a few one-shots featuring an individual character, of which there are currently 4 of, with more coming.
You can find digital copies of everything here.
If you prefer physical copies, you can check your local comic shop, or pick up the newly released trade paperback that contains the first four issues at sites like amazon. Link
I have a friend with an 8 year old daughter. Can speak from experience that she's addicted to these:
Phoebe and her unicorn
https://www.amazon.com/Phoebe-Her-Unicorn-Book/dp/1449446205
My Little pony comics
https://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-Magic/dp/1613776055
Smile
https://www.amazon.com/Smile-Raina-Telgemeier/dp/0545132061
Power Pack.
Marvel did a whole line of Power Pack titles and other books that were meant for a younger audience. You can often find them in used book stores (I think they're out of print) or comic book stores with a good backlog.
Comixology is gonna be your best bet on iOS or Android. But Comixology is owned by Amazon, and AFAIK, the entire collection is available on Kindle as well. And you can buy it on Amazon and read it in the Comixology app. So this, for example, sounds like what you're after. The second and third volumes are also available.
Comixology does have the collected editions, but they're more expensive. The choice is yours.
This is the trade paperback collecting the first few issues, and I'm pretty sure it includes all the issues up to #6.
Well you can buy the volumes off amazon (with Kindle versions available), if that helps. They're relatively inexpensive.
Yes, for the most part. The Teen Titans originally appeared in the mid-1960s, but really hit their peak in the 1980s. A couple years ago, DC rebooted continuity, so none of that 'happened,' but there's a new series carrying on. There's also explicitly out-of-continuity stuff like Tiny Titans and the TV show tie-in Teen Titans Go!.
Same thing for Young Justice.
The original run of comics (by Jeremy Sorese and Coleman Engle) ran for 8 issues. They are compiled in these TPBs: Vol 1 Vol 2
There was also a Greg Universe one-shot in the same series (probably my favorite of all the comics). That's available here
The more recent series, Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems, ran for 4 issues. They aren't available in a volume yet, only individual issues. Issue 1 is here, and this is the upcoming paperback.
There's also a standalone graphic novel.
I recommend getting the volumes because they're MUCH easier to track down.
Think I found it.
http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Box-Set/dp/1421542420/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324942014&sr=1-1
I'll wait with the order, there is a big chance that that friend of mine bought me a few :P
The ongoing series of 4 issue arcs.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-Magic/dp/1613776055/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1406587643&sr=1-1&keywords=my+little+pony+friendship+is+magic
I think this is the first one? It seems that everyone says all the comics are good and worth getting.
here you go- twilight sold separately but easily found on amazon by searching “twilight manga”
Edit: probably try twilight princess manga. Otherwise, vampires
I got it from here for $11 you get 4 comics in one. It's great.
I don't remember specific names of the stories, but I do remember really liking Don Rosa's stories. He focuses more on Scrooge McDuck, but there is also some Donald and the kids in there.
https://www.amazon.com/Life-Times-Scrooge-McDuck/dp/0911903968
Actually, if you're in the UK/EU, shipping is free/reasonable, and the first TPB is at a very nice price. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801
A few more months until it's released though. (it comes out on my birthday! Mathmatical!)
From the graphic novel "Steven Universe: Too Cool for School".
Adventure Time comics!
You'd be better off buying the small books which compile the story arcs.
http://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-Volume/dp/1613776055/ref=pd_sim_b_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1XB0JYV99JAHKM0Q7BE9
http://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-Volume/dp/1613777604/ref=pd_sim_b_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1XB0JYV99JAHKM0Q7BE9
You mean this? The GBP price is a bit higher (thanks, brexit voters!) but that's still not a bad deal!
If you don't want it digitally, you're much better off getting the trade paperbacks, rather than the single issues.
This has the first 4 issues: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801
Today's your lucky day.
If you're interested in more, there's a box set of ten books.
Don't be put off by how dark some Batman stories are. They make Batman comics for all age demographics nowadays. Here's a link to help get you started.
http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Lil-Gotham-Vol-1/dp/1401244947#
For me, it depends on every "leak". If it's a turkish translation that was already shown on TV, it's not really a leak... It's just that the US channel is messing with the airdates again. But if it's leaked by some darker ways, that's just VERY WRONG.
