I agree on balls and frisbees. I'm a huge fan of the brand ChuckIt. Especially the balls like these. They seem to hold up very well. They have a lot of give like a tennis ball which my dog loves. But they're pretty much solid rubber so they're not going to crack and break like tennis balls. But still have a lot of bounce and are relatively soft. I like the same brand for frisbees too. They're soft (but still have actual structure to them so they fly) so I don't have to worry about wear and tear on my dog's teeth. And they float so they're good for the beach/lake/river/pool. The frisbees aren't as tough as the balls and a determined dog can wreck one pretty quickly. Like within a few hours. But they hold up very well to normal frisbee use. And you're better off getting them online than at Petsmart. They're usually around $18 there and under $10 online.

Jolly Balls are fun too. The ones with the handles seem to lose the handle pretty quick. And the ones with the rope will have the rope pulled out. But the ones with the rope don't have a gaping hole in one side once the rope comes out and the ball itself doesn't fall apart unless a dog is actively trying to wreck it. I have one that I bought 6 months ago that's still in good shape.

My Lab/GSD mix used to act out similar to your dog. She'd be high energy, chew her bed while in her crate, and suffer from separation anxiety. I would try to take her on walks and jogs to burn off some of her energy, but it never seemed like it was enough (or frankly, I would get tired of running before she did). In hindsight, what I should have focused on was more quality exercise time than quantity.

Our routine now is to go to the park after work for about half an hour and have an intense session of fetch. We started off with just a ball, but she would occasionally lose interest in playing with it. So after some practice and training, we switched to this frisbee and she absolutely loves it. Because of how into fetch she is, we're also able to incorporate training into the session, with tossing the frisbee as the reward. After a good 30 minutes of sprinting around, when we come home she pretty much just goes straight to her bed and sleeps for the rest of the night.

In the end, she's happy with the level of exercise she gets and I'm happy with her being calm at home.

I also live in a townhouse too - no yard. My puppy was like this too. He still is sometimes but he's loads better. Things I've done:

I take him out often. We go on three walks a day, at least two of which involve a lot of grass. My hope was the more time he spent on grass, the less exciting it would be.

When we're on the grass I also work on attention exercises. Every time he looks at me, I give him a treat. I don't ask him to look at me, I just reward him when he chooses to. After only a week or two of this he started looking at me A LOT more.

If I see him going for a patch of grass that I know he'll rip up, I say "leave it". This kind of works because my puppy is naturally drawn to clumps anyway.

I also wanted to play fetch outside. My problem was he'd chase the ball, but then not pick it up. (Though in the house he picks it up and brings it back fine.) We use the Chuckit! Large Paraflight. They are kinda expensive, but the best ones we've found. Most of Chuckit! brand that we have tried has been great.

They are pretty stiff when you get them, but get a little softer after the dog chews them a bit. I'd say one lasts a good three or four months of regular use (carries it everywhere, loves to chase it). They will float, although she really doesn't like to swim, so hers only ever ends up in the water by accident. Definitely recommend!

My ACD goes absolutely nuts for the chuckit frisbees. She likes plastic ones but they are so sharp. Hates rubber ones because they fly too fast and she can't catch them as easily. Loves loves loves the chuckit ones, they fly well and are pretty durable.

Glad you might start disc dogging! We've been active in the sport for about a decade, and if your dog can get the hang of it, it's tons of fun.

Here's a floppy, non-scary, easy to throw and catch disc you could start with (we used this when our dogs were puppies):

You can then progress to something specifically for dogs that's competition-grade but fairly light and easy to catch, like this:

Roll it on its edge away from him so he chases it down. Roll it farther and farther so he loves to grab it from behind. Gradually work up to throwing a very low floater (you might have to crouch a bit) that he can catch without jumping, then extend the distance. Then work on making flat, longer throws that are about waist-high; practice having your dog start next to you or behind you so he has to run to catch up and catch it.

A couple of tips...High jumping can be really dangerous until the dog learns how to land on all fours, so practice throwing consistently flat and waist-high. (I swear for every hour we practice with a dog, we practice two hours alone just getting better at our disc handling!) Also, keep the discs away from him except when you play together; discs should be special and not just randomly lying around.

This is by far Louis' favorite frisbee. It's not indestructible, but it's held up very well for us. He only started getting more serious about Frisbee in the last 6 months, but I've used it for trick training so this thing has been knocked around and used frequently. It's also not too difficult to pick up from the ground.

