>I was going to put a couple of inches of sand, and use the paver base panels

A couple inches of sand? No, no more than an inch. I don't have any experience with paver base panels, but in laying typical pavers anything more than an inch and the sand becomes very unstable. I assume the sand functions similar with base panels - it's there to make it easy to level, and it locks things into place. What's the recommended lay

>I was going to level out the ground, but do I need to excavate a few inches? I'm planning on putting rock around it, and I was hoping not to.

You don't have to excavate so long as you're ok with having the pavers above grade, and you secure the edges. I used that edging that you used and it worked well. It went under my sand (1") and there was still enough lip to hold the pavers in. I don't know how thick the base panels are, but so long as the total depth isn't much more than an inch you should be OK. Also, make sure to get long metal nails to secure the edging, don'e use the wimpy nylon ones that come with the set. The compacted base helps secure the stakes, and you don't have that, but you should be ok if you have a hard clay ground to drive them into.

Edit: here's the edging I used. It cost a little more than the stuff at home depot but it was very sturdy.

I’m in agreement with the other comment about the path being pointless, so here is a suggestion. Change the path to a semi circle, where in the middle against the fence is a nice bench to relax and enjoy your landscape. Take out the path elsewhere, but create another path going to your raised bed in the back.

I’m not a fan of square pavers unless they are in straight arrangements. I would vote to get rid of them and do pebbles only.

Also get rid of the scalloped edging and go with just straight black. Use metal. These are nice...

I’m not sure about the vines. They don’t reall have anything to grow on to. I guess they might start growing along the fence which would look great. They need something to hold on to. You screw some eye screws in and run some wire across and then train the vines to start growing along that.

You have a great start! I’m in SoCal too and in the process of redoing the landscaping at my house. I know your pain!

Something like THIS maybe? It does seem to kind of fit the bill of what I am looking for. Not as high of a "wall" as i would like but at least it will somewhat keep the mulch in check and seems easy to install. Thanks for the suggestion!

Edit: HERE is a cheaper one that comes in a longer length. Might work even better.

As everyone said, immediate win would be zip-ties or velcro to manage the excess length, you can get a 100M spool of twist ties from a dollar store or homedepot or online. For the more permanent cables like the power cables, you can fix them to the back wall with wire channels, for the power bricks, you can free them from the powerstrip with either a power squid or a short extension cable. Lastly, for multiple cords that are going in the same direction or through the same hole on your entertainment center, consider a cable sleeve to clean up the look.

This is the type of barrier I meant. To use it as a grass barrier, I think you bury 3-4 of the 5 inches, and a lawnmower should be able to pass right over it, eliminating trimming.

I'd guess a little grass would sneak through somehow, but nothing that 10 minutes with a hoe 3x a summer won't solve.

> I plan on giving a 6"-1' buffer that I can trim back any creeping grass

Yes, this is a good idea. New gardeners like to cram seedling veggies right to the edge of the growing space, but everything works so much better with a buffer. (This means, if you are growing tomatoes that need a 36"-wide row, plus a 24" buffer, the tomato seedlings get planted 42" from the grass.)

Coyote. This one: https://www.amazon.com/Coyote-Landscape-Products-Edging-18-Gauge/dp/B0158F06FU
It seemed to work really well. Easy to install and I think it looks great.

u/Mullberries · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I just keep my cables out of sight for my rabbits. I use garden border along my baseboards to tuck wires behind. The buns haven't bothered the border or the wires since I did it.

I used a super powerful double sided tape to stick it to my baseboards too.

I did a patio with those same pavers a few years back. I used an edging like Dimex EasyFlex Commercial Grade Aluminum Landscape Paver Edging Kit, 48-Feet (1856-48C) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PG44OFC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EQAwDbWP7A7ED to solidify our edges. It held up really well, though it looks like you already have the edge stones down, so it may take a little extra work

u/MrDorkESQ · 3 pointsr/whatisthisthing

It isn't a rail spike that would be used for a railroad. It is a landscape spike. They are used to secure landscape timbers and edging. It might have gotten bent when landscaping was being done and accidentally left there.

I've also seen them used for surveying, marking fence or wall layouts etc.

u/PM_ME_HUGE · 1 pointr/landscaping

I would put down actual edging. Then yes, a weed wacker.

For reference: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Mark-Plastics-95440-Landscape/dp/B006H39W30/ref=lp_3480672011_1_6?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1494114652&sr=1-6

Edging prevents the grass from creeping into the bed and ends the constant battle you will fight trying to keep an edge without it.

UGH. Cray cray indeed.
Not sure if you can tell from my photo but the property line is the edge of her driveway. The driveway and fence line up. The whole street is like that. Ever since craycray lady moved in she's been mowing on my side of the driveway. She's a loud person and likes to pace in the driveway talking LOUDLY on her phone to who knows who. One day while folding laundry I hear her talking about the water from my downspouts getting on HER driveway. She was mad about it. Water. During a rain storm. Getting on her driveway.
Never mind that her downspout empties on her driveway exactly opposite my downspout. You can see it in the pic. It was just pissing her off that MY water was getting on HER driveway.
Hey lady, don't get mad at me, get mad at gravity. It's not my fault you bought a house downhill from mine.

When she first moved in I had it all worked out with the previous neighbor to direct my rain runoff down the driveway via a drain pipe extension to prevent erosion. She wouldn't leave the pipe in place. kept hiding it in the bushes like I wouldn't notice. So, I removed the pipe and the water started washing sediment onto her driveway.
She threw a fit and installed the little white picket 4" tall fence you see. Her stated goal (It isn't hard to eavesdrop because she's so loud and chooses to all of her bitching right next to my house. Queen passive aggressive) was to keep the water from my down spout off her driveway.
I work in water engineering. I almost shit myself at how stupid the idea even was that a 4" tall picket anything would hold back ANY amount of water. I mean, it has spaces between the pickets not to mention the water running under the thing because it's just stuck into the grass. This is the stuff https://www.amazon.com/Emsco-Group-Dackers-Adirondack-Flexible/dp/B0026SUILA/ref=sr_1_27?keywords=white+garden+edging&qid=1555684465&s=lawn-garden&sr=1-27
That was the day I knew how deep her brand of craycray was.

I was prepared to go offer to help her achieve her goal of directing my rain runoff down to the street keeping it off her driveway. Like I say I work in water engineering. there's LOTS of things we could do. Hell if she was willing to pony up the money we could trench in a drain pipe to the curb. I mean if the water is bothering her that bad surely we could do something to help soothe her fevered mind.
Unfortunately with that level of crazy I don't think that anything I can ever do would satisfy her. Better to let her THINK she is winning if that eases her pain.

Let's not even start talking about her obsessive leaf blowering in the fall, bitching the whole time about other peoples leaves getting on HER driveway. "I don't even have ONE single tree and look at all these leaves" she ranted to no one.
SMH crazy be crazy indeed