Anyway, I don't really mind as YJ is not being translated to spanish nor french AFAIK so I'll watch it on English on US airdate.
PS: If you'd like to support the show, Amazon has the Volume One of the comic and it's quite a nice price: http://www.amazon.com/Young-Justice-Vol-Art-Baltazar/dp/1401233570
Also you can see the show online on Amazon too: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007OH7Q8G/ref=pd_sim_mov_aiv_2
Ah, that's understandable. If it helps, the comics are mostly just team bonding stuff that doesn't really change the plot at all. (For the first few issues, anyway. Haven't read the more recent ones yet.)
And the first 7 issues are collected in a trade for about 10 bucks, which isn't too bad.
There's going to be a [Graphic Novel] (http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Universe-Original-Graphic-Novel/dp/1608867714) about something like that.
So according to mangaupdates it's not completely translated.
Most likely because VIZ Media licensed it.
You can get the whole thing really cheap online (~$10):
Amazon
BookDepository
RightStuf Currently they have at least 33% off all Viz titles so now's a great time.
IMO you might as well pick it up if you like Dragon Ball. It's really not that expensive and probably no one will pick it back up to translate it. Maybe after the group translating Dr. Slump is done with it, they might do it, but it's not very likely.
Yotsuba&! price-matched on amazon.
For physicals I think the cheapest way is to buy them by volume. Volume 2 comes out in month. I tried to buy them physically and individually as they released but that proved to be very very costly on the shipping side. Also I would always find a new cooler cover a month later and have a little buyer's remorse. Digital copies are nice since you don't have to pay for shipping, and you get a scan of every page so it's the same thing just less tangible. Though I've read that the comic creators don't receive compensation through digial sales. Some kinda loophole. But ya know, no shipping costs. And as for free well yayponies posts the comics a day or so after they release. And there's always a comic thread on /mlp/ that dumps the comics and usually contains up to date information on future releases.
I'm surprised you don't have the Manga comics...
No problem, oh and I have other Zelda things not mentioned (non games).
I have the Club Nintendo LBW poster set (http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Between-Official-Nintendo/dp/B00J2J6C2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425355493&sr=8-1&keywords=link+between+worlds+poster+club+nintendo),
as well as the Legend of Zelda Manga Box set with 1-10 volumes, complete.
(as shown here,http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1421542420/sr=8-1/qid=1425355377/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1425355377&sr=8-1)
Let me know if those interest you!
johnny boo maybe
owly
i like some of the suggestion made by other but might be a bit to wordy for a 4 year old
Only one? Shit, given just how many official MLP comic series there are now (there are at least 10 of them now, including the main series), that's a tough question to answer.
I guess if you have the money for it, you could go for one of the compilation books. This one, for example, contains the first 4 issues of the main series.
You can also look at online comic shops like Comixology. They usually offer some good deals.
So far there's 3 arcs. each spanning 4 comics. You can get the first 4 in a bundle right now at amazon It's gonna be a while for volume 2 to be released, so you can get the individual comics at Hottopic.com
There's also a micro series, you can get those in a bundle as well. So far they've released twilight, rainbow dash, rarity and futtershy.
You can also buy digital versions on itunes, I have a few but I've rebuying them with the bundle, the paper version is just so much better.
Would something like this work (I'm sure you could buy them one at a time. It says the reading level is 8 and up but if he doesn't like reading then I'm not sure what level he would be at)

Sorry, but it's only 47 new on amazon.
Not sure where you're from, but it's still on sale at Amazon.
Try Spider-Men. It just started, so you can probably find a few #1s, and it's a self-contained story (so-far). They tell you everything you need to know as it comes up. Also, it only goes for 5 issues, so it's a good, short story to start with. You might also want to pick up either the Original Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1, or you can start with the relaunch with Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. I'd advise you start with the original, since the story line doesn't really start over with the new series, but you should be able to piece together the one or two things you don't get through context and maybe a little Googling. Now, I'm biased towards the Ultimate Universe, so you'll have to get your information regarding the mainstream Spider-Man from someone else.

I hate buying issues. Trades are the way to go for my money.
