I think it's really hard for a kid that age to imagine anyone living in circumstances so different from his own life experience. I remember reading a book that has always stuck with me called Homeless Bird. It's about an Indian child bride who is married off to a sick boy & then abandoned. This is where I also learned about bride burning. It won the National Book Award. I read a book a day when I was little & I don't remember many of them yet this one sticks out, 20 years later. For good reason.
