CamelBak is not overkill at all, I use one for all my rides and its great! Can store your phone, wallet, water, and if you want to be so prepared a spare tube & bike tools (but I imagine if its just a one time occurrence you wouldn't be taking that). I too am a fair skinned ginger so what I usually do is:

  1. Wear something long sleeve, but you want it to be breathable! Synthetic's normally do the trick...this is my go to for all outdoor activities.
  2. Wear Sunscreen on anything else that's exposed (back of neck, bottom of face, legs if you wear shorts). My preference is NO-AD available here. At the very least, get something that is SPF 30+ and "sport" or "sweat-proof". Don't forget some chapstick too!
  3. If you can get a helmet with a visor or try to find a lightweight cap that will go under your helmet...something along the lines of this.
  4. Prescription sun glasses or transition lenses would be a good future investment, on the short notice and cheap budget I would maybe try to find some sunglasses that can go over your regular glasses (if you need glasses badly enough you cannot ride a bike without them). Worst case scenario go without sunglasses.
  5. Last but not least...Leave Early! It sucks waking up early but if you can do the ride in the morning-ish before it gets too hot out. And I'm not saying you have to leave before the sun comes up or anything, but sometime around 9-10 should make your whole experience a lot better than if you go at noon (then you can go get Lunch, or Brunch if your into that kinda thing).

Hope this helps and enjoy your ride!

+1 on waterproof socks as long as you have dry shoes to wear at your destination. I like this combo way better than the over-shoe booties. I have 2 pairs of bike shoes and one that I dedicate for wet days. I have these.

These work really well and all you need is a thin sock underneath of em. Or you can go for full overshoes, like these. Are your wool socks sweaty when you take them off? The sweat in the sock will cause your feet to be even more cold due to the cold wind. I had the problem of my feet being too warm which caused my socks to retain sweat which froze my toes.

Has anyone tried the Gore Bike Wear Gore-Tex Socks? It seems like they could be a viable alternative to Rocky Socks and half the price.