On the other hand, I've found the Nylon frisbees to be the best for teaching the dog to catch a frisbee in the air. It took a little transition to go from nylon to the chuck it frisbee and then we'll transition to regular frisbees, but the nylon ones definitely helped build Louis' air grab confidence.

ChuckIt! Ultra Balls. I've met just one dog that preferred regular tennis balls to Ultra Balls. These Ultra Balls are ridiculously durable. They're not indestructible, but they last a long time even with heavy chewers. Also, they bounce really high and are easy to clean.

ChuckIt! Flying Squirrel. A good frisbee, a great tug toy, very durable. The feet will fall off and the frame will come out long before the fabric rips.

The Kong Black Flyer is hands down my favorite (and my dogs' favorite) frisbee. It takes a little getting used to because it's so floppy, but it flies great and it's incredibly durable. I also like Kong's Puppy Flyer as it's similar but not as bulky and cumbersome as their red one. ChuckIt makes some great frisbees too, as does West Paw

It depends on the dog- one of my corgis loves fetch and tug toys, so a soft frisbee keeps him happy. My other corgi loves to chew and gnaw, and her favorite is this rubber star ball.

They also both love antlers to chew on.

Ahh, a picky puppy! I recommend trying out these treats: fish4dogs cubes, canned hotdogs (the stinkiest kind you can find) and tuna packed in water not oil. Those fish cubes have never failed to work for me, but a good idea is to try out really abhorrently smelly foods.

You could also work on developing toy drive, although I've heard that this is sometimes difficult in sensitive herding breeds who are more likely to want to give you the toy than battle for it. Small/medium sized hooplahoops are flexible and great for puppy tug, and you can practice a) working him up with just how amazing this toy is, and b) trading one hoop for another by throwing the first one and then introducing a 'drop' cue when you throw the second one sort of like this.

I have this one that I like a lot. The only issue I have with it is that my dog likes to play tug-of-war with it and the fabric in the middle gets a bit stretched out of shape. I also have one that's a round rubber donut that has fabric stretched in the middle (attached at three points around the disc so some of the rubber is exposed. Bailey likes to play tug with that one and it holds up better. I cannot seem to find it online for the life of me.

I have found these foam frisbee's are easier on my BC's little mouth and it floats no matter what... perfect for water fetch! Plus for me, they're easier to throw. Her durafoam frisbee has teeth marks all over but it's lasted us 2 years and looks like it'll stick around much longer than that. She loves it!

I would say "catch it" and move the frisbee to my pup's face, lightly tapping her nose until she grabbed it like a tug toy. "Good catch!" Then progressed to a very short toss right at her (inches), then working up to a foot. Then short tosses away when she got the meaning of "catch it". After a week or two of this process it was throwing the frisbee like normal. I usually do a quick reminder "catch it?" and tap her nose with it (but she'll grab it). Then toss it. Shouldn't take too long if the dog is predisposed to fetch already.

I mean, having owned a border collie, I rember distinctly having to secretly trash his soft frisbee every 3 months because it was torn up from playing. He didn't destroy them purposefully, he just loved them to death.

I also remember that he could smell new ones, he found and unwrapped his year's supply every Xmas morning. I miss that dog.

I agree with everyone on the Nylabone. I made this spring pole (you can find instructions on the same site) for my pit and she loves it. Also this frisbee has survived quite a while in her grasp.

If he doesn't have a million and one dog toys yet, something like this can be great to get outside and play with the pup!

Are you using an ultimate-style frisbee? Dogs can hurt their teeth on those if they're going fast, so he may have a bit of a fear reaction. Maybe try with a soft frisbee like this one?

After that, the short distance/increasing distance thing is a good way to start. You can also throw the frisbee near someone else who picks it up if it lands on the ground, thus only rewarding if your pup catches the frisbee.

I've been using them to teach him hold/fetch, because they're about the only things he'll actually sink his teeth into and not just chomp at. He also hasn't managed to destroy them yet!

We have a 1 1/2 year old female husky. She chews soft toys up in a heartbeat, especially if they have stuffing (we will find little pieces of stuffing everywhere). The toys that she has not been able to destroy are:
-pretty much anything by KONG that is only made of the plastic/rubber

We use a Hertz tuff stuff frisbee for our 1 yr old. It flies pretty well and it lasts longer than a week. It's reasonably priced at Walmart (under $10 in Canada). We try to mix it up with hard Frisbees, the soft ones, rope toys and the ball and chuck it. I worry about his teeth too :(
